First Trade of Many? Regin, Bouchard Sent Packing for Pick

Kevin Schultz

The Islanders have traded Peter Regin and Pierre Marc Bouchard to the Chicago Blackhawks for a 4th Round Pick in this year’s draft. Two free agent busts that were signed over the summer are sent packing in what could be the first of multiple trades for the Islanders over the coming weeks.

ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the Islanders are retaining half of both Regin and Bouchard’s remaining cap hits in the deal.

Bouchard, who was sent through waivers to Bridgeport on December 10, had 9 points in 29 games for the Islanders. In Bridgeport, he tallied 17 points in 20 games.

Regin had seven points and was a -10 in 44 games this season.

Both players had been signed to one-year deals during the off-season.

this team is a mess. snow took over a team 8 years ago that was playoff caliber. he has proceeded to destroy this team by trading away numerous picks for temporary employees and by drafting terribly. this team is now a laughingstock. they are passive, defenseless, and boring to watch. on top of this snow has managed to give away his top two picks which both figure to be very high picks possibly the first two in each of the first two rounds.

Snow will probably take a 5 foot 3 inch Russian with the pick who will sign with the KHL, then they will use the remaining picks for guys from the same team so they can save on the scouting costs and talk about how they are really high on these guys

That's a good start in pruning the dead wood, I hope Snowballs can flip Colon (-18) McDonald for a used jockstrap.

4th line Pick, yet Garth had Bouchard penciled in on the first line at the beginning of the season. No more 4th line scrubs to play with JT...experiments over! And please do not hand me any BS on how the great Snow got Vanek...that was another extremely miscalculated move because it was a) not what we needed, and b) the timing was ludicrous! Everyone and their mother knew that Vanek wanted to be a FA, he came out and said so time and time again. So what does Garth do? He offers him the same contract he has now.....WOW, that will make him stay....DUH!!!! For the record, he is not worth the years...the money, I don't care about. Garth is now pressured to trade him today, or risk having him be hurt in the Olympics. Nice corner to back yourself into! I will be holding my breath and hoping Snow can somehow pull this off. If you guys don't hear from me, I died holding my breath!

Considering PMB cleared waivers and I think its safe to assume Regin would've as well amazing we got anything. IMO this is a move to clear up roster spots for other players we might get.

Please wake me up when Snow get's fired... In any other market... The GM would be toast after such a poor off season of talent procurement and 7 out of 8 years of inability to be a playoff team.

Not asking for much... Just be Professional and stop accepting losing... How do you change the loosing culture you ask??? It starts from the TOP!!!!

Did we have to include any sticks or pucks in trade. If not it was a good deal for the Isles!!!

Tavares looks like he could eat a stick, he's so frustrated. He recognizes that the season has crashed and burned, and that Capuano is an awful coach who appears to be losing his audience as the season falls apart. Snow's future could rest on what he does in deals for AMac and Vanek; whiff on these and he has to go. Cappy is a great guy to have a beer with; as an NHL coach, he's a decent AH:L coach who has his job because he's cheap to hire. Loss to Flames, who mailed in the first 35 minutes, is embarrassing. Dealing Regin and PMB means that Snow flushed his two big offseason moves; he basically is spending $500K to buy a late fourth-round pick.

It will be interesting to see how fans react after Olympics. Exhibition BB starts just as Isles return home; college hoops hits tourney time not long after. Isles have games Thurs-Sat-Sun after play resumes, then go to Western Canada for 10 days. No games with Rangers after break, none with Pens or Flyers. Isles will be trying to sell crappy team playing games against non-rivals while Rangers drive to playoffs, baseball gets starts, college hoops heats up. I don't envy the marketing people.

Has anyone noticed how un-fan-friendly Tavares is? I've just recently noticed he never shakes hands in or out of the tunnel. Seems like he never acknowledges the fans. To me it seems like he doesn't want to be here anymore. And now his stats are showing. Bad passes, more takeaways, complaining and anger. He is always so serious during interviews. I think he is counting the days till he can get out of here and sign with Toronto.

The worst off season move was still resigning Bailey I'm tired of watching him skate in circles whenever he doesn't have the puck. When he does have he just losses it along the boards anyways!

Ditching these two is no big deal.  They both had an upside when they were signed.  They both didn't perform.  Garth is right to get rid of them and free up cap space, hopefully to sign some big names this off season.

We'll see...

In other news, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Peter Regin each score a hat trick in their Blackhawks debuts.

