Kevin Schultz, Islanders Point Blank:

The Islanders won today’s game in overtime. Well, until they lost it again in the shootout.

After blowing leads of 2-0 and 3-2, the Islanders managed to get a goal in overtime to secure the win. Or so everyone thought. The MSG broadcast was convinced it was a good goal, as were the Islanders, the refs who ruled it a goal, and even St. Louis’ netminder, Jaroslav Halak, who skated off. But the play was sent to Toronto for review (or did Toronto phone in?) and Thomas Vanek’s apparent winner was overturned. I can’t explain how, it looked awfully good to me as well. Here’s the leagues, er, “explanation“.

“I thought it was a terrible call,” Thomas Vanek said after the game. “I don’t know if it’s who we are. If that’s Pittsburgh or some of those top teams, maybe that’s a goal.”

So now the talk turns to the Islanders being screwed by the refs (the refs called it a good goal, remember) and the NHL hates the Islanders and someone or something is out to get them. I get it. It’s understandable and justified when a call is so, so blatantly wrong. If you think there’s a but coming, you are correct.

But…

The Islanders found a way to blow yet another lead. They shouldn’t have been in overtime in the first place. Hell, the way the third period unfolded with the St. Louis Blues hitting three (!) posts, the Islanders could have even lost in regulation. They blew leads of 2-0 and 3-2 with the final dagger coming with 27 second left in the final period.

Here’s a rather amazing stat:

In today’s third period, they were absolutely hemmed into their own zone for the latter half of the third period. But a rough estimate, the Blues led the Isles in shot attempts 13-3 in the final ten minutes of the third. The Blues hit a bunch of posts. The Isles also got bailed out by Kevin Poulin making a ridiculous save:

poulin_0 copy3

So the Islanders got screwed, yes.

The Islanders also did themselves in (again), yes.

Did anyone see the stat in the Newsday that showed we have had 2-0 leads 14 times this year and only have won 6 of those games in regulation? That as much as any stat shows why we are in lottery land and not much higher in the standings.

I guess we now know where Rob Ford is. He's the new head of disputed goals in Toronto. What a joke.

Can't wait to get Lubo back, hopefully on Wednesday. He needs to wake up this horrific defense.

I dont get why unless an extension is part of the package or they arent giving up much in terms of prospects for him. this move would have made sense a lot earlier in the year but why trade anything for a soon to be UFA with little hope of making the playoffs this season. Even with Miller we arent a cup contender this year (but would be if he stayed). At this point without an extension i wouldnt give up anyting higher then a third round pick because all your really trading for is 25 games (many of which could end up being meaningless). I am sure buffalo is asking for a lot more than that. I guess we dont know since no further details are available but you would think the smarter play is to wait and make a bid on Hiller, Miller or one of a few other solid UFA's this July.

it all comes down to the unbelievable number of games we lose in the last 2-5 minutes when we are leading.  That's conditioning, mentally and physically, which is all on coaching staff.

Get rid of the mickey mouse coach.

I am sorry but even more important than a goalie and a defense is a new Coach. Cappy is never going to be a good coach. I don't dislike him. However I hate him as our coach. No matter how bad a team is, when u lose games after leading the way the isles do it falls on the coaching staff. Cappy has to go, I don't want the heir apparent in Weight, but hell even the equipment manager could potentially be an improvement. When the isles have won games if is in spite of Cappy not because of him.

20-8? 19-9?

There is not even enough information given in those hypotheticals.

As i believe even this handle knows, the points system comes from total wins-regulation losses-overtime losses- and tiebreaker is "ROW" wins in regulation.

Additionally, wins in regulation prevent the opposing team from concurrently getting points added to their total.

Bottom line is this team is bottom 5 with a 15-25 in regulation record and worse goaltending and overall rosters than all the teams they chase sans the Caps.

Listen, i will not bite on the smoke being blown in a low direction. Folks can beleive what they want. I've overheard a baglady who believes that she's Joni Mitchell. Beliefs are quaint. Just don't expect that it's gonna happen.

Its very simple, if the Islanders go 20 and 8 they would get in the playoffs. Probably 19 and 9 would do it also. If not then on June 27 you'll hear with the 3rd,4th,5th or 6th pick the Islanders select Sam Reinhart, Leon Draisaitl, Sam Bennett or William Nylander. With the present goaltending i don't see it happening.

did anyone notice ..if you take the vanek overhead re play being shown on other thread..and turn your screen clockwise so the net is at top of the screen..it looks a whole lot more like a kick...not sure if its an optical illusion or what..but check it out..

On a side note. Watching rags-devils now, does anyone else think that nbc and NBC sports net have the worst camera angles. Saw it a lot during pens game the other day too. They seem to think they have to either show 1/3 of the ice at a time or up close in the corners. Also very jerky with the camera. On the new yrs winter classic. I was able to compare the us feed to the Canadian one and boy was there a difference.

It is a Bad Owned and run Team

truth77

Most Teams make a deal  trade and sign ,Vanek would have already agreed. Not this Organization this is what make the fans here furious. The trade for Moulson was not the sore piece, it was the draft picks. As for draft picks they have one legit superstar a no Brainer pick and a nice hockey player in Okposo with Ooddles and Ooddles of high first round picks .Pittsburgh in one draft pick 2 year ago picked four guys that will be in the starting lineup in the next few years, and they pick near the bottom! This Organization with all the picks should be in the playoffs every year anything else is failure!10 years is not a rebuild !Its a bad Owned and run.Wang is not a Community Organizer but he runs the club like one.

I hope that Poulin realizes that to validate his highlight reel save, he has to stop those wrist shots from the slot.  The team will not survive spotting a bad or at least a savable goal per game.  That said we gained a point on Philly - move on.

@neeza06 Have to agree at this point in the season what would Miller bring back league wide?  For the Isles I agree they would have to have a negotiation window and him in the bag if they move assets for him.

Zee Executioner

I'll even add this: if the Islanders win 10 games in regulation in a row at any point, they'll make it.

And if Alyssa Milano shows up at my doorstep in a nighty and my wife is cool with it, it's gonna be a helluva night!

@mitchfritz i just did what you said..and i really don't see his skate making any extra move to redirect the puck..He skate remains in one continuous motion as he is checked...

@truth77I get what you are saying, but you are making the assumption that Vanek would sign a deal right after the trade.  It would be stupid for him to do that unless the Isles threw out an insane offer.  No upper tier UFA is going to sign in their walk year, especially one in which they are getting to play with JT and put up major points.  He would be doing himself a disservice.

@Vicp73 @dkdk  -Morning Gents. Dk, I heard the staggering stat on NHL on the fly post game Blues/Isles.

As I have posted many of times, this goes back to the Scott Gordon era, more than four years of this. It's amusing that the Pro-Wangers in here have failed to write some POSITIVE BS..er comments on this.

Ahh, but we are progressing! Slithering Wang will open up his wallet and sign Vanek and all will be OK once the move is made to the BK gym in Brooklyn. And we can't forget the army of defensive prospects getting seasoned in the minors so Snow, Cappy, and Doug Weight can whip them into NHL readiness, LOL.

Goaltending you ask Vic?? No problema! Snow will ship Poulin out in a mastermind deal for a shut down Dman to compliment the herd of blue line studs in waiting, then the Emperor will continue his wild spending spree, signing one or maybe even two of the many UFA net minders that will be available.

Yeah, that's it. In one summer, Wacky Wang and the Snowman will do a complete turn around and shift into winning gear. We the fans, may even get a monthly Q&A to the duo. You know, like most other franchises in the league do, communicate with folks that walk thru the turn stiles.

A new palace in Brooklyn, prospects up the wazzu, free agent signings on the horizon, and...and...and... What more can we ask for gents?

dkdk
dkdk

How've you been Vic? Crazy! In a league where virtually no one averages 3 goals a game having less that 11 or so would be tough to understand. But 6 .... That is less than half!

Don22
Don22

@dzruggie@neeza06At this point I don't see any sense in a trade for a goalie unless he is locked up and considered part of the future.  Unless maybe Vanek told them he would sign if they bring in Miller?  Can't imagine that, but other people make up things - why can't I?

dkdk
dkdk

That is the only change that will change anything sham

Blake Waldman
Blake Waldman

@shamwow @Blake Waldman  I don't really have a problem with wang… I am sure he believes he is doing the best for his team, and has saved us for a loooong time from being moved or just being extinct, regardless of liking his moves…

honestly if we had any other owner, do you think we wouldn't be in canada by now?

give wang props… he has kept the team here, which if he had sold the team we probably wouldn't still be here.

