Flames 4, Islanders 2: Power Play Continues to Struggle in Loss to Calgary

Christian Arnold, Islanders Point Blank:

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The Islanders had every chance to win Tuesday night, but in the end it was the lowly Calgary Flames that came away with the 4-2 win at Nassau Coliseum.

Matt Stajan scored with 5:32 remaining in the game to put the Flames ahead 3-2, but it came down to the Islanders just not capitalizing on scoring chances. The Isles power play went 0-4 on the night and  has been shutout the last 28 times they’ve had the man advantage.

“We find ways to lose games more than we find ways to win them,” said Islander Captain John Tavares. “And it’s one we let slip away.”

Calgary started off the game slow and disinterested for a large chunk of the first and second periods. The Islanders outshot the Flames 22-11 through the first two periods, but it was the Flames that struck first late in the second period.

Sean Monahan was the recipient of a lucky bounce. The puck bounced off the back of one of his teammates and landed right in front him. Monahan quickly shot it off the crossbar and into the net at 14:15.

Denis Wideman made it 2-0 at 18:08 of the second, but the Islanders found an answer with 6.1 seconds left in the period. Thomas Hickey scored a rebound goal to pull the Islanders within one.

Calvin de Haan scored 7:31 into the third period to tie the game, but the tie would only last a few moments. David Jones scored the game winner for Calgary, although it could be argued that it was goaltender interference since it looked as though Evgeni Nabokov was being run into by a Flames player.

“At first I thought it was a high stick,” Hickey explained when asked about his thoughts on the go ahead goal. “On the replay I guess it wasn’t a high stick. Nabby felt he got pushed. [The officials] said our D pushed him in. I’d have to look at it again, but we felt like their guy was moving in and pushing Nabby into the net.”

The Flames added and empty netter with three seconds left to seal the win.

“It’s really frustrating,” Hickey later said about the loss. “Especially as the game went on I thought there were parts of our game that got better. Our power play got better after a rough start, but it’s frustrating because you need those points.”

The lack of power play production played a big role in Thursday’s loss. The Islanders have not had a goal on the man advantage since January against the New York Rangers.

Despite the lack of success on the power play, Tavares said he didn’t believe it wasn’t functioning.

“I think we’re getting chances and we’re just not putting them in,” he said. “We’re shooting the puck and sometimes it doesn’t go in. Sometimes it does. Obviously it can be a little sharper. Always can be better, but to say it’s not producing anything is wrong. But clearly it’s costing us some hockey games.”

Bailey on the PP and Nelson on the 3rd line?  Seriously WTF!?

the short version of this game is: play decent defense, beat islanders.  as if we didn't know.  it's lucky not every team has the game plan calgary had last night.

Another 1 goal loss (essentially).  So many games that could have been won this year, have been lost.  There is talent out there. It is just being mismanaged. The PP and PK have killed us all season. Soft goals by both of our goalies have cost us games.  A thin defense core has left us vulnerable to injury.  One night they score 4 goals and lose.  The next night they give up only 2 and lose.  It is not just 1 thing we can pinpoint, but all of the above at various times.

A new coach - one that is not currently on the bench - along with a consistant, NHL goalie would make a world of difference next season.  Trade the guys now who don't figure into the future for what you can get.  No need to blow the team up.  Maybe get a decent NHL ready prospect in a trade for Vanek / MacDonald.  Those moves need to be made in the off season to begin next year with a fresh attitude.

If the draft pick is low enough this season, I would keep it and give the 2015 pick to Buffalo figuring us to be better next season.

It's time to pick up the pieces and move on....

Per Darren Dregger on TSN.CA,:  Pen's Defenseman Chris Letang suffered a stroke last week and is out six weeks. Not career ending, but must me treated with blood thinners.

Off topic, but you hate to see serious health issues with any player.

Trade bailey, lubo, amac, strait, and vanek, make room on defense for pulock pedan and maybe reinhart, bring in a vet defenseman and a good goalie, and possibly go after matt greene, or colioacovo, cammaleri, setaguchi, or jussi jokinen in the offseason, if the isles want to win and care abt winning this is what I'd do if I was the owner by bringing in these players and get rid of the ones who don't perform, and get rid of the coach!

Peter laviolette

Nelson jt okposo

Cammaleri strome jokinen

Grabner Nielsen clutterbuck

Martin cizikas McDonald

De haan Greene

Hickey hamonic

Pulock pedan or reinhart

A good goalie (hopefully Martin jones or Brian Elliot)

Nabby backing up for one more yr

This equals success to selling out every night and making the playoffs consistently, plus adding depth in scoring and defense, someone send this to snow bc he needs all the help he can get!!!!

Breaking News! Garth Snow fired as GM of the NY Islanders and replaced by Evgeni Nabokov. Owner Charles Wang in a statement said hopefully replacing the backup goalie with a starting goalie will improve the fortunes of the team! In his first move as GM Nabokov traded star centerman John Tavares to the Minnesota Wild for Dany Heatly and a third round pick in this years draft and named Josh Bailey as the new captain replacing the departed Tavares.

Nino Is a plus 11 that would make him the most reliable defensive forward on this team. There are only three  plus  players Vanek  7 Hickey  6 Bolton 1  on the Isle Team. Blake Comeau I mean Bailey LoL who is being payed  big bucks to produce is 5-15=20 -8 and He in his 5th year . Ninos  I consider first year he will score close to 20 goals and 50 somewhat points,5th leading goal scorer. If you say well the reason his plus minus is so good he is on a good Team, well lets look at some of the Wild Players . Pominville - 4,Koviu- 4 Granland-2 Coyle-6 .So as you can see, when Nino is on the ice he plays pretty well. All of these mentioned are making a hell a lot more then Nino .J.T K.O are minus also. So anybody that says from a who would could help more on the ice perspective that this was not a horrible trade, must be related to Mike Milbury. At a plus 11 He  would lead this team asTheir most responsible winger.Thats the Facts, numbers do not lie!

