Islanders ‘Pleased’ with Sundstrom’s Debut

Christian Arnold, Islanders Point Blank:

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Friday night’s 4-3 loss to San Jose Sharks was not the storybook debut for Rookie Johan Sundstrom, but it was a relatively  successful one for the 21-year-old.

In his first NHL game, Sundstrom saw 10:28 of playing time and recorded one shot on goal. He also played alongside Bridgeport teammate Mike Halmo and Casey Cizikas.

Islander Coach Jack Capuano believed the Swedish forward was nervous, but played well in his NHL debut.

“I thought that he competed,” Capuano said. “I’m sure he learned the first couple of shifts that you gotta get pucks in and that these guys are tracking hard. It’s a quicker game, but I thought against the team that he played he did absolutely fine. I was pleased by his game.”

Prior to Friday’s meeting with the Sharks, Sundstrom said he was excited for his first game with the Islanders.

“This is why you work so hard everyday,” he said. “Now the opportunity is here, so I’m just happy to be here.”

Sundstrom was called up from AHL Bridgeport on Thursday to replace the injured Michael Grabner. In 38 games this season for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers he has recorded seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points. Sundstrom is also one of nine rookies currently on the Islanders roster and has already played with some of the guys  in the Isles locker room.

“I know a few guys here and Anders the goalie is also a Swedish guy,” he said. “Besides [at] camp they’ve all been very nice. Especially Frans Nielsen, who’s a Danish guy, taking care of me.”

With his first game in the books, Sundstrom will get another chance to make his mark Saturday night against the Sabres. But in his first game in the NHL  his teammates were impressed by his performance.

“[Sundstrom] had a great game for it being his first time,” said Anders Lee. “It’s not easy, there’s a lot of nerves. A lot of extra thoughts going through your head, but I thought he handled it real well.”

I wish we had George Steinbrenner as an owner and Lou Lamoriello as our GM.... But I am a realist and understand that Wang & Snow are not going anywhere.... It might help some of you all to except this as well. Seventeen drunk fans chanting outside the Coliseum isn't going to change this. Wang is about to take this club to a state of the art Arena with a piece of the concessions, (which he doesn't have in Long Island).... I'm not crazy about Snow, but I have enough faith to know that this former NHL Goalie understands the importance of an NHL Goalie and the fact that this club does NOT currently have one. So I'll post this prediction again. If Snow brings an NHL Goalie to this club in the off-season, we will be a playoff team again....

As well Lee an deHaan has played has to make you question coaching and management yet again. They were clearly ready and should have got a shot a lot earlier than they did, esp deHaan.

Anyone from here going to the protest/game tonight?  I paid $7 for a stubhub ticket last night and not one chant at all throughout the night.  All just families and dates and little kids.

Let's face it.  Without their 2 top scorers and Grabner out, wins are going to be hard to come by for the remainder of the season.  There's no sense in lamenting in another lose. Instead, let's try to focus on how the young guys are playing and hope they are learning and developing enough to stick around.  I know we would all rather be rooting for a franchise goalie or a top defensive pairing, but it is what it is right now.

isles "pleased" w/ "Battle Level" in yet another loss.Isles fans "pleased" watching another batch of hyped prospects.The wheel keeps turning & burning.Lee does look good so far but still hasn't garnered extra attention by opposing teams yet.That will be the real test.The first step will be to test his toughness.That will prob happen next year as Isles have no games left w/ any meaning so teams will just go through the motions like SJ did & still come out the winner.Another wave of prospects that will be penciled into roster spots based on need not performance.Matt Martin needs to drop about 20lbs & become a more responsible player.He's one dimensional & clearly a liability on the ice.The one offseason improvement HAS to be goaltending.Improvement being the key word not another body.Maybe this will be the year of drafting all goalies.

It's great to see Okposo continue to gain points without Tavares on the ice. At 25 years old, (it's a positive take away from an awful season). We now have another legitimate 1st line forward.

The Lee story is GREAT !!!! It hopefully shows management that Large Bodies with a little bit of scoring skill is typically superior to a smaller framed, skilled guy..... I'm just saying....

This Team DESPERATELY NEEDS an NHL GOALIE !!!

IF WE GET AN NHL GOALIE this off season, we will be a play-off team, next year.... My Prediction....

I didn't notice Sundstrom until I made an effort to midway through the third. First game, what can you expect.  Give him time and a chanceBut Anders Lee....that's a kid I like.

