When the Islanders played in Winnipeg last week, an 11-year-old Islanders fan attended the game in his John Tavares jersey. When the Isles won the game in overtime, Jets fans began heckling the little Islanders fan.
His mother explained what happened, via the Winnipeg Sun:
“And then there was this man who just sort of bolted out of nowhere and ran right up to him, in his face, and shouted at him,” she said.
I don’t know what kind of person can scream ‘You suck!’ or ‘Go home, loser!’ into an 11-year-old’s face. But I imagine they’d yell similar sentiments at teenaged refs or opposing kids at a youth game.
In tears, Jake scrunched up his Tavares jersey so people wouldn’t see it.
Somehow, Tavares heard about the story and had the Islanders reach out to their young fan.
Tavares sent the kid a new, signed jersey and has invited him to join the team’s morning skate when they return to Winnipeg next season (Leahy, March 13).
