Senators 4, Islanders 1: Isles Drop Final Home Game of Season

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The Islanders ended their home schedule on a sour note Tuesday night.

The Ottawa Senators scored three goals in the third period to defeat the Isles 4-1 in front of a crowd of 12,922 at Nassau Coliseum. Jason Spezza scored back-to-back goals and Alex Hemsky scored the game winner for the Senators. Matt Kassian’s empty net goal sealed the victory for Ottawa.

“I thought our kids battled,” Islander Coach Jack Capuano said. “The most skilled team won the game tonight. There’s no question. A highly skilled team that caught our D flat footed on a couple goals there. Spezza is a world class player obviously and Hempsky. We had our chances, but I thought we were pretty structured. I thought our kids worked hard.”

The game was a scoreless draw for the first 32:45 of the game before Spezza scored his first goal of the contest. His shot from the top of the left circle made it past Anders Nilsson and into the net to put Ottawa up 1-0. The Islanders responded in the opening minute of the third period. Frans Nielsen put home a rebound shot to even the game at one 22 seconds into the period.

Nilsson played well after the tying goal and kept the Senators at bay, but at 12:45 Spezza struck again. A quick wrist shot from the Ottawa captain made it under the crossbar to put his team up 2-1. Hempsky scored roughly two minutes later on an impressive play that saw him wiz past the Islanders defense and beat Nilsson.

An empty net goal in the final minute sealed the 4-1 victory.

The loss was the 19th time the Islanders lost at home this season and marks the fourth straight year they have finished below .500 at Nassau Coliseum. It’s not something that the players in the locker room are happy about, and they want the fans to know that.

“We’ve got some of the best fans in the league,” Travis Hamonic said. “We want to be able to win here first of all for each other. For the organization, for the fans, for Long Island. We want to win here. It’s a fun place to win games and the crowd gets behind you. We’ve got loyal fans and it would be nice to have some better efforts here at home.”

The Islanders realized that this season has not turned out the way they or the fanbase had hoped it would.

“Last year we took a step in the right direction, but this year we went back the other way,” Matt Martin said. “We have to get back on track, but [the fans] stuck with us this year. My first few years here there wouldn’t be people in the stands tonight and there have been a lot of people in the seats this whole season. We’re grateful for that.”

The Islanders have three games remaining in the 2013-14 season. On Thursday they take on the Montreal Candians, followed by a trip to Newark on Friday and wrapping it all up on Sunday in Buffalo against the Sabres.

Good Luck with this defense...and to the kool aiders..what has Lee and Nelson done in the last few weeks...nothing...they are good players with potential thats it...they are not superstars that the kool aiders believe they are...nonetheless we all know that Garth's reason for not spending money this summer will be the "emergence" of Lee and Nelson...and the expected rebound of Bailey

Nilsson is the worst goalie that I can think of in recent memory - maybe ever for this team. I just cannot fathom how he can continue to drop to his knees and let pucks go over his shoulder time and again. Pucks go through him, he can't find the puck, can't control rebounds and there has been zero growth in his game - absolutely none. Nelson has gotten better, deHaan and Donovan too but this Nilsson is the weakest prospect they have - and naturally at the most important position and greatest need the team has. Naturally. I've seen enough of him at the NHL level - although I'd continue to play him to solidify our #4 draft position - but next year either cut him or let him play in Europe and "grow" (if he can) at someone else's expense.

The coach was right about one thing, the kids tried hard - but for Nilsson to let up two softies time and again is demoralizing.

I wonder if Matt Martin realizes tickets have been going for 3 dollars the past month?

There are a lot of reasons why the Islanders are so bad. 1. Very rarely if it is the truth no free agent wants to come here even if they are getting more money from us.2.Garth Snow and his picking of draft picks (90%) does not work. Bad scouting. 3. The politicians, high taxes for home owners that no one wanted to move a get a new arena so it had to go to Brooklyn.Hopefully one day if in Brooklyn the Isles can be the proud franchise it once was. Let us hope after this season things will change. Start new and hopefully the last year Isles play in Nassau County is remembered as a great seaon and not a bad one.

Who is Hempsky?  I saw a guy wearing #83 named Hemsky, but no Hempsky

Could you spin a little less?  Its not their 19th loss at home.  Its their 27th time losing at home, 28 if you count the stadium game.  13 home home wins is tied for the least in the league.  Pretty abysmal.

