Game Day (59): Flames at Islanders, 7pm

Nassau Coliseum — Uniondale, NY
TV: MSG+ Radio: 88.7, 103.9 FM

The Least You Should Know About the Flames… The Flames have almost an identical record as the Islanders and have also struggled this season… However, the Western Conference was hot to start the year and Calgary was out of playoff contention a bit earlier although both conference’s eighth seeds are now in a similar spot… Calgary also has a similar goaltending combo as the Isles, as Karri Ramo  (.908) and Reto Berra (.894) have below average and well below average numbers…

Kevin Schultz

Tonight the Islanders return home for the first of two games prior to the Olympics break. They’ll host the Calgary Flames tonight in the first of two matchups this year, with the other coming in a few weeks on March 7. On Saturday night Colorado comes to town and then we’ll all focus on the dogs and missing doorknobs… I mean SPORTS … in Sochi.

The worse of the Flames top two goalies will start tonight, as Reto Berra draws the Islanders. Berra is owner to a sub-900 save percentage this season and three-plus GA in four his last seven. Defender Curtis Glencross is the only notable injury for Calgary. The Flames are 5-1 in their last six games.

The Islanders will start Evgeni Nabokov in net tonight. The rest of the lineup in unconfirmed but you’d have to guess that it doesn’t change much after a win, as Capuano doesn’t usually change it after a win.

Projected Lineup:
Vanek-Tavares-Okposo de Hann-Donovan Nabokov
Grabner-Nielsen-Clutterbuck MacDonald-Strait Poulin
Bailey-Nelson-McDonald Hickey-Visnovsky
Martin-Cizikas-Boulton
Scratches: Regin, Martinek, Carkner IR: Hamonic

Going to walk the dogs, talk to myself for a while, then come in and face the usual barrage of questions from the old lady starting with " why do you continue to put US thru this", waving the remote control in several pieces that I left behind on the couch...

I heard Lubomir Visnovsky is changing his name to Claude Rains. For all you young guys he's the actor that played the invisible man. This guy just looks like he's going through the motions.

Does the Olympic freeze include coaches and GM's or can they be fired?

They must trade Vanek and Amac ASAP they are the cancer of this team. How can they have these guys still be playing here when they don't want to sign.

This was an ugly display of hockey can't even make a simple play of gettig the puck over the blue line.I don't know how you guys in Long Island can take much more of this i'm here in Montral a huge long time Islander fan just want to come there and choke these idiots running this team.

They should put the 1975 Isles out there the next game we probably would get a better effort.

The safest position on the ice is the opposing goalie, the islanders never hit the net ,Man I kid you not I have never seen a Team shank so many shots!I hope these guys do not play golf in there spare time, they would be yelling four!all day.

The last 72 hours have been a total mess. VANEK says no and we lose our top line. Then Amac gets a chance at a 3.5 million dollar raise which is nutz. And he says no. What!!!! Now we lose in front of a very small crowd. Our season just went down the tank. I really felt they were on a road to recovery. Now this. I'm speechless. The Trades that must happen are VANEK Amac and get Nabby to a team that can win. Maybe Chicago. And then get the top pick. EKBLAD!!!! I'm freakin sick right now. I bleed this team since 1978. And I'll tell ya this one stings a lot. Too much to mention.

@ny711ot that's like a 5th round pick considering where the Hawks will finish in the standings.

@truth77    Actually 4 more years 2017-18 is when his contract ends.

@ejej

Gonna be a late night for Chuck's puppy RM... He'll resort to the usual: lies, damned lies, and CORSI.

Goebbles had it easier defending the Reich.

@dimaio34  Actually he turned down a contract offer of 4 years 16 million. He wants 5 years 25 million.

It went in the tank when they went like 5 weeks without a win

The new thread is great! People are patting Garth on the back for a nice trade, forgetting he signed these two rotting stiffs. This is the reverse of niño. That trade was good too because he wasn't really a 5th overall talent I guess forgetting who took him 5th.

What the hell does this guy got to do to be called. Out fully? He is inept.

shlo
shlo

@dkdk He was a restricted free agent and a true team guy. A real trooper. He will cash in when he reaches FA.

@dkdk Bad luck, injuries, bad goal tending which was not the fault of the GM

dkdk
dkdk

It is to the point snow could spit in their face and they would thank him for not pissing on them.

@tag1 @shlo@dkdk

Well the people who turned down his quest for the lighthose project said no, and see what happened, he pouted and picked up his ball and went home.

tag1

Not for long he dropped out pretty early

dkdk
dkdk

He got it the old fashion way by stealing it and then pinning it on subordinates

shlo
shlo

@tag1 Rechler was his partner there. He could have pulled it through.

shlo
shlo

@dkdk He still is a business man. He did not get all his money by being stupid. That does not mean that he can own a successful sport team. I hope he learned something . Even a monkey learns at some point that doing the same thing over and over and getting the same idiotic result cannot continue.

tag1
tag1

@shlo @tag1 Derailed him from what a 4 billion dollar project he couldn't afford to build?

tag1
tag1

@dkdk You still have people on here thinking things will change in bklyn the only thing that will change is the sight lines.

shlo
shlo

@tag1  Well , money talks. If they are paying him 30 mil a year they have leverage. They already took away some of the operational aspects from him. Kate Murray , a nobody in my book along with some other morons derailed him. So like you I can't wait to see what will happen.

dkdk
dkdk

I hear that tag .... Until he goes this is it. We know he didn't listen to Neil Smith, Nolan, or Lavy either.

tag1
tag1

@shlo @dkdk nobody tells the great wang what to do not the government, not arena owners no one, can't wait to see wang and the Barclay's people operate together

shlo
shlo

@dkdk Right. I am calling for the entire coaching staff to begin with. I have a feeling that when they move to Brooklyn, the powers there will force Wang's hand because they are taking charge of some of the operations end. They are paying Wang 30 mil or so (if the info I have is correct) and they will have a say in everything.

dkdk
dkdk

But they changed the whole front office too.

I am all for changing the coach, but if the GM stays it means nothing. Oh other than Doug weight in e big chair.

shlo
shlo

@dkdk Yes, it comes back to my point . Avalanche changed the coach and they took off. Different attitude .

Look at the Jets, same thing. Personnel did not change just the coach.

dkdk
dkdk

@shlo .... And I look at it the other way, snow built slop that no coach will win with (even though Cappy isn't an nhl coach).

I believe the avalanche have a payroll close to us and a rebuilding team. Which rebuild do you want? I will take that whole front office and coaching staff of ours any day of the week.

shlo
shlo

@dkdk I defended Snow because he is operating with a small budget and there is that much you can do.

Drafting is  tough when you have 2 or 3 scouts to advise you  and it's a crap shoot for most parts.

I am pissed that he did nothing with the coaches.

dkdk
dkdk

@shlo ... People forget (or more likely ignore) a GM is responsible for coaching staffs, scouting dept, trades, contracts, free agents, and drafting. So far snow is a failure at each with maybe some wiggle room around the draft

shlo
shlo

but a  useless coaching staff is the GM's fault

dkdk
dkdk

Well Bo Horvat is the reason for that ..... Lol
