Boyle Comes With Risk, But is Needed

Kevin Schultz

Yesterday the Islanders acquired Dan Boyle from the San Jose Sharks for a conditional draft pick in the hopes of trading for and signing their second UFA-to-be in as many months. Boyle, who turns 38 next month, could be a solid veteran defenseman and power play specialist if he decides to sign with the Islanders.

Boyle would be along the lines of the acquisitions of Evgeni Nabokov and Lubomir Visnovsky, veterans nearing forty on the backend of their career who, for an indeterminate amount of time, can be very useful and solid players.

Last season in San Jose, Boyle was middle of the pack among Sharks defenders as far fenwick and corsi go, which isn’t bad. San Jose was a good defensive team, allowing the fifth fewest goals per game in the league and the sixth fewest shots allowed, so getting a middle of the pack defender from them is clearly a good thing. Especially for the Islanders who allowed the third most goals in the league.

The catch with Boyle is of course his age — you never know if guys will keep up production and when (not if) they’ll all of a sudden fall of a cliff — and the other issue is concussions. Like Lubomir Visnovsky, Boyle missed a significant part of last season due to concussion issues.

At 37, Boyle was looking for more than a one-year deal, and the Sharks, even before the playoffs, were not willing to offer one. Boyle acknowledged he struggled much of the year to recover from a concussion suffered Oct. 15 but said two weeks ago that he thought his game had improved over the past month and a half.

And here’s more from January, when Boyle talked about returning to the ice and how he may have done so too early:

“I was a second slow out there — everything, my stride, my reaction time. Everything was just a little slow,” he said. “And that’s all it takes. All it takes in this game is just half a second. And it was creating a lot of problems.”

Boyle is still a defender the Islanders need. He had 36 points in 75 games, 18 of those on the power play, for San Jose last year despite these issues. Even at 38, he should still have a good year (or couple of years?) left in the tank. But, as with Visnovsky, it now comes with the added risks of concussion issues.

so i was all but certain that the rangers would end up buying out richards this summer....now im thinking nash is the one that'll be bought out.  a larger cap hit with much less production (regular season included).  that contract is ugly, and theres nothing to say that this is just a cold spell.  nash hasnt played like an elite player since coming to NYR.

As for the Rangers, I don't see them winning. It's tough to have a lead on the Kings, and they know it. It's been a close series, but I think the Kings just might sweep them. It's not easy when you go into panic mode while you're UP by two!

It may have been discussed earlier in the thread, but I don't feel like sifting through.  What are thoughts about the "non call" for goalie interference on the Kings 3rd goal?  I thought Micheletti said it best on the post game that a penalty on that play can be called or not called and either way you couldn't really complain about it.  He seems to be a lot more unbiased than Duguay or Rosen.  I'm not blaming those 2 guys - they are talking heads for the Rangers and both bleed Rangers - but I felt they harped on it a bit, as if it was on the game winning goal.

Prediction: The Rangers will still win the Stanley Cup. There that ought to finish them. My record continued. I predicted California Chrome would not win the Belmont. Right on target. Then I put my money on the horse I said would win....Riding Curlin who finished last. Oh, not really....he didn't even finish...he was pulled because he was so far behind. My record continues! So, once more, the Rangers will win the Stanley Cup.

Rocco here. This system for posting and logging in is a JOKE. I cannot get in to my old posting account...

If Snow can sign Boyle, this will give the back side D some added beef, on both sides on the blue line. I am shocked, yes shocked, that Halak signed. I hope he is OK and can solidify the goal-tending issue.

Still plenty to do, especially on the back up scenario in net and a LW for the first line. Is Viz OK to return? Viz on the D side is not the answer, but on the PP with Boyle would be a good 1-2 punch.

Rooting for the Kings to wipe out Queen Henrik and the Rags is the only fuel left for the next few months, leading to the draft and free agency.

Waiting for the sale or not is draining...

I actually find myself having the same rooting INTESITY for the kings as I do when I root for the isles!

As I read somewhere......watching this final is like root canal without novocaine! Slept so much better knowing the kings won!

Went to a Farmingdale restaurant to catch Belmont with a glass of wine. Decided to eat at the bar to watch the Rag game. Can I just say that I was totally disgusted. The whole wait staff, and all the bartenders were Ranger fans. When it became obvious we were rooting for the Kings, they seemed stunned and our service declined! I actually complimented our server and said the Rags are a good team and congratulated him on their awesome run. When he started telling me how he enjoys going to the Coli with his Ranger jersey and taunting the idiotic Islander fans......the gloves were off! Seriously, I have been working in the city 2 days a week and have seen 3 Islander t-shirts, and an Islander Jersey. On Long Island....NOTHING!! ....The move to Brooklyn is looking better!

The Islanders will be in the SCF next year. Here's why:

- Jack Capuano will be the most improved coach in the league now that he has players to work with.

- Jaroslav Halak will be the next Dominik Hasek. He'll post a .998 Save Percentage

- Dan Boyle will quarterback the power play, have 18 PP goals, 44 PP assists, and 96 points

- Griffin Reinhart will be rookie of the year while post 76 points

- Vanek will re-sign, and he'll score 87 goals this year with JT setting him up all the time

- Josh Bailey will explode with 104 goals and 106 assists

- Ryan Strome will probably score about 55 in his first full season

The Rangers will come close this year, but the Islanders will actually win next year!

@slapshot18_rs I think it's a coin flip.  Nash has actually been better in the 2 years he has been there over Richards' 3 years.  Last year Nash was almost a point per game and they both had the same PPG this year - Nash only played 65 games.

Personally, I would buy out Richards, who is almost 5 years older.  But I wouldn't be shocked if it were Nash.  One will probably go, especially if they don't win the cup.

@Jason Zimmermann

Jason, With the Rangers blowing 2 goal leads in the first 2 games, it seems to me they caught a disease, called Islanderitis, it could be fatal, the Isles blew so many games with the lead they lost their chance of making the playoffs this year, and the same with the Rangers they will not advance to win the cup.

We can all 'thank' Wang for that move which will be the death knell for this team without some major improvements on talent.

You're way off base. Objectively, these have been two very entertaining games. Both decided in sudden death. End to end action, physical play, 14 goals in 2 games, incredible game saving saves by both goalies, breakaways... Etc. Just enjoy it for the great hockey that it is. The best sport.

@Jason Zimmermann You have to be the most facetious person to post on this site. Sometimes some of your posts get a chuckle, but I fail to see the humour in this rant. It just isn't funny IMO. I know you're entitled to say what you want, I'm just saying this ain't funny.

@Don22 age is where it becomes tricky.  they'll be stuck with richards til hes 40 if they dont buy him out, but nashs cap hit is absurd for the production hes giving them and has 4 more years of that.  one thing is clear, one of them has to be bought out this summer imo.

since72

@jepliberty Watching these playoffs, there have been multiple 2 goal and 3rd period leads given up by some very good teams.  This certainly doesn't excuse what happened to the Isles this past season, but sheds even more light on the cup years.  When the Islanders had a 3rd period lead in the early 80s, put it in the bank.  They rarely blew them.

@jepliberty the kings have everthing we lack. That simple. To get to that type of level will take a long time unless things change asap.

@slapshot18_rs Right?  LOL.  I have an Islanders charm that I have worn around my neck for 20+years.  I am a big Yankees fan, but when I go out with a cap on - it's an Islanders hat.  I have a few Isles tee shirts I wear.  I haven't bought nor worn a jersey in probably 25 years (unless playing hockey).  It doesn't make me any less of a fan.

Don22
Don22

@tpjm @erika TPJM, when you talk hockey you are pretty good.  When you start touting Brooklyn as the messiah, you start sounding like a clown.   The only thing Brooklyn is offering the Isles is a new arena - nothing else.  "Fans" will go to games there because it will be the cool thing to do.  IF the product on the ice does not improve then they will have the same issues.

Stop acting like a 12 year old shouting "my dad is better than your dad".  Enough already.

Right Don, I somet9imes wear a FDNY cap, to honor the fire department, now I never was a fireman, but I've had people in bars and such, ask me if I am a fireman, first I am way to old be to on the job but the reply I usually give them is when I wear my Yankees cap that doesn't mean I play/ played for the Yankees.

@don. Your absolutely right, it doesn't male you any less of a fan if you don't wear a jersey, BUT there are many that do wear shirts and jerseys for many teams year round. I think all Erica is saying is she has seen more of them in NYC than on LI, just an observation on her part. Something you can't say she is wrong about if that's what's she's seen.

