It’s sort of becoming commonplace now. Isles get behind early, usually by two goals. And then they find a way to come all the way back and win it, many times in regulation. This was one a bit bigger, a bit more important, than some of the others because it was over the Rangers at the Garden. In regulation. Over a hot Ranger team.

It was an eventful first period and the Islanders tried 2-1 after the first frame including a 2-0 hole early on. The first goal was Rick Nash left alone in the slot and an audible PING as he clanked the puck perfectly off the iron. Nash would add another soon after with a breakaway goal hanging out by the Islanders blueline… Behind two Islanders defenders. It was an up-and-down game with a lot of chances like these for both teams (OK, fast break chances not 1-on-0 chances), and the Rangers cashed them in early on.

But the Islanders did like they’ve done lately and brought themselves all the way back. And, to be quite honest, they played pretty well over the first two periods, which is a bit different than recent deficit games.

Later in the first, Matt Martin took a feed in front of the net and put it top shelf like a goal scorer. It was his best Thomas Vanek impression, even taking the pass from John Tavares. And that was another story of the night; the Islanders first line setting up non-first line forward for beautiful goals.

The next Islanders goal, down 3-1 mid-second period, was a tic-tac-toe from Vanek to Okposo to Thomas Hickey in front of the net. A few minutes later Colin McDonald would find himself in the slot with a rebound that came off a Tavares shot and buried it past the Rangers’ Cam Talbot.

The game headed to the third tied and you knew it would be a good one. Both teams had their chances — especially the Rangers late — but it was a costly mistake from the Rangers bench that tilted the scales. The Rangers took a too many men penalty with about five minutes to go and that would be the difference. The Isles power play, which wasn’t good for much of the night, made a beautiful play to give the team the lead.

Frans Nielsen, at the point, threw a quick pass to John Tavares in the slot who merely deflected it to the front of the net. At that point, Thomas Vanek cut across and easily put it passed the outstretched netminder. On the broadcast, Butch Goring called it a set play and I’d have to believe that, it all worked out so well.

The rest of the way the Rangers held serve for the most part, keeping the puck in the Islanders zone. Kevin Poulin, who made 30 stops on the night, came up big when it mattered most and had some great saves down the stretch. In the end, Dan Girardi would fumble a puck at the blueline and that let Frans Nielsen carry it the length of the ice for the empty netter with less than 10 ticks to go.

Tavares, Vanek and Okposo tallied only one goal on the night but they set up all four of the Islanders non-empty net goals and combined for seven points. Even when they’re not setting each other up, they’re contributing heavily to the Islanders offense. Tonight, the other guys they set up finished the puck quite well. The trio is now 2nd, 7th and 21st in the NHL in points. The only other teams with a trio that high up in the points race are Pittsburgh and San Jose. They are, clearly, elite. Now they need the rest of the team to continue playing well around them.

With a win in Los Angeles, the Blue Jackets kept pace with the Islanders. The Isles are still five points out in the East but are 2-1 in this current stretch of four straight Metro division games. They host Pittsburgh at the Coliseum on Thursday. That game will be a 7:30pm start, as it is on national TV.

I noticed Joe Micheletti  giving props to Calvin De haan, saying He looks real good  .The kid has played one bad game an has been outstanding in the rest, nobody in this league moves a puck up the ice faster then Calvin Dehaan! One crisp pass to J.T and off we go .Big difference from two years ago when we had Jurcina,Staois Etc.Now we have a bunch of De men that can move the puck!

Bubba is very, very, very happy today.

Some questions...

1. Wasn't Regin's nifty pass to JT worth mentioning somewhere? Good depth signing, that Regin.

2. Wasn't Vanek's cross ice pass to KO as impressive as KO's pass to Hickey?

3. After letting Nash get away from him for the first goal, didn't Vanek play like a 7M+/year player? (Including a nice back check on Nash)

4. Should Bailey and Hickey switch positions? :)

5. Isn't this win all the more impressive without Hamonic? Think about that for a moment!

6. Wasn't it nice to see composure, from the head coach on down, before, during and after the game?

I don't care how, what or why...they won, and it was AWESOME!!!!

