Tonight at the Coliseum the Islanders have a chance to potentially end the season of one of their division rivals. The Flyers come into the game five points behind the eighth place Islanders with ten games to go. That’s pretty insurmountable as it is, but seven points back with nine games to go would just about do it for the Flyers. That should be an extra sweet result for the Islanders, who have really struggled against the Flyers over the last few years.
For Philadelphia, they’re actually 4-1-0 in their last five with wins over Montreal, Toronto, New Jersey and Pittsburgh. They’ve been playing well, but they’re still pretty far down in the standings.
Remember tonight’s game has a charitable endeavor going on. If you’re still looking for tickets it’s a good cause but you can’t buy them at the box office tonight, as far as I know.
The Islanders are only 12 points away from 54 points, which for playoff possibilities should be a good point total to finish with. They’ll need to go a bit above .500 from here on out. They don’t have the easiest remaining strength of schedule anymore — that belongs to the Rangers — but the Isles are still fourth in that category.
We’ll update this post with lineups and starting netminders as they become available.
ALSO: A note about the comments. There have been a lot of personal attacks lately. Those have never been tolerated but we’ve been a bit too lenient. Starting today we’ll be monitoring things more closely and editing comments as a warning. If those warnings aren’t heeded, we’ll take further measures. Disagreement and debate is allowed and encouraged, but please do it in a civil manner. No name calling, no debating the merits of someone’s fandom, no racism. No personal attacks of any kind. Hopefully we can all relax, enjoy the blog and the playoff race.