Agreed u are not helping strome by sticking him with fourth liners that is how they messed with nino. Would like to keep lee with strome but he earned the right to be on first line. Def need to draft another big winger with skill to round out the top nine fowards.

i didnt like that he was on the 4th line... 4th line should be halmo cizikas and martin. 3rd line sundstrom strome and mcdonald... i would say lee but he has been playing well on the 1st line....

@njersey  Is Lee the real deal is the question for sure.  You hope he continues to stay hot and then because ultra confident.  But in the end they have to cover their back end for next year.  A young D corp with their possible best players still going to be rookies or too young and no goalie yet.  The scoring will come

@njersey 13 goalies changing addresses this year......we did not get one of them, yet we had arguably the biggest chip at the trade deadline. Who exactly do you think this crew will magically entice to play here?

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@njersey

I really don't wish to stick a pin in your prediction but,,, I think that the fact that Nabokov continues to play over Nilsson or Poulin when the season is toast is a telling sign of things to come.  I fear he will once again be the number one next year, as a contract will be offered and accepted.  What else is there to contemplate when the trade deadline came and went and nary a line was written about him even being offered around the league when at least seven goal tenders were moved.  Snow wants him here.  Add to that the fact that Carkner, Hickey, Strait and Visnovsky all need to be replaced with an upgrade but are signed for another season and,,, my prediction is more wheel spinning next year, too...

Joey Ferguson
Joey Ferguson

@David Sisler  he was much more noticable then bailey the entire game. and after the first he stepped it up. for his first game i was pretty impressed. skated better then i thought he was going to. a little bigger then i thought.

Don22
Don22

@Brandon Hillman I get what you are saying - but let's face it, there really is no 1st, 2nd or 3rd lines.  At this point I think you mix and match and see what sticks.

And enough with Nino.  He isn't exactly lighting it up with MN and he has been dropped to the 3rd line.  Is he whining there yet?

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@Joey Ferguson

Let's make this assumption,,, Anders Lee is making a strong case to be the left wing with Tavares and Okposo next year.  You know,,, the spot that was held by a thirty goal scorer that the GM traded for another thirty goal scorer and tossed in two high draft picks to sweeten the deal only to have that new thirty goal scorer say he was going into free agency which forced another trade.  Okay,,, Lee wins the spot,,, problem solved???  Not even close, that puts Grabner, Nielsen and Clutterbuck back into their more suited role as a checking third line but, it also opens up a lot of questions about just who forms that second line.  Without another deal, and what really are the odds that this GM can bring in an impact forward for that second line, it will be comprised of the following,,, Bailey, Nelson, Strome and McDonald.  Perhaps there is an upgrade in the system.  Perhaps Sebastian Collberg arrives from Sweden and astounds us all...

I didn't mean to come off sarcastic but, watching this team gets awfully frustrating.  Go ahead and say it,,, don't watch...  I can't help it it,,, I'm a fan.  Until the owner starts to care about the product on the ice and not just the bottom line in the accounting sheet,,, until there's an accountability from the GM's office to get it right,,, we are screwed...

Don22
Don22

@mitchfritz @Peter ZumpanoI agree with Lee, although I think he looked a little out of place last year in his limited time playing.  deHaan has come off shoulder injuries and needed some time to get back into things.

@Jason Zimmermann @Don22Jason - you keep doing what you are doing.  You can choose to let the team make you miserable.  That's fine with me.  I choose to try and find something good to take out of each game.  No crime in that.

@dzruggie Is optimism a bad thing? I know we suck, we sucked for a while , a lonnnnnng while. No need for depression here. You'll live longer, maybe long enough to see another cup.

Don22
Don22

@dzruggie @Don22LOL.  There are positives.  You just need to squint your eyes really hard to find them.

You know where I'm coming from.  I went to the game last night knowing the outcome was pretty much set.  I was hoping to see a few bright spots, which we did and have some fun with my wife, which I did.  I live with this team.  I don't necessarily die with it anymore.  By that I just mean that right now, it is what it is and I'm not going to start kicking the dog because the lost.

dinbigd
dinbigd

@Jason Zimmermann @dinbigd Oh I agree 100% w/ what you are saying.This was meant for the fans pounding their chests over yet another wave of prospects & exaggerating some players performances.It has been proven you cannot win w/ a roster full of kids yet Isles seem to be content in doing so.Do they really think when the games start to count next year(Dec/Jan/Feb)this current team will hold up?Not a chance.Time for new ownership which is not happening anytime soon.Any fan w/ some sense about the game of hockey could easily see in the SJ game that SJ was toying w/ the Isles.When they needed to dominate they did.It was like they knew there was no way the Isles were going to beat them.Now they are a well coached team.They didn't even break a sweat.

@REDSpointofview @njersey

No Worries Red - (my prediction was a little provocative,I know, but I really do believe it).... I will bet the ranch, (just from hearing a former NHL goalie's comments, (Snow) and knowing that he did make efforts to get a goalie last off season and during this season), this team WILL have a "different" goal tender next season... (Nabby and Poulin will NOT be back)... And IF that goalie is NHL Quality, we will be a VERY MUCH improved hockey club.... I am very confident !!!

njersey

@REDSpointofview @Joey Ferguson

I know free-agents hate to consider this pathetic hockey organization - BUT, If we can throw a large amount of money at Danny Heatley, (now 33 years old, 6'4", 220lbs - looking for his last contract) and let him know he can get back to his GLORY NUMBERS playing next to Tavares and Okposo.....  I don't know - DO WE HAVE A SHOT AT HIM ?????  We did offer Vanek a Big contract before he left !!!

@Chris R @Don22@dzruggieI paid $0.00 for tickets.  My cousin has season tix and she got snow game tickets.  I don't pay to go to games. And no, there weren't any chants.  The crowd was either supportive of the team or passive.  There were more Sharks fans than I would have thought.

@ejej @tag1 Sorry ej I didn't see your response I was on the other thread before, the updated model has every snow draft pick a future Hall Of Fame player, new SKU #.  Don't worry I can't make it tonight either, I might go Tuesday night but I won't know until around 530 Tues, God I'm going to miss them playing here. Have a good weekend buddy.

@njersey @REDSpointofview So the GM has consistently failed to bring in what the team needs but in his 8+ plus offseason you really are confident hell get something even after reaffirming he is a laughingstock....whatever you are smoking must be good!

@tag1- Morning Tag. Have you created a SKU number for the Crystal Ball? We need to get in on Amazon as you suggested ASAP...

I'm not going to make it up today for the revolt, too many loose ends to tie up down here. I posted to brother dk last week on a thread that I was definitely coming, but no can do.

Not sure if you and dk will attend..hope all is well.

Bad contract - you are right, but if Bailey is third liner next year, (NO HIGHER - PLEASE !!!) we will be fine.

He can contribute to the team with a couple points here and there and hopefully continue to play "responsible" two-way play..... He's a "head-case" in my opinion..... Hard to Fix....

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@shlo @Joey Ferguson

The one good thing coming out of this season ending "play out the string" is the play of Anders Lee.  He has made a strong case for that top line left wing spot with Tavares.  More importantly,,, he has saved us all from seeing Josh Bailey in that spot next year...

Don22
Don22

@shlo @Don22I hope not.  I think he still has something left in the tank, but I don't think he deserves a huge contract at all.  But the way things have gone, he may be one of the few higher profile FAs that actually might come here for money.  Unless he thinks he might still have a chance to win a cup somewhere.

shlo
shlo

@Don22 No way Snow is throwing big numbers at him. I'll give him a Bailey number with performance bonus.

Don22
Don22

@njersey I don't know if I would want him, but it may be a necessity.  The problem is he is a lot like Vanek. Not a great skater and defender and can float.  Fans might turn on him too, although I think a lot of the fan hatred on Vanek stemmed from who he was traded for. I don't know that a lot of teams are high on him so I guess he could consider.  He would definitely be a positive for the team, but  I don't know if I would back up the truck for him.

shlo
shlo

@njersey Isn't he playing on the 4th line now?

but it is interesting, we need to spend money to reach the cap, so maybe.

shlo
shlo

@Chris R  I like Lee ,but it is too early, a new broom sweeps better than an old one...they gave him an opportunity and he grabbed it. If he is the "real thing" and plays well on the 1st I don't care if he is on the cheap as long as he produces. He just may bring more youthful enthusiasm to the 1st line.

I do have a good feeling about him. With JT he will be more productive. He will be better than Nino . No ego issues.

Snow has to spend money to reach the cap. Like everybody says we need a goalie that can give us better than .920 save pct

to make the playoffs and have a future.

Not to mention the D...