And I like snow too….. say what they will, he has hockey knowledge and unlike most athletes also serious education behind him, he is a smart guy and has made some nice moves - and probably has a dart board of wang in his bedroom closet also.

the problem with wang is he knows nothing about hockey and trusts in what people he trust tells him... and has been suckered by a long line of folks that figured out it was all about being friends, not competent.

@Zee Executioner  Dude you really gotta calm down. You take this stuff way too seriously. Let me simplify it. I don't think who ever gets the 8th spot will have 90 points. If the Islanders some how go 20 and 8 they'll make the playoffs. I also said i don't see that happening with there present goaltending. You really gotta look into a psychiatrist.

mitchfritz
mitchfritz

@Zee Executioner

I was trying to come up with a scenario were they make it yesterday..pretty much I came up with same number as you..i have it at 9 ..if they can rip off a 9 game win streak, winning all  in conference games in regulation..they can do it..but winining 1 and losing one..winning 2 and losing 1..not gonna get it done..

mitchfritz
mitchfritz

@Chris R @mitchfritz

but theres motion..  on the other angle it looks almost as though his skate is standing still..not saying it wasn't a goal..but it definitely gives it a different twist

Don22
Don22

@Chris R I just wrote that before seeing this post.  Absolute disgrace that it wasn't at least reviewed.  But then that might bring attention to the last puck "kicked in" and the NHL doesn't want that to come up on the telecast.  Move on as quickly as possible and pretend nothing happened.

dzruggie
dzruggie

@mitchfritz @dzruggie Seriously I was saying move on the next game and try to beat Boston.....This hole is deep  and as you mention the teams ahead of them have games in hand -  it is a tough bet to lay down (them making the playoffs)

@zee. "I am calm". Followed immediately by a post in all caps with multiple exclamation marks. Let me ask you, do you know what calm means?

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

Perhaps, it is you that needs a shrink...i am calm - i think there's just a little projection going on on your part. Delusional, grandiose thinking you exhibit is not flattering.

Let your minion friends come to your defense on that, bud.

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

Mitch, let's face it. There is NO WAY they are winning and stringing games together in regulation. It's not happening.

Subpar goaltending, flimsy defense, and inability to hold onto leads prevent it. They just aren't good enough to win.

Don22
Don22

@mitchfritz@Chris RMats Zuccarello's 1st goal in yesterday's game went in off his skate. He didn't kick at it, but he certainly angled his skate to direct it towards the net.  That wasn't even reviewed.   Maybe they could argue he didn't kick, but they should have at least reviewed it.  Garbage.

camb33
camb33

@Zee Executioner I didn't see Sumo goalie on your list......guess he never made it to the bigs

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

Just to wrap-up what we're both saying....look at the goalies of the teams ahead

Columbus: Bobrovsky (Wanglanders have no one even comparable)

Montreal: Price (Wanglanders have no one comparable)

Detroit: Howard (wanglanders have no one comparable)

Flyers: Mason (has a 913%...no one comparable)

Hurricanes: (Khudobin 927%... should be on the islanders)

Devils (do i really need to even type?)

Ottawa: Anderson (Wanglanders, no one comparable)

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

Actually, the Caps are one of the teams i see in complete freefall. Don't think they're making it, but that kind of reinforces our point. They're the worst of the bunch, and the Isles are 8 points in back of them

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

Especially when 4 of the 6 are MUCH better teams, night in and out

Zee Executioner

As i have repeated before, when you lose 25 games in regulation in this format, you are done.

....at least if the month is January.

mitchfritz

@Zee Executioner

for all their effort lately ..basicaly nothings changed they sit right were they did in early dec. maybe a point or 2 swing here and there but pretty much standing still

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

Dz, God love you, but it ain't happening. They're not good enough.

From the net out, they are a bottom 5 team, and their record bears that out.

That is 1,000,000,000,000% on Garf Snowblow and his swindler criminal boss.

Bernier, Khudobin, and many others (schnieder?) all were available. Snowang = complete disaster.

I said in August that this last offseason of doing nothing will be a program killer, and it was - the results are cominginto fruition, now, and it smells like what this organization is:
