Bob McKenzie Discusses the Isles Options for their First Round Pick

Kevin Schultz

TSN’s Bob McKenzie was on the TSN Drive on 1050 AM in Toronto on Thursday. After discussing the situation in Toronto with goaltender James Reimer, McKenzie spent the rest of the segment discussing the Islanders.

One of the main focus points was the draft pick that the Islanders owe to the Buffalo Sabres for the Thomas Vanek trade and whether they will keep it this year or defer it to next year. If the pick ends up in the top-10 of the draft, and based on this season that’s pretty much assured, the Islanders have the option to defer it to next year’s draft in 2015.

McKenzie discussed that the Islanders will have until June 1 – after the draft lottery — to let the league and the Sabres know what they would like to do with the pick. He also thought that there is going to be a revision to the draft lottery system for 2015 – not 2014 – and that no one really knows what that revision will look like. He speculated that it could mean the last-place team has less of a chance of winning the lottery or as many as the top three picks will be lotteried.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the system, his prediction was that the Islanders will keep the pick this year if it turns out to be a top-three pick and “roll the dice” next year. The panel also asked him if the Islanders would keep the pick this year and consider trading it, but he said the trade market for first round picks this year was reduced because of the lack of a true superstar in this year’s draft.

In McKenzie’s opinion, he thought the Isles are a better team than they were this year and that without injuries and a few changes they can be a playoff team next season, as he believed last year’s version of the team was a more accurate representation of their ability.

And finally, the panel discussed Martin Brodeur and his desire to leave New Jersey. It was suggested that Minnesota – where his kids play hockey at Shattuck St. Mary’s – or Long Island would be good destinations. McKenzie thought he might be an interesting addition to the Islanders once they make the move to Brooklyn. However, since the Islanders won’t be in Brooklyn this year and Brodeur is year-to-year at his age, it would be an unlikely scenario.

Hopefully it will be a top 3 pick where we can we draft a 6'2" inch guy then right before he is ready to make it in the NHL we can trade him for a 4th line winger

One things for sure Wango isn't gonna spend any cash,so he will pocket as much as he can until the team moves. We can blame general managers and coaches and who built what and who drafted who if the Owner doesn't spend especially in sports today that shows lack of commitment starting from the top and no one will want to come or stay

It is sad when I am actually looking forward to the NVMC renovation with hopes a minor league team comes in.  It would be hard to switch my rooting energy to another NHL team, but not hard to put it into a minor league team.

I will always bleed blue and orange, but even this glass half full guy is having trouble believing better days are possible.

please read this piece. it's the most objective, succinct, thoughtful bit of prose i've read offering truthful analysis on what ails the franchise. i have never met the writer but if this story ran in the new york times, newsday the post, etc., it would really put the pressure on charles and the gm. unfortunately it's a blog but if it could find some spotlight in the mainstream…..this is the kind of opinion that one could only wish arthur staple at newsday would have the courage to offer.

No way the isles trade strome. Give the young man some time he's still got to mature. We do need goalie!!!! Reinhardt gunna be a beast next year. Reallu like him as a shutdown defender!! And can we please stop complaining about the vanek trades! They aee in the past! Garth went for it n failed. I'm glad he tried! But failed bad. I say we keep the pick this year n take one of the young forwards. We will b much better next year but we need a GOALIE!!

In other news,  Vanek follows up his hat-trick with a great one timer that temporarily tied the game,. before Nino's Junior teammate(who was picked one spot before him) Johnansen wins it with a great individual effort.  Hoping Strome can develop like Johansen has.

Meanwhile in Philly Streit scores on a blast on the PP in another Philly win, and Philly has only lost once in regulation since they traded for Macdonald? 5-1-1

Maybe you can win with Islander's D on it afterall.

Callahan would be a nice second line addition but his asking price 6-7 yrs is too much of a commitment to a guy who gets hurt a lot but I love his grit net presence and leadership!!

What about going after Callahan? Played across the river and may have family/friends still the NY area. Plus I'm sure he'd love to stick it to the Rangers.

Just listened to the interview again with Bob Mckenzie. To quote the host, " I don't know how Garth Snow survives this mess?"

"We keep wondering what it will take to get Garth Snow fired?"  is another direct quote from the host later in the segment.

That was just two of quite a few negative Snow comments during the segment, which wasn't that long actually.

Yet that is not brought up in the article on top at all, I wonder why?

I love how this draft decision is becoming some sort of strategy decision when in fact it is a situation and decision made necessary by a totally inept GM! The Isles lose out no matter when they pick. This year or next.

Who here would not rather have MM and our 2014 and 2015 first round picks?

@kicksave Thanks for posting that. Only the most die-hard, blindly optimistic fan would find reason to support this organization while under Wang's command. I tapped out a few weeks ago after the Florida game. Haven't been to, nor watched a game since. Still watch plenty of hockey, but not the awful variety offered by the NYI.

@kicksave

Besides the use of the adjective 'decomposing' to describe Nabokov,,, which has to illicit some type of laugh as you read it,,, there is another comment in there that begs an explanation.  It concerns the handling of Nino Niederreiter, a much discussed topic on this board.  The writer intimates the reason Niederreiter spent the entire 2011-2012 season on the Isles roster was strictly for cap purposes.  It seems that the CBA used bonus money to factor into the cap.  Nino's salary was in the $900K range, but with bonuses a $3 million cap hit.  By playing him with Reasoner and Pandolfo for most of that year on a poor fitting line, there was absolutely no way he was going to attain those bonuses.  Could this be Wang's accounting department in coordination with the coaching staff at work circumventing the salary cap???  Why not believe that of the team that traded a conditional second round draft pick for what was essentially Tim Thomas' contract, knowing full and well he was officially retired???  This move was made just to get to the cap floor and that pick was never going to get sent to Boston.  This kind of stuff demands some type of explanation from this organization,,, but I'm not about to hold my breath awaiting any answers...

