Afternoon Skate: Rangers Ahead, Trying to Diagnose the Issues

Kevin Schultz

It’s been an awfully quiet 48 hours since Tuesday night’s loss to Tampa Bay. No changes, no news. Sort of a calm before the storm of Rangers and Islanders doing battle tomorrow night. It’ll be the first of four meetings between the teams over the next five weeks. They’ll play Friday then three times in January, one of which is of course the out door game.

Here are your afternoon links and stories:

  • At Lighthouse Hockey, Garik takes a look at the Islanders’ neutral zone play both defensive and offensively. Here’s a partial spoiler; Brock Nelson and Travis Hamonic are doing quite well. Despite his goal-scoring prowess, Eric Boulton is not doing so well by these metrics.
  • How bad are the Islanders at coughing up leads in the third period? This bad. SBNation’s Adam Gretz takes a look at just how epically bad the Islanders have been at holding leads. The league average win percentage with a lead heading into the final period is .835. The Islanders, this year, are at .444. Oof.
  • Newsday asks the Islanders about the five-car pile up in front of the net the other night. “I can’t really explain it,” Capuano said, “and I don’t think any of them could either. We didn’t take the right course of action there. It’s not something we teach.”
  • CBS thinks Ray Emery would have helped the Islanders because… Well, he would have beaten the snot out of an opponent’s goalie, at least. I opined about Ben Bishop yeseterday, so maybe I am not one to judge. The article also makes the argument for Mark Streit. In hindsight, Mark Striet would certainly have helped the Islanders deficient defense, especially in Lubomir Visnovsky’s absence. That’s certainly true. Other side of the coin is that we’d all still probably be complaining about his defense, which was the case for the past season or two.
  • An interesting argument that goalies don’t improve (they just get worse as time goes on). “If you take the last 30 years or so of NHL save-percentage data, and just figure out everybody’s save percentage by age, you’ll be surprised by the early peak. Collectively, goalies seem to max out between the ages of 21 and 23 and then drop off more or less monotonically.”
  • Chris Botta says there’s still time for the Isles because the East is a mess.

And finally, MSG had a nicely put together advertisement for Friday night’s game.

-----Our owner is controling this team in his own delusional/stupid way.

------Our GM is one of the worst negotiaters I have ever witnessed. Just found out that we were right there with acquiring         Schneider, but lost for a lesser package to the Devs! (as per XM radio).

------Our coaching staff is by far the most incompetent in the league. ALL the players are under performing, and no one on this staff has a clue as to how to motivate/change loser mentality/guide/teach, or anything else. All they do is rotate 3rd and 4th line players, and sit our young promising ones. I fully believe anyone on this blogg can do a better job. We have virtually the same experience, but MUCH more passion!

------So, since it's Christmas, and we know that WANG will not give up his favorite toy to dismantle and try to put back together, and we also know that Garth will be GM even if he trades Tavares, ....the only semi-hope is that we get a totally new coaching staff that can offer these players a new perspective. Oh, and a decent player development dept. would be a nice necessity too!

After all, it can't be EVERY SINGLE PLAYER that's bad, it is 0 guidance and accountability!  I guarantee if we start trading our assets, they will become stars on another team, yet when we get another team's stars, they flounder under this regime!

TRANSLATION: piss poor coaching and developing! I swear, if they drafted GRETSKY, he would have been average playing on the 4th line with a defensively "responsible Jon Simm!

@nightbite  Totally agree ! I just wish they would play hard for 60 minutes.Imagine what  the Stanley Cup Teams must be thinking about this horror show of an Organization.

The Isles are now tied with Buffalo for the fewest non shootout wins at 5, 5 wins in 35 games says it all.

So tired of this bs. Has anyone heard a peep from the two geniuses running this show??? It's just one disappointment after the next with no change in sight. Philly is freakin 11 points ahead of us and I can't even get excited for a game against the rags. This team is so irrelevant that we're among the few omitted from an nhl.com Xmas tv promo. They don't even want to hang a once proud dynasty's ornament on the F'in tree!!!

I hope Rudolph sh#ts down your chimney Wang. Maybe Garth's leg will get stuck on the sled and dragged throughout the night.

@Don22  That is where you are wrong .Watched him play Memorial Cup.on the Edmonton Oil kings other championship play, etc.If you think is going to come into the N HL and change he is not, he is not Physical de man.His Father  was  a stick checker  and he is too, but he had a lot more offensive skills  then his son and could score .This kid got a big shot from the point I will give you that.  At this point in his Career  that is all I am giving you. Mattaa has been playing North American hockey for only 3 years! One Pro and Two Juniors for the Hunters and he at this point in there careers,He is leaps and bounds ahead of Reinhardt.Last 2 games minutes for Mattaa 24 minutes ,and you are right I was wrong he didnt have 25 minute he had 27 against the Rangers and was the best De Man on the ice. He is a plus 3 for the year.I am an Islander fan I hope Reinhardt turns out to be Denis Potvin.but I think the reason he went so high was because his Father. Now the other Reinhardt his brother different story.Love that kids play.Everyone has an opinion, just because you can Spell dont make you an Authority on Hockey.Responding to 18 year old mentality, maybe you are 18 sorry if you are.

