Morning Skate: Barroway Has the Bucks, Nelson, Building Through the Draft

Kevin Schultz

On the SBJ/SBD Podcast a couple days ago, Chris Botta had some updates on the potential sale of the team to Andrew Barroway. You can check it out via this link and the discussion starts at about the 5-minute mark. Here are some of the pertinent points:

“My understanding… is that Andrew Barroway has an agreement, a verbal agreement… an understanding with Charles Wang of what the price will be should he and his partners buy the New York Islanders. I’m told to not be surprised if that price actually exceeds $400 million. Again that’s an agreement, an understanding — not a signed deal.”

“[Barroway] does not have the money yet. He is not in that ballpark of slam dunk wealthiness where he could do this alone, so he is continuing to look for partners… If Charles Wang can get this deal done, he will take it… “

And today, things got a bit more interesting as Barroway, according to Botta, has the money. Now it’s up to Charles to answer the question of [Howie Mandel voice] “deal, or no deal?”

A source close to Barroway said last night that Barroway recently lined up the necessary partners and financing to complete a deal.

“It was no secret that Andy needed partnership money,” said the source. “Now, he’s put it all together and he’s in position to make the deal Wang wants.”

Isles Talk has an article on the Jaroslav Halak situation, in which there has been no obvious movement since the trade, and has an interesting take on why it’s quiet:

First, have you noticed that there are also no signings of any teams restricted free agents? That’s because every GM like Snow are awaiting to see what the official salary cap will be. During Gary’s interview with Garth Snow, there was a estimation of 52 million as the possible cap floor, but the GM’s need specific numbers so that they can decide whether to qualify their restricted free agents and make room for future unrestricted free agents or trades. The cap floor should be announced within the next few weeks, so there is still time.

Brock Nelson had this awesome goal yesterday against Latvia at the World Championships:

Maple Leafs Hot Stove breaks down how teams have acquired their number one center and the vast majority of the teams acquire that person through the draft. 24 of 30 teams have done so via the draft — Islanders included in that, obviously. It goes to show how tough it can be to find a player like that via free agency, only one team has a UFA as their number center, which is the Rangers with Brad Richards. Of course, that has been a rocky road at times and they also have Derek Stepan, who they drafted, waiting in the wings.

The article outlines why and how the Leafs should attempt to trade Florida for the number one pick this summer. The Leafs are in desperate need of a franchise player, one they could likely get at #1 and the Panthers may be more interested in winning now, and could use NHL-ready players that a #1 pick would bring back. But then again everyone says the #1 pick is getting traded every year and it never seems to. So, we’ll see.

Also: GM Ray Shero was fired in Pittsburgh after being eliminated by the Rangers earlier this week… Coach and ex-Isle Dan Byslma remains. For now…

Happy Anniversary, Stanley Cup Number Three:

First of all anything Chris Botta says these days i take with a grain of salt. This guy was saying for years that the Islanders aren't going any where and a new arena will be built on Long Island. Waiting to see what the cap is going to be for 2014-15 season is a really weak answer to why Halak isn't signed yet. It doesn't change the fact that we need a top goaltender for the up coming season. Other then John Tavares every other player on the team plays second fiddle to Halak or another top goaltender getting signed. What worries me is the closer we get to July-1 Halak might just decide to wait to hit free agency.

He should be shaking in his boots if Barroway buys the team - or he's using his time to dig up dirt on the guy instead of running the team

makes PERFECT sense as to why there hasnt been rumblings on the topic of halak.  you cant be offering contracts when you dont know what you have to work with, that would make little sense.  instead, snow shoudl be taking this time to show him the area and get him acquainted.  this way, when its time to make an offer, it can be a quicker process.  still need to get him signed, but this makes sense as to why he isnt.

Boyle, Havlat won't return to Sharks; Burns back to blue line.

Is Boyle worth giving a 2 year deal?

@mrcisback 1) Hard to throw that on Botta. 2) Always was an opinion for him. Obviously there was never any guarantee the team would stay in Nassau. 3) Here he is reporting news. Not providing an opinion.

@ivo

YES!

We need a couple of veteran players with a decent amount of skill left.  (Leadership + development of young players)

@ivo I was wondering if you can give him a 1yr deal with a club option but I am not sure if they do those kind of contracts in the NHL.  I am thinking though he might sign with a Detroit or Vancover...Doubt unless there are no offers does he think about the Island

@orange2327  YOU can't even enjoy a nice goal.  If it was Derek Stepan you would be delighted with that goal.

@orange2327 I think it was nice how he tucked it in over the shoulder, not necessarily the move.  Yes, he would have been crunched - or at least contested.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@orange2327  guess you didnt see the whole play.  it was a fast break, and a beautiful pass to brock who was cutting toward the goal.  it was a 2v1 right in front of the net so the defenseman had no choice but to take away the pass as opposed to taking the body.