I am however sickened by that other rag, Newsday. So looking forward to reading about how the Isles outplayed the Rags, and maybe even use it as ammunition for some Raggie fans at work. NO back page mention: No mention of the score at all! Saw plenty of reporters there, and it's not like the game went to a shootout, so to use SNOW(not Garth) as an excuse for their super-bias is ridiculous! How can it even be allowed to happen that the Isles biggest rivals own our cable network and our hometown newspaper? No one in the Islander organization thought of protesting? There has to be some law against this scenario which has resulted in numerous biased situations. How come we have to pay the Rags because we play within a certain amount of miles from them, yet they move to our hometown and take over virtually ALL media coverage of us and don't owe us a dime? BOGUS!!!!

Also, to one or 2 of my friends on the board that I was arguing with the other day about Vanek's defensive play. I actually saw two good defensive plays from him yesterday (even though one was because of his own givaway), so I am actually very happy with his play and the whole first line. It seems to be really gelling, and I love it!

WE BEAT THE RAGGIES!!!!! So happy right now! Our goaltending is erratic, but the team has been playing well! GO ISLANDERS!! .

The sun is shining brighter and there is a bounce in my step after we beat those MF'ing rump Raingez. Great win boys , keep it up!

Am I the only one that is noticing how much more effective our team and system for that matter is when the D is pinching? I feel its why we are actually better at coming from behind as opposed to holding a lead. This system is all about staying aggressive and once we stop doing that the system fails. We need to keep the pressure on with smartly timed pinches no matter the score or time of the game. As I heard a fan shout the last game I was, Donovon ACTIVATE!!

Ok this is great what a fun last few games. Team Is hotter than a firecracker. There a fun team to watch. Just Beat the scary rangers. Played them into the ice to be honest. Pitt game will be awesome to watch. And yes the negative comments are laughable to say the least. When we make the playoffs all of you can say sorry. What does cutting the isles do? It's just pathetic. Are they perfect no! And I don't want them to be. I would rather cheer for a team like the isles than Pitt because it's always a challenge. And I like challenge. They keep you on the edge at all times. We are so lucky to have a young fast team like this to watch. Go isles go!!!!

Wow, people are really going to make jokes about other people on the site skiing into trees and sexual innuendoes about them with Wang and Snow? We're all Islanders fans here. How bout just talking about the team/game, instead of just putting others down or making fun of them? And this goes for both sides of the "negative" and "positive" posters here.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but it looks like Vanek might take a similar approach to Carmelo Anthony of the Knicks. I'm not liking the look of things. It wouldn't surprise me if Vanek walks at the end of the season. As people are saying I don't know if he is happy here on LI. Please stay Vanek!

I can't take this place. We lose...complaints. we win...complaints. Demand a trade...gets done...now have the second hottest line in the league. ..complaints. Is anyone ever happy here? MY complaint is the unhappy, never satisfied people in this blog. WE WON! WE BEAT THE RAGS IN MSG!!! I AM ECSTATIC! !!!!! SIEZE THE MOMENT. ENJOY IT. AT THIS MOMENT WE ARE PPL LAYING BETTER THAN LAST YEAR. All you people who expect failure are never satisfied and aren't happy until they can say I told you so. To all those people (and you know who you are) I say phhhhhrrrrrttttttzzzz!!!

(That was the good old Bronx cheer)

@truth77 He has really made a huge difference and I am glad.  I was have been certain he was toast but give him credit, he is slick on his skates, has been physical and moves the puck.  Also Donovan (yes I bashed him pretty bad - so I eat crow) he playing well.  Here is the thing, you get back Hamonic and Viz, Trade Amac?

de Hann - Hamonic

Viz - Hickey

Donovan (Carkner) - Strait

Come next year if Reinhart is in and you have Pullock - nice problem

@bubbamac19  Good points.  Technically on the first goal JT came down low to cover the slot and did not look around, while Vanek probably should have followed Nash down the slot, his position was the oncoming point man from the Rags.....blown coverage but like you said he so made it up.

Don22
Don22

@bubbamac19 Regin doesn't kill this team when he plays, and the days of him starting over Donovan are gone.  Also, Vanek did make a nice pass to KO and made up for his turnover with some wheels.  Butch did mention it on the telecast.  Funny quip about Bailey/Hickey...or is it??  ;-)

Definitely a nice win for a team that can find themselves running around when being pressured.  They held up at the end.