Everything about this organization right now is so toxic it's starting to make me feel physically sick. I sincerely doubt that Wang is happy burning the enormous amounts of money he's lost. I also refuse to believe he's just sitting back and happy with the losing...

His incredible ineptness at running a professional sports club, however, is undeniable. I will never understand how he latches onto certain individuals (i.e. Snow, DiPietro, Yashin, Milbury). The only logical explanation I could come up with is that he is extremely pompous.

He tried to redefine the protocol of running a sports franchise with his "committee" idea. He seems to think that there's value in "showing stability" by rarely letting the hammer fall on personnel that are proven completely ineffective in what they do. In short, he's been constantly going against the common wisdom that all other professional sports teams employ...and why?

There are no stockholders that are going to sell because the GM is fired or the coach is tossed to the curb and forecasts for company earnings look in doubt. The "stockholders" are the fans who spend their hard earned money on a team they care passionately about. It's his obligation to get with the program already, stop pretending he is actively redefining how to run a sports team, admit his faults and apologize to the fans.

He was SO sure of himself when he instilled Snow as GM (and consequently alienating good men like LaFontaine) that this is "something he wants to try." I wish I could go back to those interviews and see if he ever said he would accept responsibility if this fails. Well at this point it's pretty obvious this has been a failed experiment, and at the cost of the fans' sanity and money. I could care less at this point how much money he's lost, because he got in way over his head by pushing forth with this plan.

I'm not going to beat to death the points on why Capuano should not be coach and why Snow should voluntarily step down if he had any care in the world for the team (he became GM in July of 2006. 7 years later he's proven...what exactly?) This season we saw proven coaches like Laviolette get canned, and we've seen GM's in Calgary and Buffalo get canned. Why is it impossible for the Islanders to conceive such a thing?

From a fan's standpoint, you can blame the players all you want but is it even fair at this point? What did you expect from any outcast player that's been cherry picked off of waivers just because roster spots had to be filled? Did Snow have such a vision that teams like LA, Vancouver, Pittsburg, and Toronto didn't? Are guys like Nabakov at fault for showing their age and receiving an overpaid contract because yet again, Snow couldn't do his job to fill vacancies? I'd say the only savvy move Snow EVER did was having Tim Thomas's contract count towards the cap without having to actually pay it.

No, I think at this point the most pressing "upgrades" the team needs is in the Islanders brass. If Wang still wants to own the team, and all indicators show he does, he needs to stop interfering, be a true sports team owner, and bring in the RIGHT people that are experienced to get the job done. He needs to get over himself and his billionaire ego and realize running a software company is vastly different than running a sports franchise. Only when that happens, FA's will feel a little more secure they aren't stepping into a cluster**** of a situation and that a true contender is achievable on Long Island.

Until then I will hopelessly go back and forth in my head of all the reasons why the coach should be fired, the GM should be fired, and players should be traded. Until then I will refuse to go to games, not to punish the team, but to hopefully open Wang's eyes with the only message he might understand...dollars and cents. I apologize for the long rant. Not too many people want to hear an Islanders fans' thoughts anymore. Islanders fans however would love to hear SOMETHING from their own beloved team...

You think stats is what hockey is all about,Don?  This kids playing 25 minutes a game in his first year .Tell me Don ,what 19 year old  1st year de man is logging 25 minutes on a first place team in the N.H.L right now? He is right now the top d man on pittsburgh with the injuries to  Martin and Letang Pittsburgh.is 9-1  with them out of the lineup.   This kid is running their defense and Excuse me for misspelling a Finnish hockey players last Name wrong LOL.Yeah that never happens.Reinhardt was the 6th rated de man in that draft .We had the third pick that year we could have done better.Dumba,Reiley Pouliot,Ma'a'tta,Ceci then Reinhardt

did anyone read that CBS article? worst article I ever read.  If they want to make Snow the scapegoat thats fine. the team is playing horrible so really anyone is open to take blame for whats going on. coach owner gm etc..(mostly coach in my opinion)

But when you back up your article with solutions such as keeping streit would fix your defense and emery would have solved your goaltending issues thats laughable.  If anything using those examples as problem solvers reinforces that Snow did the correct thing in avoiding last years free agent class for the most part instead of signing another inconsistent goaltender and an aging offensive defenseman to bad contract.