Once upon a time, we had Don Maloney at the helm of this organization.  We thought things couldn't get any worse until in stepped Mike Milbury.  Again, we thought we hit rockbottom until in comes Garth Snow.  I'm afraid to see who's next.

Watching these last few games and I think this teams needs so much more than goaltending to be good next year.

I know Tavares/Okposo are out, but boy does this team have trouble generating quality scoring chances.  Secondary  scoring could be an issue again next year unless two of the young guys take big steps next year.  I just don't see it right now with those three.

We know D and Goaltending are weaknesses right now, but I Just don't see offense as a big strength for next year either.

This team still needs so much work 8 years into a rebuild, amazing....

How damn lame can you be, koolaiders.  Has a single independent thought ever come to your mind???  Bailey is soft and useless.  Wang will not spend enough, Garth sucks as a GM.  WE ALL KNOW THIS!!!

Time for something original.

No one believes Nelson or Lee are going to be superstars!

It seems that the only original thoughts you can come bye are pure bull.

@bubbamac19 The glove save he made on Turris was highlight reel quality. But, generally speaking he's too big and too awkward to play goalie, especially if he's constantly on his knees. Unless you're Dominik Hasek, you have zero mobility if you're off your skates. I wish we had a real goalie coach instead of Dunham to work with these kids to see if there's any real talent there.

8 years? According to my arithmetic, it's 21 years.

Don22

@justintime I don't disagree with you at all.  But the injuries to JT and OK really do hurt. Even to Grabner too.  It makes it so much easier for teams to match up.  When Franz is your only true "scoring threat" it's easy to shut them down.

With that said, yes - they need secondary scoring too.  But if it's possible to bring in a seasoned veteran leader that can still contribute a bit on offense, I think that would help the secondary scoring.  Just not sure who that is and if Garth can actually pull it off.

And of course the D & G needs are priority.

since72
since72

The injuries are certainly part of it, but they lost Moulson and then Vanek as well. You can't just watch those 30 goals go away and not replace it without a major loss of production. Frans pulls his weight but Bailey is a bust and Grabbner can't convert on his numerous breakaways. Difficult as it is to swallow, the next season may well rest on how much Nelson, Strome, Lee and Reinhart can produce. Sure, they need an NHL goalie along with Nabby. But as you say, the team needs a lot more than a goalie. They need a top 6 wing and a vet D. We may need to move the top pick along with a good prospect to get this done via trade because we are shut out of the FA market.

As it currently stands, I am not optimistic for next season. You're right justintime, after 8 years it is amazing. And no one gets fired!

Milbury was 4 for 13 in terms of playoffs snow is one for his last 7. Milbury was pretty terrible but for people to think snow is somehow clearly better ......

mrcisback
mrcisback

@slapshot18_rs @snowmustgo  I'm very disappointed in Snow but if that guy thinks Snow is a worse GM the Mike Milbury then he's clueless. Some people don't seem to realize that not only was Mike Milbury the worst GM in hockey but he's probably the worst GM in sports period. With his insane moves he single handedly dissembled what would have been a stanley cup team and contender for probably 10 years.

@tag1 @syosset1  dont be ridiculous, no one wants this team to lose or finds it fun to lose.  the fact is, everyone has realized this is a lost season, but everyone still loves hockey. no one is going to change the team they root for becuase everyone on here loves the islanders.  there are people that choose to be more optimistic and look for the positives in these meaningless games, and others choose to bash management, players, and the team as a whole.  these same people also choose to bash any person that finds a single positive thing found in these games.

doesnt make us any less of fans, doesnt make us supporters of wang/snow.  everyone hates what has happened to this team - regardless of what you guys interpret the comments to be.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@camb33 @slapshot18_rs  no i dont like reading the same comments 40x a day, every day

and i also dont like how you completely misinterpret what people say.

for example... "well enough with your crap of believing that snow and wang have a clue..."

meanwhile don, and everyone else has stated several times we dont liek snow/wang and want them gone just as much as everyone else.