Team is complete garbage!! Has no concept of so many things!! Right after tying the game up they stop skating and the flames take over the game!! Winning goal may have been interference but we've seen that too often our dmen get rammed into down low and pow the puck is in the net!! And can somebody please tell me why this teams PP is worse with viz than it was without him?? And sorry folks I'm supremely ticked at JT!! I know the vanek situation is crazy and all but wtf is this guy doing on the PP???? Terrible decisions!!! My god people have bailey playing with JT/KO next year!! Are u kidding??? And these dmen who we keep hearing about!! Think they are gonna thrive in this losing atmosphere?? And Cappy?? And weight?? Our potential next coach?? What a nightmare!!

On a serious note, one thing that would NOT be good is for the hockey ops. To sell off everything.

Just because this team is constructed like caca diesn't mean it is talentless.

Obviously, Tavares, as long as he can stay afloat with Wang running things, is the superstar of the team.

Hamonic, Okposo, Nelson, DeHaan, (the much maligned 2nd line dman, who is trying to get 1st line $$, AMac), Neilsen, Cizikas are all competent hockey players, some of which can be excellent from time.

Matt Martin is a good fourth line guy. Nothing wrong with having him on any team.

To a lesser extent, B. Strait is an adequate NHL 3rd line pairing dman and C.MacDonald could be an adequate third or fourth line, winger.

Even Poulin, Nilsson, or Koskinen (if he ever plays for the Wanglanders) could become serviceable goalies.

So no one denies there is some talent that has passed through and will continue to in the ensuing years.

Problem is 25 out of the 30 teams can say the same thing, and NONE if them have been as crappy for as long as this team.

The fans of this org. need to get inti a mindset of demanding of this regime that they actually add salary to be at least in the middle of the pack of the 30 teams.

They could actually not dumpster dive over the summer and obtain a #1 goaltender, as the needed to last offseason AND DIDN'T (something they will likely be paying for for years)

They need to add 2 maybe 3 QUALITY, COMPETENT defensemen with some jam and size from outside the organization.

Then, if there is money still left, they can look to see how they could add to the group of forwards they will have, which without Moulson or Vanek (and Parenteau.....Boyes....but who's keeping score?) will be a lot weaker.

But what you're likely to get is another circling of the wagons, trading away wildly, then more dumpster diving. And another lousy team in 2015!

The Hawks are readying themselves for a long playoff campaign by adding depth.  I remember when the Torrey/Arbour Isles were run that way - and the Isles were the best organization in professional sports from 1975-1985.  Seems like a lifetime ago.  Now the Islanders are scoured by confident Cup contenders.  Watch PMB and Regin get their names etched on the Stanley cup, then watch Snow waste another 4th round draft pick.

yup more trades to come.the circus begins eh.

When you are such an embarrassing organization that free agents don't want to sign with you or stay with you, you (unfortunately) have to build slow and steady from within... This is why it still pisses me off to no end that we traded a (6'2 - 200lbs - 5th overall Power-Forward) for Clutterbuck.... You can not easily recover from these poor decisions... DO YOU KNOW HOW BAD THE ISLANDERS HAD TO BE TO END UP WITH A 5TH OVER-ALL PICK ???? And then trade him for another teams waste !!!! This is unacceptable behavior by an organization .... We pay and watch and cheer an entire season for a pathetic team that ends up with the 5th over-all pick and he gets traded for Clutterbuck ???? You can't recover from moves like this....

Please take a look at our secondary scoring !!! You have to LOOK VERY HARD TO FIND IT !!!!! And there isn't a lot of help in Bridgeport.....

Wow Garth looking to send the team a message, trades to guys that aren't even in the lineup. How about trade Bailey! Fire the Coach! That's a message

@Don Smythe  I will tell you whats going to happen, they will go on enough of a winning streak to not get the first overall pick and finish 6th or 7th and draft a sleeper that will never be good-happens every year

Simply untrue. My son went over to the tunnel before a game and not only did he high five every one lined up there but he also thanked them all for their support. Maybe he skipped you because you are a douch

@Bradley in hindsight possibly, but now its to late to cry over spilt milk. I have a good feeling GS will package him and move him. I think he has an enormous upside, simply not with the NYI. Bailey may have played his way off the Island, in that case, god for him and I wish this hidden gem a great career.

@John Raco @Bradley  yeah guess your right maybe a little late but it would be nice to see the guy try and give some effort i thought for sure after last season he was gonna come out this year on fire but i guess this has been a year of disappointments all around for islanders fans. very frustrating after awhile.

He IS a first line player, though.

Nevermind, and to redirect back to the poster's original point, that Garf in his fraudulent rebuild just finished a trade in which he traded away a 30 goal scorer, a first and a second rd. pick for an unknown quantity.

That should NEVER, EVER, EVER HAPPEN!!!