Botta's Right it's not over yet. Just put these next three games in the win column at it changes everything. Grabs is gonna have a huge second half and that's gonna help big time. I don't think we see viz again I'm thinking this is bad. But we r going to have to make it work. Can't wait to see how we respond on fri. It's going to say a lot

MY prediction Ollie Mattaa wins Rookie of the year, 3 years ago I picked him 3rd best talent in that draft and everyone including here said youre nuts! He came out of the same draft as Reinhardt and is getting 25 minutes a game for Pittsburgh and is 19 Years OLD !.Matt Moulson was a really talented hockey player not just because he scoring ability , watch him play he did all the little things right .He was always one step ahead of where the puck is going to be,Shame we lost Him. That line needed a big Forward ,sorry Snow you do not no youre Arse from youre Elbow. It would have be nice if we got Ryan and had a line like this MOULSON Taveras Ryan. How many goals you think that line would have scored?Second line Nelson Strome lee 3rd line okposo Nielsen Move Czikas to left side from Center.Okposo Nielsen Czikas.4th line Martin Sundstrom Grabner .De Men1 Hamonic  Dehaan2.Streit  Donovan3.Amac  Visnovsky if He ever comes back. That is a playoff team, with the right Coach. So all we would  have had to do was pay one player Ryan big bucks keep Moulson and bring up the kids. This management does not want to win .Wang will sell the team day he moves to Brooklyn he is not spending a dime till then.Prediction with this management dead last in the nhl maybe because the injuries oilers last. Next years draft .1.OILers2.islanders 3.Columbus4.Florida5.Nashville6.Carolina

I'm with you. I'm afraid it won't happen with Wang as owner. I truly believe he is a smug, arrogant, egotistical nightmare. To me, this is a hobby for a wealthy moron who couldn't make it as a right fielder in little league. All I want for Christmas is.......

@truth77@Don22 The last 4 games or so the Pens have had 4 AHL and the said 19 year old on D. None of them look out of place. Have to believe they are receiving much better coaching at the AHL level then what our guys are getting in Bridgeport. Helps too that the forwards are hustling big time to help these young guys out. Our D takes a lot of heat and rightfully so at times, but the forwards are critical for team defense and of course good goaltending pretty important too.

Don22
Don22

@truth77@Don22Yes, check your stats.  He's not getting 25 minutes per game.  And Yes, stats do matter - when you are trying to tab someone as the rookie of the year.  I don't watch they guy, so I'll go by what you say about playing well.  Let's not forget that he is with Pittsburgh, so it's pretty easy to look good on that team.  It's a lot easier for a rookie to fit in and play well when he has a good supporting cast around him.  Reinhart wouldn't have that here.  My bet is if Maata was playing with the Isles he wouldn't look as good purely because of the support around him.

But again, I will go with what you are saying about him playing well.

And how can you say that we could have done better if Reinhart hasn't played a pro game yet.  You are basing a draft on 1/3 of a pro season?  Let's table this discussion a few years and then we'll see.  You very well may be right - but not yet.

Snow is an azz puppet. Lottery trip yearly. He "needed to make a trade to shake things up" and the team has tanked since while he went Helen Keller on us. The money given to Bailey is roughly what PA got from Colorado. Nabby was given a raise after actually playing as bad as Fleury last season. He has built the blue line by waiver grabs. Most of his own draft picks have failed to different levels. A guy he reached for and took fifth overall was dealt for a 4th liner. How this arrogant in over his head errand boy gets any pass is really perplexing.

camb33

@truth77 those might be the worst line combos I have ever read. you were able to use an imaginary bobby ryan instead of bailey and Mouslen back over vanek and they still made no sense and were down right laughable.  Nowhere in your incoherent rambling did you come anywhere close to what could be considered rational thought.  I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.

@Chris R Thank you! I'm glad we have support groups like this lol

We've endured so many years of weirdness, neglect, and disrespect, and I think my biggest issue with things right now is not even the winless count racking up...it's the inexcusable silence on all fronts. I never ever EVER wanted to say I would consciously stop going to games to make a statement, but I feel like it's the only type of thing I can do to voice my opinion. Either that or we setup a section to protest things like how it was done against SMG before the team was sold in the late 90s.

My heart has already been ripped out of my chest this season, if they lose tonight against a typical underachieving Rangers team...well it will just literally take that still beating heart before my eyes and drop an anvil on it.

neeza06

@Don22 I assume your saying that moulson is prob gonna get that money from some team on the open market and will be 100% overpaid. If thats the case that makes your comment even better.  Anyone who gives him top winger money is making a big mistake and getting a very limited player.

@neeza06@Don22Exactly.  He is going to get it.  His offensive stats are up there with guys making 6 to even 8 million per year. Dreadful works, too.  And that adjective can also be used in applications describing both the Sabres and Islanders.  As a matter of fact, the only difference right now between the two teams are four OT losses.  We actually could end up with the most balls in the draft lottery...
