Countdown: 14, Bob Bourne

bourneAt 14 in our countdown is another Dynasty Islander and an Islanders Hall of Famer. Bob Bourne played 12 seasons for the Islanders from 1974-75 through 1985-86. He would finish with three thirty-goal seasons and six twenty-goal seasons in his career. He wasn’t one of the legendary Hall of Famers that the roster was littered with, but he was an important ingredient to the Cup teams nonetheless. He racked up a lot of points over the years too, as Bourne stands at 7th on the team’s all time goal scoring list and 8th in points.

Reader Steve S, who witnessed 7:11 of overtime in person and thus knows a bit more than I on the subject shared his thoughts on Bourne:

Bourne was our era’s Michael Grabner – the fastest guy around, always suddenly breaking away but too often failing to convert. But nothing particular stands out except of course his end-to-end goal in 1983

And that he did occasionally play on the left wing with Trottier and Bossy if Arbour felt that Gillies’s toughness wasn’t needed at a particular time – he was the third forward on the ice when Trottier scored the overtime winner in MSG in game 3 of the 1982 Patrick Final, a clip that is great to watch not just because the Islanders win in OT at MSG, but for the wondrous sight of Ron Duguay’s hair.

Here’s probably the best tribute to Bourne, from his Isles HOF ceremony in 2006:
