Morning Skate: Boyle’s Chances of Signing

Kevin Schultz

It’s pretty quiet in Islander Country lately. There is no news at all on any possible transfer of ownership interests. The draft is still a few weeks away and free agency a bit further.

One small note is that Dan Boyle is going to make a decision on the Islanders sooner rather than later. Arthur Staple tweeted yesterday that Boyle will decide by the end of the week if he is interested in talking contract with the Islanders. If he decides to skip out on the Island, the Islanders could flip him around to some other team for a pick or, in the better scenario, is that contract talks do begin.

It’s known that Boyle wants to play for a contender and, as it stands, the Islanders are not a contender. Despite the addition of an actual goaltender, it’s hard to convince anyone the team is a contender when it finished 26th in the NHL last year. Hopefully, there’s a way to convince Boyle otherwise but at 37 years old, you can’t blame him for wanting to take his best shot at a Cup.

Also: LHH has a feature on how this year’s top draft picks compare to current NHLers… Should Sam Reinhart go #1 overall?

And finally… Sad Ranger fans. Thanks to Getty Images and Keith

Ranger fans may have been sad, but now they have hope, we're just flat out miserable or resigned to perpetual suckiness. We're really in no position to rip on Ranger fans.

@ Orange2327- If Boyle signs, we could be staring at 3 starting 5-11 Dmen. And I'm being generous on an inch or two for Hickey...

Boyle was a -8 this year and looked sluggish on the few Shark games I took in. He may get a nice deal, but at 38 and sliding, it could be a favor if he looks elsewhere.

Hockeyfights.com has named the  Islanders D. Johnson, KO of Sabres J. Scott the knockout of the year. Well we finally got 1st place in something. lol

If you could guarantee me being down 3-1 in the Cup finals next year, I'll sign up for it now. The Rangers, win or lose, are creating incredible revenue for their franchise. If the Rangers lose I will not say "ha ha, we still have a first rounder, you don't". I'll take the revenue, the good feelings, etc. from making it to the Cup finals. Remember, the Isles took a victory lap when the lost the the Pens in the first round. They honored the 92-93 team for losing to the Habs in the conference finals.

Apropos of nothing, the Rangers have no answer to Drew Doughty.  I see them dumping some pieces and throwing $80M+ at Subban.

Jeep any chance we could dress wang as John Scott and throw him at johnson?

@brian  I agree with you that honoring the 92-93 seems weak, but  I have to tell you, I am biased because I loved that run. I wanted so badly for the Isles to dethrone the Pens (don't like the Pens) from before the season started. It actually happened better that I imagined. So many great stories to it.

@brian The Islanders franchise is the Major League "Trophy kids" - They NEVER strive to be better!

@Macacawitz

I believe they cannot chase Subban due to the fact that they are without first round picks from the St. Louis trade...  Signing Subban as an RFA would mean sending those picks to Montreal and if the Rangers do not have those picks, I am not sure they can even try to sign him...

@dkdk 14-2 Kings..

Queen gets pulled after a 7 goal first, and goes after Mark Messier in the locker room.

Sather is restrained by assistants from jumping off the press box after his stogie.

Dolan gets a DUI after urinating Coliseum grounds, on Wang's parking's space.

Bettman bans Wang for life from NHL, in support of Sterling's NBA rebuttal.

@orange2327- Yep, I'm with you. Viz is going to make a hair under 5 MIL this year. That's alot of lettuce for what he showed last year, and not getting any younger. Maybe Snow can fleece another GM for a Bailey, Viz, Hickey combo....and in return, a new Zamboni..

@dkdk

Naw,  he would need to grow about 11 inches, or we can chip in and buy him some stilts.lol

@dkdk - Twice..?

You're being waaaay to generous on the Beetle Bailey highlight film lasting 41 seconds...LOL

On a serious note, what do you think on Snow going after ANOTHER 5-11 late 30's D-man? Viz must be shot or not looking to well recovering. I understand he is not a leader type in the room, but having two small aging D-men, if Boyle signs, kinda smells trouble. What are they going to do with Carkner? Hickey? Ect?

I hope Halak stocks up on his Wheaties and Red Bull....

@REDSpointofview @Macacawitz I don't know the scale, but yes - an RFA signing of Subban would cost considerable draft picks, including #1s.  Unless they trade for his rights.