Lol. Its not just here or this team. You look at other sites for other teams and its a lot of the same stuff. Even a team like Pitt that is run very well has people on both sides saying what they should or shouldn't be doing. One thing can't be denied, there is a lot of passion on here.

gleichzahl

@ohiofan and vanek made it look absolutely easy.  tie game, third period, against the rangers at msg, and he makes it look like taking candy from a baby.  what a nice way to send them home.  thanks for playing.  :)

Don22
Don22

@mitchfritz I think right now we need to not worry about the playoffs.  It's important for this team to continue to progress.   This team is still growing.  deHaan and Donovan are learning to play well together.  There was an oncoming rush against the Rangers and both of them were directing the forwards on who to cover and it worked out great.  That was a nice thing to see.  Although I hope to see the playoffs, as long as they can stay in the hunt and continue to play well and progress it will be ok.  Not saying I would be satisfied, but considering the hole they dug themselves, at this point they just need to keep getting better and stay consistent.

@Zach14 What gives you that impression?  He's moved his family to Long Island.  He has stated he is enjoying playing here.  He's on a team with a lot of young talent and a new arena soon.  He's playing with JT.  Of course it may come down to money, but your post doesn't make much sense.

@rmreturns Next 3 games loom large. Literally and "physically". Pens, Blues, Bruins. If they get 4 points out of that, I'd have to say I'd be happy - especially without Hamonic.

@rmreturns that's a load of crap.  'if poulin makes one save' is an idiotic way to count points.  he is what he is.  it's not the last softie he'll ever give up.

@ibethr4u I think the better part of the last 25 years being as brutal as they have been has bred a culture of complaining.

@cournoyer Be Happy...at least that friggin toolbox Dan Blysma want get a chance to ruin the beast KO has become!! Just sayin...there is  a bright side to the big snub.  He cant get hurt in the Olympics if he's not playing in them!  And he doesn't have to worry about getting blown the funk up by some religious fanatic!! So there is that too....

Don22

@mitchfritz I have to say - out of all 3 local papers, Newsday does have the most coverage of the Isles.  With the Post and Daily News, they are lucky to get mention in the AP section.

erika

@mitchfritzI know there was a snowstorm, mitch, but believe me there has been bias ever since the Dolans took control of just about all Long Island Media Sources! Last time these 2 teams met during a snowstorm, the results were waiting for me at 7 am....of course, the Rags won that one!

@Jim Miller@Zach14We all hope he stays. He'll never play with a better center than Tavares. If any California team or Chicago comes calling in, he'll move.

As of today he'll only sign the old fashion way- give him an offer he can't refuse.

If LeBrun is right "at the end of the day he'll go to free agency" all the "we must" is worth nothing.

Don22

@Scott Weinstein @ibethr4u I don't know about that Scott.  It seems it has gotten more brutal this year.  There are definitely 2 sides of the fence here and there are some on both sides that tend to get out of hand.  There are those that I battle with like, DK, Orange and Chris R - but for the most part, we are able to keep it civil.  Some jabs are a little harder at times, but usually civil.  Then there are a few others on BOTH sides that I won't mention that tend to get out of hand.

ibethr4u

@isles23 Although they have had their share of rookie mistakes, I like how deHaan and Donovan have been playing.  It would be nice if they can keep progressing together.  Just think, in a couple of years they could actually be our 2nd/3rd pair.  Dare to dream, I suppose.

dkdk

There has been plenty of time for an offer he can't refuse. If it hasn't been put in front of him yet I doubt it will. And if he gets multiple comparable offers, I don't think it is likely he stays. I want him to, but I see it as an uphill fight.

@shlo @Jim Miller @Zach14 All good points.  The California and Chicago teams, along with Minnesota, cannot come calling until July 1st.  The Isles will make him an offer that he can't refuse.  He will never see free agency IMHO.

@Zee Executioner

He's a "fan" the way Botta was a fan: meaning he cashes Chuck's paycheck.

Botta, if you remember, started this blog-site as a public relations tool to promote passage of the Lighthouse project; Chuck had previously unceremoniously dumped Botta as head of Team PR in favor of hiring his (Chuck's) son-in-law; after which, Chuck then funded this Site...

The relationship between Botta and Wang frayed further after the LH project was defeated, and Chris began displaying a modicum of journalistic integrity, as opposed to his former role as mouthpiece and spin-merchant for Chuck's sordid empire...

That newfound integrity, along with Botta's published critiques, didn't sit too well with the criminal fraud, so he pulled Botta's press credentials and banned him from  player interviews at the Coliseum.

Moral of the story: Chuck pays people to monitor this Board, and every other Internet site, and respond to any factual criticism with fabrication, misrepresentation, distortion and outright lies.