@Don22 @tpjm @erika I'm buying 10 games and coming down from CT just because I can.  Getting to and from the Coli was difficult, but now I'll be riding the train in style.  Go Isles!

erika
erika

@Don22 @tpjm @erika Don, you are again exaggerating my point. I am not TOUTING Brooklyn, I was giving you an honest observation of what I am seeing in my travels this week in both Manhattan and Long Island. My "point", since I feel I always have to spell it out for you so you don't misinterpret it, is that I see very little allegiance on the Island towards the Islanders, and frankly, I have been seeing more and more Isle fans in the city. Believe me, I would have adored to have the Isles continue playing 15 min  from my house at a new Coli, and guess what? I think since the Brooklyn guy has the rights to build on NVMC property, I think they are all in bed together. I would not be surprised if in a few years, the Isles are back! That said, I am looking forward to a change of scenery for the team.  I agree that if they can be competitive and start winning, they will be successful no matter where they play, so what is with the insults...am I not putting things the way you can understand them??

bammer26

Don22
Don22

@erika @Don22 @tpjm My guess is you are a bit confused because the posting system shows you AND TPJM in my reply.  Maybe you had a few too many glasses of wine and didn't notice that my post started with addressing TPJM directly and was in response to his chest thumping about Brooklyn.  He likes to think that the boro itself was the reason the Isles are moving there.  The fact is, it's only because there happens to be a new arena there.  If that arena were in Queens, they would have moved there.  If it were in Brentwood they would have moved there.  Brooklyn just happened to be there by accident.

My suggestion to you is to read the posts a little better before you decide to fire away at me about a post that had absolutely nothing to do with you.

Am I not putting things the way you can understand them??

doc942
doc942

Just curious Erika, were you wearing your Islanders jersey while working in the city? Or on long island? Did you wear your Islanders jersey to the bar in Farmingdale? Because, why would you hold other islander fans to a higher standard and expect that they wear their tee shirts and jerseys while you didn't?

orange2327
orange2327

@jepliberty maybe we could introduce chuck to v.stiviano??

Don22
Don22

@erika @isles23 Erica - can it.  You need to stop being so defensive.  I thought Slapshot made a funny comment referencing the weather and I laughed.  I then gave my views on why I don't wear a jersey anymore and that I don't think it makes me less of a fan.

Both this post AND my original post - where you decided to rip me - were not directed at you or your observation in any way.   I am not a war with you so give it a rest.

orange2327
orange2327

@don22 "if there were a new arena in Brentwood they would have moved there" using that as a paradigm they should have moved to Kansas City no? Wasnt there a new arena there begging for a tennant?? In reality wang would never have moved the isles outside of the metro area and if his reputation wasnt so lousy and he backed off a little on his outlandish 77acre land grab things might have been different.isles were never moving outside the area why?? 2 words GARY BETTMAN.

doc942

Sorry Erika... but you were the one making idiotic comments equating how many Islanders jersey's you've seen with the move to Brooklyn looking like a "better" move.  As if one has anything to do with the other.

erika
erika

@doc942 Doc, will you PLEASE stop with your anal attitude already. What the hell are you even talking about? Now you are micro analyzing each sentence in a way that makes you sound pretty idiotic. I am pretty sure most  people on this site were able to figure out what my point was, which..just for you Doc, I will repeat. I work in the city 3 days a week, and work 2 days in the Long Island office, as well as live on Long Island. So I spend a  fairly even amount of time in both places. I have witnessed far more Islander gear in the city than on Long Island. What that has to do with holding people to a higher standard as a fan I have no idea! Jeez, I don't know where you get this stuff! Perhaps you should try your luck on a debate team!

Don22
Don22

@erika @Don22 @tpjm Yes.  And I will take comment as that as you did not realize I was not talking about you and leave it at that.

Don22
Don22

@orange2327 OK.  But my point really wasn't about Wang or Bettman.  My point is that the Isles didn't move to Brooklyn because of Brooklyn.   They moved there because there was a new arena.  The lure was the new arena, not the neighborhood of Brooklyn.  TPJM seems to think the Islanders decided to move to Brooklyn and THEN they build an arena there for them.   It's not like there was a lot of options, but the selling point for the move wasn't the boro of Brooklyn.

doc942
doc942

@erika @doc942 Another thing Erika, it's idiotic (your own word) that you are surprised that in a capitalistic society that a bar owner on a Saturday night for game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals, has his waiters and staff cheering for or wearing Ranger gear.  How shocking!  They are creating an environment for Ranger fans to come to the bar, enjoy a few beers and eat some food.  Did you think he/she would be promoting the Islanders draft party or something?