@Jason Zimmermann @REDSpointofview @Macacawitz

Thank you all,,, Don & shlo, too,,, for clearing that up.  I would think that any chase of Subban would be far too cost prohibitive for Glen Sather.  On the other hand, should Garth Snow take that same run at Subban, I might actually applaud the initiative...

shlo
shlo

@Don22 @REDSpointofview @Macacawitz I believe the scale is based upon the offer, money plus years. In any event, a player like Subban will command a significant amount of draft picks in return.

@wangbegone @chrisredux LOL - I'm not surprised.  I should have known.  Shocking that we've actually had a couple of normal interactions in between the battles.

Try not to get banned this time.  LOL.

@wangbegone @chrisredux  Zee, its really you, welcome back...no one threatened wangs life more than you did..i missed it!!!! And you too Chris, good to have you guys back, we need some more realistic fans around here...

@REDSpointofview @Jason Zimmermann @Macacawitz I would expect he would probably almost double his salary which would put him over 5 mil per.  I did a search and I think that would cost 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks.  If he gets close to 7 mil add another 1st round pick.

Pretty steep costs, which is why you don't often see upper-tier RFAs being signed to offer sheets.

@orange2327 I would trade Bailey for a bag of used pucks, if we could find a GM as dumb as Snow.

@wangbegone- Your preaching to the choir brother. There is enough on Wang's dogging of the feds, 35 days, the 750MIL bonus paid to him from CA theft of share holders, and scams to build a new Coli. He is truly a "con-artist"..and let' not forget Sanjay doing a 12 year stretch. Anyway, he's never been convicted and STILL the "owner"...man, I can't finish my calzone after typing that.

@Don22 @REDSpointofview @Jason Zimmermann @Macacawitz

I would think a Norris Trophy winning defenseman hits the market at well above $5 million.  Chara pulls down $6.7, Karlsson $6.5 with Keith the bargain at $5.5 million and Seabrook actually making more than him with Chicago..  Some notable non-Norris winners are making piles more than that with Weber at $7.85, Suter at $7.35 and Doughty at $7 million.  My guess is that Subban's agents are looking in the $7 million range and in reality that would price him out of Snow's budget...

bammer26
bammer26

@dkdk - Yeah, no chance on that, unless it's hormonically grown...LOL

dkdk
dkdk

Uh oh Langevin, you just posted facts about wangs background, FACTS, be ready for the rebuttal posts from those that "aren't defending wang" .....

Don22
Don22

@REDSpointofview Then you need 2 1st rounders, a 2nd and a 3rd.  Hefty price that neither the Isles nor the Rags have, unless Montreal is willing to accept 2016 picks.

Isleguy27
Isleguy27

I suspect you are fairly accurate with your guesstimate of $7M. I would venture to say his agent will ask for even more.

$6,268,176 – $7,835,219: Two 1st’s, a 2nd and a 3rd round draft pick.

Over $7,835,219: Four 1st round draft picks.

@REDSpointofview

A box of chocolate donuts may be out of Snows budget, he only gets to spend what Wang tells him he could spend, Wang hold all the strings to his purse.

@Isleguy27 I'd rather trade with Florida and draft Arron Ekblad, The 5th and Hamonic should be enough. Then sign another veteran defenseman.

dkdk
dkdk

I hear that! That background they refuse to acknowledge is why we are where we are.

Don22
Don22

@mrcisback @Isleguy27 Not that I think Hamonic is great, but why include him in the trade.  If FLA wanted a Dman - why would they not just pick Ekblad themselves?  I would think FLA would be looking for offense in return.  Don't they have a few pretty good dmen?

bammer26
bammer26

@dkdk - Yup. It was all about the LHP and real estate. We have covered this time and time again. I hope he gets his one day....he's made Spano and Milstein look like choir boys. Why?? $$$$$$$$

dkdk
dkdk

I have often said that Gluckstern and millstein were horror shows but they were at least honest. From day 1 they said it was all about getting an arena.

Don22
Don22

@mrcisback @Don22 @Isleguy27 OK.  I suppose you can say they are getting a good defender in Hamonic and still will be able to pick a higher level offensive talent at #5.

But if I recall we were actually discussing something like this a couple of weeks ago and I think FLA was asking for the sun and the moon for the #1 and Toronto was considering giving it to them.