For a team to get scored on in the last few minutes to tie the game or lose the game is on the coach. If he can't put out the right players or motivate the ones that are out there,he needs to be gone..I love the islanders but it's embarrassing !!!

Please wake me up when Snow get's fired... In any other market... The GM would be toast after such a poor off season of talent procurement and 7 out of 8 years of inability to be a playoff team.

Not asking for much as a fan... I just want my team be Professional and stop accepting losing... How do you change the loosing culture you ask??? It starts from the TOP!!!!

This season has been an embarrassment. An organization where there is no accountability from top to bottom.

Your big off season of acquiring Regin and Bouchard and then they are moved for a 4th round pick. Minor league all the way. Seats on the glass on stub hub for $25 bucks. You can't get Hershey Bears tickets for that. What an awful leadership team, satisfied to always battle for the 8th seed. Haven't been to a game since October, not worth the time and effort. I've been a fan since '72 and IMO this franchise has never been run so poorly and on the cheap. Why did Snow offer A-Mac a contract? Either you want him or you don't. If you want, you have to pay fair market value. What message does that send? Incompetence. That should be our brand. This isn't the Islanders. This is the NY Incompetence led by Wang, Snow and an AHL coach.

Why was Bailey on ice last minute of a must win? That about sums it

Cappy should have been updating his resume in November. We're an inside joke

The players are pros who get paid very nicely. As much as I want to believe that being a pro athlete who should ignore distractions and concentrate on the game , the whole" will he sign or not deal" which ended up in a NO  sucked the little life this team had completely out.

This team is an enigma. Good game in Washington- shutting down Ovie- and then yesterday....this team needs a psychologist/psychiatrist  on staff the same as they have trainers and equipment manager. If this does not work get a voodoo priest .

He should treat Wang first.

Ground Hog Day or Wang Hog Day. We can substitute Day with Year. The beginning of everyYear we wake up to the same song and dance playing. And the rest of year turns out to be the same result over and over, again and again. I wont blame the players because they all are what they are and are working their asses off despite what it might look like.  Do you think Wang and Snow ever feel any embarrassment or shame when they are around the other Owners and GM`s ?

Last hope for this season was getting Lubo back to jump start the PP. Well now that ship has sailed along with Poulin may be a #1, Regin and Bouchard will contribute, Bailey will have a solid year, Vanek will sign, etc.

Kills me watching the PP with all the slow motion passes and holding the puck forever. No where near enough movement to get anyone out of position. Do they even work on the PP in practice? Maybe they do and think its really good because they score on our penalty killers in practice. Oh wait....

HOW IN THE WORLD DIDN'T CAPTN JACK NOT CALL A TIMEOUT WITH 36 SECONDS LEFT???? I was at the game and was pissed, no game plan, he lose all interest  and decided let's just go all out! Can we trade Jack for a bucket of pucks?

Can't change the past, was it a bad trade of course aren't they all, apparently we all have to b patient and wait for wang to sell the team to someone who cares bc we all know NOTHING will get better while he's our owner

@orange2327 - Doug is reTOOLing the PP for a big season ending run. Bailey should be waking up in late March for his usual season ending 3 goal contribution. Then, we should see Beetle on the first line next year. LOL, yikes!

@orange2327

Well he is still here, now I hope he gets hurt and the idiotic Isles have to pay big bucks to an injured player, they deserve it.

@orange2327- Vic, Snow has backed himself into a huge hole on the Vanek move. All GM's now this and unless they can really fleece him, we will see TV head into Soschi as an Islander.

Time for Wang to stretch out Snow for some high ankle grabbing if they do reach a deal..

kicksave

@Billy T Moore  don't let the front office trick you into placing the blame on the players. this all squarely falls on the shoulders of the general manager. not the players. not even the owner. eight years in and there is no system in place anywhere: player development, drafting, scouting, coaching. again, snow does get to spend money; he has to at least reach a cap floor and he has been drafting supposed upper-tier talent in the top five for almost eight years now. i chuckle when realizing the one bright spot to this season--calvin dehaan--almost never came to pass because the front office didn't think he was ready. fans only lucked into seeing him materialize due to desperation tied to injuries.

@TomDinNJ

Right, anyone still defending Snow is an AHOLE as of this moment, unless he pulls off a blockbuster deal which I have absolutely no confidence in his ability to do so.

@TomDinNJ Snow & Caps has there chance , they blew it , time to hire real experienced hockey people. How many times can opposing players interfere with our goalie without getting dropped on their head ? JT needs to sit down with Chuckles and lay it out for him , bring in a real GM who can take us to the next level or trade me.

@Jeff Roland @orange2327 He probably won't be dealt today for those reasons.  If he comes back from the Olympics in 1 piece though, the price goes up a bit because those concerns are behind everyone.  Teams will be more inclined to put out reasonable bids for him.

@kicksave @Billy T Moore“It’s tough to get pucks through when guys are standing right in your face the whole time,” said Calvin de Haan, who played 2:34 of his 21:24 on the man-advantage. “I could score 50 goals from the stands.”...lol him and Hickey said the samething, shutup fans...this is haaaaaaard work

@since72 @Jeff Roland@orange2327I would not worry too much about Vanek getting hurt.

First :Austria is not getting far into the competition, way less games than Tavares  as an example. Second : he floats around ,rarely makes contact with anybody  third: Olympic hockey is not as grueling and demanding as the NHL, no real heavy contact at least not until  the semi finals and finals will be.
