Isles trade for Dan Boyle from San Jose

The Islanders have acquired the rights to defenseman Dan Boyle from the San Jose Sharks.

New York gives up a conditional 2015 fifth-round pick. The pick could become a fourth-round pick if Boyle signs.

Boyle, 37, led all San Jose Sharks defensemen in points (36) and goals (12) in 75 games this past season. The Ottawa native added four assists in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games.

In 954 career regular-season NHL games with the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and San Jose, Boyle has 561 points (144 goals, 417 assists). He ranks No. 46 all-time in scoring among NHL defenseman and is fourth among active defensemen. Boyle has appeared in at least 75 games in nine of the last 10 full NHL seasons.

where does Boyle live? I know he had a home in Florida in 2004. if he still has that home, or a home in FL, the Isles might have more than a good chance at signing him.

sweet! garth offers 2 years 5.5 mil i think it gets done.....  i know he has played well but he will be 38 and who knows how his body will hold up. good move garth now go out there and sign him and dump/trade vis and bailey!

Very good move. Limited risk that gives the Isles almost a month window to exclusively pitch the up and coming team.

If they sign Boyle I think the Isles are a playoff team and that is not including the draft, FA or trades that may add (hopefully not subtract) to the lineup. Their defense was much better over the last 6 weeks but was betrayed by the goaltending. They've got players. Stay healthy and they can make a nice run.

A few weeks ago i said this team needs a minimum of two veteran defenseman a goalie and a top 6 forward, halfway there if Boyle signs. Personally this team still needs to add size, Matt Greene would be a great FA signing July 1st.

And most importantly get rid of this ECHL coaching staff

Bringing in Boyle doesn't make a whole lotta sense unless they plan on cutting ties with Viz. We already have like 8 defensemen under contract for next season and that doesn't even include Griff.

 Not a bad pick up for a 5th round pick. I do wish the guy was 32 or 33 instead of 37. Not a bad mentor for the young defenseman on the islanders too. At least now we can say good bye or trade Visnovsky. He's a big zero.

How's his skating and physical play?

Boyle has always been one of my favorites, so I hope he signs. I am not thinking it will be as easy as halak, but I hope he does. I still think an accomplished guy that has made good money may look to sign with a true cup contender, but my fingers are crossed. I think he has 2-3 years left.

I like it.   The one thing you can say about Garth Snow, when he identifies and targets a player he really wants, he's for better (Halak) or worse (Vanek), is proactive.

Dan Boyle would be ideal for the Isles, he's a productive veteran, who is durable and still skates well, to lead the "Next Generation" of Reinhart, DeHahn, Pokka, Pulock, Mayfield and maybe Pedan.    Plus he has won a Cup (and a Gold Medal), something that no current Islanders have, and that counts big time in the locker room.

Get him signed, trade for Evander Kane and then get Thatcher Demko in the draft

Remember when he own-goaled Nabby in San Jose?

he wont sign...last year in the league n he wants to spend it losing? he'll  takeless to win somewhere. but i do love the fact the cycle still works. when we are young we trade for old guys to help guide the young guys. when we are old we trade for draft picks. all in all we lose.  i

His agent is from the NYC area, Westchester I believe.  I think he has a good shot at signing assuming the dollars make sense.  This would be a HUGE acquisition.

@bubbamac19

They can make  nice run, Yeah in their annual swoon in November, they could do the 26 mile marathon in NYC.

@Vicp73  Matt Greene is to the Kings what Carkner is to the Isles.  We don't need a slow Dman.  Willie Mitchell and a decent winger is what we really need.

Hey Vic .... Nice comeback by LA huh?

@Scott Weinstein  Oh no...not a a problem, wang enrolled Hickey for high school classes next season...he won't be here

@Scott Weinstein I think that Viz is one injury away from retirement, he will not last the season.

@phishstyx1  Power play guy, great skater, good positional, not a big hitter; more like deHaan than Reinhart. He'll be a good leader for the team; think of a bigger, better Viz. Isles need a PP guy who can stay healthy and they desperately need leadership. He fills both voids.

@Jeff Roland He's not Staios.  Glad to see you are still your old wet blanket self.

@Jeff Roland

Boyle is a much better player than Staois or any of the other "fossil" defensemen the team has signed in a long time. The team needs a veteran defenseman since Viz can't be relied upon to even play a game next year. Boyle is a perfect guy for that who can still contribute offensively. I don't understand your problem with this.

Dan Boyle is still 10 times the player at his current age than Staios ever was

@tond24

I think if Snow gives him a 2 yr contract this will not be his last yr.

Don22
Don22

@Sam Sam I don't agree with your analogy, but I would be fine with Mitchell too.  However that would then be 3 defensemen 37 yrs old, assuming they sign Boyle.

I would like to see someone like Orpik come in, but I think if they sign Boyle, that's probably it on defense unfortunately.  Unless they are willing to put some guys on waivers.

@dkdk What's up dk...  I think the Rags are going to get crushed, LA had an off night and still got the win. LA to big to strong imo. It was a great game though

We have to develop our own #1 #2 defensemen. There's 20 other teams looking for those defensemen. It would cost way to much to trade for one. Dion pneuf would be the only one I could think of that would be do able....some argue he's not a 1or2. Not too many #1#2 are available. I think if we can get dept (Boyle)on our blue line than we will be OK...now that have a goalie.

Wangbegone, believe me I get it. But baby steps. Halak and hopefully Boyle are light years better than what we usually get each summer. and maybe these moves are a sign a new owner is on the horizon. Maybe, God willing.

dkdk

I hope so mitch, he would help a lot and I am a huge fan of his. I think he has a lot more options than halak did so that's why I have a little more fear.

@wangbegone Ah, I knew we could count on you to pan the trade.  And you probably complain when we talk about prospects and picks.  Yet you complain when we give up one.

What new owner do you speak of? A direct question was asked to Bettman yesterday about the sale of the New York Islanders and Bettman said Wang isn't sure yet if he wants to sell. It's not a foregone conclusion that he's selling.

Orange, you are better than staios

Don22
Don22

@wangbegone Right.  Because he's not a defenseman that is going to help them win the cup.  He's not going to do that for the Isles either.  He is going to help mentor some of the younger guys and help provide veteran leadership this team sorely needs.

@wangbegone @kevinpt @Jeff Roland you're wrong here.. Travis Hamonic is a young # 1 defensemen.  he did a great job against Pittsburgh in the playoffs AND was a PLUS 2 last year on the WORST defensive team in the league!...

@Don22 @wangbegone

So what you are saying it will be another 3, or 4 years before this team even considers an effort to compete, very interesting.