@kicksave  i read the article its 100% the truth. what needs to happen right now is somebody needs to force out wang.. he is responsible.its all him.nobody else. force him out. step in governor bettman.  as for you wang, your a loser a pathetic fraud disgrace. icing  the lowest salary cap floor team year after year after year.

firecappy

@kicksave  Seriously bro?  This is the most "thoughtful bit of prose"?  After all your hype this story was a tremendous let down and, in my opinion, this really isn't a good piece at all.  The 2006 Islanders were built by Neil Smith?  He worked for them for like 40 days in 2006 and made no significant moves in that time.

The author speaks so highly of the Avalanche drafting.  They had 2 picks in the top 2.  We passed on Duchene for Tavares.  Was that a bad move?  Landeskog went #2 overall and MacKinnion #1.  MacKinnion looks like a future superstar but he went #1 and Landeskog went #2.  We didn't have a shot at either of those guys.  As an Islanders fan are you unhappy with draft picks like Tavares, Okposo, Strome and Reinhart?  Anders "Straight to the Net" Lee doesn't look like a tremendous steal in the 6th round?

I am in no way sticking up for Snow but this story has no information that the knowledgeable people on these message boards didn't already know.  From reading this story I "learned" that the Islanders have a shitty coach, their GM makes bad decisions, the team spends no money and signs shitty free agents. Thanks for the breaking news.

He would have stayed, I'm sure he would not have tried to get anything but a fair contract.  He certainly wanted to stay here.  Chemistry is so underrated by many when it comes to hockey.

Vicp73
Vicp73

@firecappy  Well yeah, and the fact that they were spot on with those picks say's a lot, how about drafting Ryan O'reilly 33rd overall? And what about the ability to trade for a starting goalie Semyon Varlamov who today is a complete stud. Shoring up the Blueline with the Eric Johnson trade, Or signing Cory Sarich as FA to add veteran leadership on the back end. Moves that competent organization make to get themselves into 4th place in the Western Conference ahead of teams like the Blackhawks.

So yes, the author should speak highly of the Avs, because they followed the re-build blueprint with success.

Tavares was a no brainer, Okposo was a Neil Smith draft, Strome and Reinhart haven't done sh-t to be even mentioned

@willymayshays  Where did I say I didn't want MM? I in fact said just the opposite. The trade was a total mistake and the Loss of MM will have long term effects when our next big  contracts, OK  and JT come up! I think the  Isles need to redo both those contracts now to show some loyalty. MM was a loyal Isle who was better than average, a good team mate and a solid citizen who was kicked to the curb. That will not be forgotten by anybody!

madmike
madmike

@willymayshays I agree Willy.  Moulson would have stayed for sure.  At reasonable dollars and term.  That's the ridiculous part of this trade.  Trade comparable players.  One wants to be with the team.  The other doesn't.  And then throw two picks in besides!!!!

tag1
tag1

@dkdk  From a Strang ESPN article on Oct 11, 2013:

"I think it's no secret I hope [Moulson] is here beyond this season and for many years," Tavares said. "We understand each other very well and have great chemistry, so I really hope he can stay around, not just for my benefit, but the team's."

Both have been so integral to the team's recent revitalization that neither can imagine what it would be like if they were to play apart.

"It'd be tough," Tavares said. "I try not to think about it."

Said Moulson: "Hopefully, we never have to go down that road."

We all know what happened right after that.

@firecappy He signed Sillinger Witt Poti Simon (who hadnt fully gone nuts yet) and starting negotiating with Kozlov who eventually signing....plus he drafted Okposo and Amac (who ending up logging a ton of ice time for Isles) Yeah he did nothing in 40 days......if he wasnt fired on July 10th or so imagine what he couldve done?

firecappy
firecappy

@Jeff Roland  I am in no way sticking up for Snow.  He sucks.  I was in his corner until last summer when he had an easy solution in net and didn't take it.  Trading for Vanek was the final straw for me.

My point was just that the author of the article acts like we had the chance to get MacKinnion and Landeskog when we did not.  Nobody can even argue that drafting Josh Bailey wasn't a complete disaster.  It caused a major rift between Snow and Nolan.  Nolan was doing a really good job here.

Obviously we don't know how the prospects in the system will turn out but a recent article in THN or the Bleacher Report (I forgot which one) had the Islanders prospect pool at number 4 overall in the NHL.  How long how have we been waiting for a guy like Lee that goes straight to the net?  He is a bull and was a great surprise for us and he was a 6th round pick.  Drafting over the past 4 years hasn't the problem as much as development of prospects which goes back to being a shitty, third rate organization.

firecappy
firecappy

@Jeff Roland  Okposo was drafted in 2006.  He didn't play on the Islanders in 2006.  Again, how did Neil Smith build the 2006 Islanders?

Tag, I agree with your assessment I also wonder what JT may have been promised when he re upped his contract, Wang, and Snow probably reneged on that promise, it could be another reason he may be pi$$ed at them, and also to leave this team sooner, rather then later.