THATS what we are tired of dealing with.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@dkdk  when you consider moulson/vanek were UFA's it makes it less bad.  was it bad? of course it was. god awful really.  but we didnt lose long term assets like milbury made us do.  but yes, bad turnout in that trade, that is something we can all agree on

dkdk
dkdk

Both are god awful, agreed.

6 bottom five finishes in 7 years and trading what amounted to Moulson a 1 and 2 for Colberg is as bad as trade in any sport that I can remember

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@justintime  milbury wasnt micro managed...he had the ability to actually make trades...and he didnt yet destroy the reputation of the isladners so players actually would sign here.

milbury isnt bad becuase he didnt try to improve the team...hes so bad because he DESTROYED the franchise in an attempt to make the team better.

thats why hes so bad...all those trades he made were actually an attempt to make the team better.

mind = blown

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@dkdk

milbury...

1. traded jp dumont and a pick for dmitri nabokov who played maybe a season total in his nhl career?

2. drafted dipietro #1 overall in a draft that also had dany heatley and marian gaborik, meanwhile we already had roberto luongo, another highly regarded goalie

3. traded bryan mccabe, todd bertuzzi and pick for trevor linden

4. traded chara, muckalt and a pick (which turned into jason spezza) for alexei yashin.

5. traded olli jokinen and luongo for mark parrish and oleg kvasha

he also obnoxiously signed yashin to a 90 million dollar contract which he never even came close to living up to, and we are still paying for today.

id be shocked if anyone could come up with 5-6 things that snow has done that equates to these.

point is both are god awful GMs and we are cursed that weve had this terrible reign of GMs.

justintime
justintime

Nobody is as bad as Milbury, but Snow is getting closer every day to Milbury.

Another year or two and I could see them being talked about in the same vain.

The results speak for themselves, 6 out of 7 years in bottom five is as bad as it can get.   I can't think of an GM in histoy that accomplished that feat, no not even Milbury.

dkdk
dkdk

The reason why everyone hates Milbury is because he traded away tons of talent, talent in which he drafted. Until proven otherwise, snow has drafted JT.

And likewise, as usual, I am thrilled to be on the opposite side of you.

justintime

@slapshot18_rs @mrcisback What  assets was Milbury provided that Snow wasn't, just curious?

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@mrcisback exactly.  the decisions milbury made as GM will literally make you cringe at the thought of what could have been.   its a very frustrating thought.  as much as snow isn't getting the job done, he also doesnt have the assets milbury was provided.

regardless, we need a managerial change desperately - i just dont think you could ever compare anyone to milbury.

tag1
tag1

@slapshot18_rs I understand what you are saying but if the GM doesn't or isn't capable of acting on all these "ifs" (if he gets a goalie, if the "D" improves, etc...) then we continue to go nowhere, and the goal tending has been shaky for years under snow, this is nothing new.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@tag1  i agree completely - fact is, this team wasn't built to win this year with or without everyone healthy, including JT.  HOPEFULLY snow realizes that and does his best to solidify the blue line the crease.  im not exactly expecting it, but im hoping for it because with even an average defense and goalie this team wins 10 more games and is at least sniffing the playoffs.  how many leads did we blow in the third period this year?...

tag1
tag1

@slapshot18_rs The coach made his ridiculous comments last night thats what we were originally responding to, Jagr made a comment a couple weeks ago saying that they get payed to play hard don't make a big deal about that, that they are supposed to win, I guess that mentality doesn't prevail here. I'm not going to even bother to respond to the guy whose using injuries as an excuse, that is beyond pathetic when you take into account that the Isles were fairly healthy when they had their long losing streak, JT and KO got injured when the Isles were already out of it for all intense and purposes and most of all teams like the Pens and Wings have gotten destroyed with injuries compared to the Isles and you don't see them making any excuses.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@tag1  and we do, just in more constructive ways without repeating ourselves all over every blog posted, 20x per blog, all day every day.

@slapshot18_rs   When someone posts after loss after loss "fun game to watch" they need to get a clue. If you hate what's been going on for YEARS then you too should be bashing ownership and management because they are responsible for this mess.

Quality #1 goalies don't appear out of thin air, it's the GM's job to get one, and when was the last time we had a quality #1 that we could depend on for more than a stretch of games, and don't tell me Nabby. Epic fail by snow and it shows by our record under him for the past 8 years.
