Game Day (46): Islanders at Avalanche, 9pm

The Least You Should Know About the Avalanche… Colorado is another good Western Conference team, 11 above traditional .500… Matt Duchene has 38 points in 40 games but is still no Tavares… First Overall pick Nathan MacKinnon has 28 points in 43 games… The Avs have the 4th best team save percentage in the NHL…

Kevin Schultz

Two hot teams meet up tonight in Colorado; the Avs come into tonight’s game having won four of five and the Islanders were good for five of their last six. Not only that, but the Isles recent wins have come over teams out west that are over the normal NHL .500 (Chicago, Minnesota).

Colorado is another such team, 11 games over normal .500. They pack quite an offensive punch up front with Duchene, Landeskog, O’Reilly, Stastny and MacKinnon. However, they are a bit banged up. Coach Patrick Roy confirmed earlier that Ryan O’Reilly will sit tonight. He is day-to-day with a shoulder injury. Ex-Isle PA Parenteau will not play against his old team. Parenteau has been sidelined with a knee injury since December 30th. In net, the Avs will start Semyon Varlamov, who has a nice season for them. In 31 starts, he has a .926 SVP and 2.37 GAA.

For the Islanders, it will be back to Kevin Poulin as Evgeni Nabokov is still on injured reserve and cannot be taken off for at least a few more days. Arthur Staple noted that Nabokov did skate today. Matt Donovan and Colin McDonald will also get back into tonight’s lineup.

Congratulations to long-time Islanders radio announcer Chris King, who will call the next two games on MSG.

Projected Lineup:
Vanek-Tavares-Okposo de Hann-Hamonic Poulin
Bailey-Nielsen-Nelson MacDonald-Hickey Nilsson
Grabner-Strome-Clutterbuck Donovan-Strait
Martin-Cizikas-McDonald
Scratches: Boulton, Regin, Carkner IR: Visnovsky, Martinek, Nabokov

After Grabner scored the winner, I would have told Bailey to get out of here, you don't deserve to celebrate, for all the figure skating you do, and never contributing  anything to the team.

I'll wait for the replay but it looks like a bs call. I am a homer after all.

I tell ya what: this is the best I've seen the Isles look all year (I can't lie and say I've watched every game). Even if they lose 1-0 in a shootout, if they play like this every game, they may actually have a shot.

It's possible I'm wearing scotch/beer goggles, but I don't think so. They're playing solid hockey in all 3 zones and 60 actually looks like he was supposed to, when he was drafted.

Rick Nash score late for the Rags, they beat the Stars 3-2 in regulation. Boooo

Rags have a ton of lettuce wrapped up in Nash and Richards, with as usual, little performance for the buck.

Gotta get 2 tonight.

@jepliberty bailey looked fine tonight... made some nice plays that werent capitalized on and play solid defensively.

@orange2327 a decent defense helps out any goaltender. look at the way the d has played since straits return and dehanns debut. big big help.

@Joey Ferguson thought he was solid too, insightful, but didn't try and say too much. no complaints here!

@shlo 1st line has seemed kind of gassed at times during the game. Not playing poorly though.

He is a figure skater.

Meh. Not scoreboard watching. I'll ask this, though....where was that kind of defensive effort that I just saw in the months of November and December?

He is ok. Don't mind it at all.

Perhaps, As I didn't watch the entire game, but a one  good game doesn't make up for, nor forgive him for all the other games he floats around doing nothing, and looking disinterested.

That save he made on that Strome giveaway probably saved the night for them.

@Joey Ferguson@orange2327

Exactly, it also contributed to the Devils Brodeur winning so many games, they had a good D corp and remember the TRAP system they played so well, albeit so boring also.

A well paid one at that

It's a tale of a schizophrenic team.

I'm shocked I'm saying it, but I wish he'd just take over for Howie, now. Would Howie go back to radio? Have I already had too much scotch?

@jepliberty @Joey Ferguson he had a 4 game point streak going. he has been making some nice plays the last 6-8 games. not saying it makes up for the rest of the season but no reason to bash the guy so hard of late