@leebobb @mrcisback   Lee, Botta was asked at least 20 different times over 5 years from all types of people in hockey about the Islanders moving or getting a new arena deal done and its always been the same answer "NO" and "YES". Every prediction he said has been wrong. After a while a person like that loses his creditability in any thing he says

@orange2327 How on earth do you spell that word wrong 8 times when it is correctly spelled in the message that you are replying to?

myisles72

@orange2327  You really undermine yourself when your literally cannot spell "sense". And you really drive the point home by misspelling it in all caps 8 times in a paragraph. Congratulations to you, genius. You've topped yourself. Keep up the good work. And you called Doc a rube yesterday.

doc942

@orange2327  It makes no sense that you keep spelling sense incorrectly.

slapshot18_rs

@orange2327  if we were talking about if it made senSe for the islanders to hire snow in the first place, your points are all valid.  i was clearly not talking about any of that, and strictly only about the halak scenario, where it does make senSe that they havent signed him yet not knowing the cap floor and ceiling.

@willymayshays @ivoHe will turn 38 before next season, but I think he still has something left in the tank.  He could be a good veteran presence.  He averaged over 20 minutes last season.  The question is - is he willing to come to a young team that won't be winning much before he retires?  I wonder if there may be younger options available that can still provide the veteran presence.

@slapshot18_rs @mrcisback  No slapshot. I read the article several times and it specifically said that he would be a high first round draft pick. So what does that mean 3,4,5,6. I'm going to have to try to find that article.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@mrcisback  you sure you're not misinterpreting that? a 1st overall pick is technically a high first round pick...or did they specifically state he wouldnt be #1? i find that hard to believe he wouldnt be #1 in this years draft.

dkdk
dkdk

That's my thinking too MrC. The kids are showing positive signs but if we don't improve the crease it could be more of the same.

mrcisback
mrcisback

@dkdk   I'll tell you what DK i would give Buffalo the 2015 1st round pick and keep this years #5 pick. This years top 5 pick could be used as part of a blockbuster deal in trying to acquire a top left winger to play with Tavares. Or i would pick the best player who's there at #5. I read an article the other day that i thought was a little shocking. Everyone talks about how the 2015 draft is superior to this years draft but the article went on to say that if Conner McDavid was available for this years draft he wouldn't be the #1 overall pick. The article just said he would be a high 1st round pick. We need  to get a top goaltender signed pretty soon or else we might be in the same position this time next year.

dkdk
dkdk

Mrc ... Completely agree. The closer a player gets to July 1 the more options they have. And I still would like to have a goalie in place, a good one, before deciding which pick to give buffalo.

@slapshot18_rs Hey spelling B champ the other day you posted something along the lines of people being in a "colt".I'm sure you meant cult....Right?So get over yourself already.

@orange2327 And the issue is what that you don't know how to spell or don't know how to use a spell checker?

@orange2327  "I'm an idiot because I can't make a lamp?" "No, you're a genius because you can't make a lamp."

@orange2327 ONCE is a typo. EIGHT TIMES is an issue.

@orange2327  typo is a misfire with your finger, not delibrately spelling a word wrong eight times out of eight times.

@slapshot18_rs look, i do not agree with many people on this, or any other, islanders sight. but to berate people just because they don't share your opinion seems ridiculous to me.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@orange2327  i posted an opinion, not even slightly directed at you. pretty sure you started the "jousting"

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

what does that have to do with anything? seems like you're looking to argue.  all i said was it makes sense why teams havent signed players yet. nothing more nothing less and so far you have brought up hiring your back up goalie as gm, hiring minor league coaches, trading nino, strait, and retaining cappy.  do you not see how your posts get annoying? my comment had nothing to do with any of this at all.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@orange2327  that may be true. but since you have literally no basis for that, why are you trying to instill that idea in peoples minds? i get the skepticism but......maybe he wants to play with a world class player like john tavares and help turn the once proud franchise around.  so unlikely, i know. not under wang or snow, i know.

dzruggie

@dkdk  At this point in his career he would be a better fit as a nice #4-6 with a contender that needs PP help.  Nice thought but it just is not a match.

Speaking of SJ how much do they blow up their core?  Along those lines we send the #5 and Frans for Joe Thorton and slide him over to LW....a little older than I would like to play with JT however the guy is an assist machine

dkdk
dkdk

I love Boyle and think he has a couple good years left and would be an awesome mentor and offer pp help. Just don't know if 38 year olds with options wouldn't go to true contenders. Definitely worth a call to me though.

willymayshays
willymayshays

@Don22 @willymayshays @ivo

I can actually look at that and think "low risk"

good defenders in their prime can get long term contracts that would bring them to Boyles age.  If I'm going to bring him in though, he has to be on board as a teacher/player.  If he can fit that role, yes I think he's worth a 2 yr contract.  I too think he has some left in the tank.

@orange2327  The ice is bigger but as everyone saw in the Olympics, the play is not pressed out on the peripheral thus the hitting (playing the body) in the lane is the same.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@orange2327  oh you mean the top 10 best defenseman in the nhl...ha!

by the way, it was a powerplay, hence the open ice and space to move, on a fast break.  keep trying bud.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@orange2327  haha so which guy pounds him, the one all the way along the boards or the one by himself in front of the net taking away the passing lane?
