News: Islanders sign Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski to four-year deals

The Islanders have signed forwards Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski to four-year contracts. (Arthur Staple)

  • Kulemin gets $16.75 million over four years. His cap hit is $4.1875 million.
  • Grabovski gets $20 million over four-years. His cap hit will be $5 million.

They were teammates in Toronto from 2008 to 2013. Islanders assistant Greg Cronin was with the Leafs for part of that time.

  • He is 5-11, 183 and last season had 8 of his 35 points on the PP, averaged 15:45 per game and 1:26 on the PP.

Kulemin, 27, scored 9 goals and 20 assists in 70 games for Toronto last season and had a cap hit of $2.8 million.

  • Kulemin scored 30 goals in 2010-11 but in the three seasons since has scored 7 goals, 7 goals and 9 goals and has not topped 30 points in any of those seasons.
  • He is 6-1, 225 and last season had 153 hits, averaged 16:12 per game and saw 2:35 on the PK

Dave Maloney on WFAN actually praised the Isles for these moves.   It's not saying much and he's probably just being polite, but it's nice to hear someone (anyone) say something good about the Isles for a change.  Even if our "blockbusters" are most team's secondary moves.

Good signing! Caps made a big mistake not re signing Grabo but I heard it was a package deal and GMBM wasn't even interested (schmuck). Grabo was a possession stud on a possession less team and he will definitely help Kulemins game. Also I have always liked watching Caps vs. Isles on MSG plus when I've had to, Howie and Butch call the game correctly and aren't major homers like most other teams commentators, cough(Bruins). Good job and good luck.

P.S. I'm so glad Nabakov isn't there anymore he always shut us out.

Perhaps snow finally did something right that will benefit this team who knows, I guess time will tell, but right now I am praying it works with these new guys, to put the proverbial cherry on top of it all would be to either trade Bailey, which may be impossible, or at least drop him down to the 3rd line, and forget the whole notion of sticking him on the 1st line with JT, and KO that wouldn't bring his game up, it may bring those 2 guys games down, if I am wrong, and Josh shows that he is ready to play the game that he is being paid to play, then perhaps promote him up to the 2nd line, but we will see.

Que sera, sera.

Trade coming. GUy you will get the most for is Nielson. One of the few Isles over 30. Terrific player but you have to give to get. Bailey would be the guy you get the least for. Grabner falls somewhere in between.

Probably getting Phaneuf. BUT don't forget JT HATES Pheneuf. Feels (accurately) that Pheneuf tried to injure him. Once in an exhibition....OK stood up for JT and he also got hit by the dirty Pheneuf. Same season in Coliseum. Pheneuf deliberately banged his stick over JTs head.

This was the night the Isles became JT's team (if it  wasn't already). After he got hit JT went to the bench and slammed the door so hard that everyone in the Coliseum heard it. He then yelled at the ref for not calling anything. However, the big thing happened right after that. JT turned stared down the bench at his teammates.

They got the message. A few nights later they had that huge brawl with Pittsburgh. Since then the Isles stand up for each other every time.

Also, Pheneuf has been challenged by Matt Martin And Eric Boulton. Pheneuf would not fight. Martin stood 30 feet inside the blueline with the play down the other end but Pheneuf behind his own goal. Martin kept motioning him to fight. Pheneuf didn't move until Martin skated away.

Most times a guy becomes your teammate & everything is forgotten. Does JT feel that way or will bringing Pheneuf here create problems?

I am stunned that WangSnow actually spent $$ on real NHL players. Always liked Grabvosky (sp?). I like the goalie acquisition too. Cory Conacher can play in the NHL..more that that???? Don't know much about Kul.menin.

I've ripped WangSnow but at least these guys are NHL players. Did they overpay? Absolutely, but that is what you have to do when you are a consistent loser with an owner with a terrible rep.

Surprised no one has mentioned this. I'm noy a fan of Euros and particularly not Russians. But this move could very well have something to do with the move to Bklyn. A lot of LI fans are NOT going to Bklyn. Bklyn is almost all Ranger territory. Isles keep records and since 1972 Isles drew less fans from Bklyn than any other boro except the Bronx. Isles need a new fan base and the Russian areas of Bklyn is a wise place to start.

Once a new owner is here you can expect one of the Ovie type Russians to become an Islander.

This is the best FA season WangSnow has had in a long while.

Kulemin and Grabovski are gonna be on the same line....2nd line. They need to be paired together, they were most productive as a tandem. My guess is Grabner is the other winger. Nielsen will center the 3rd line.

Now go get a D-Man and we will have a team that can compete for a full season.

Looks like we got a trade coming!!!! Great move by Garth. Love this. He's done very well at the draft and in the signings. Gonna be a intense camp this year. Won't be surprised if we deal with the leafs giving Cronin is here. He's know what's up and it looks like leafs are going in a different direction. So I see phaneuf coming. How's this sound. Fran's and bailey for kadri and dion

BTW 3 of  Grabovski's goals and 4 of his pts last year came in the first game of the year against CHI.  He had something to prove after getting bought out.

Aside from being a solid 2nd line center Grabovski brings something this team needs in a big way. A center with a faceoff percentage of over 50%. Last season he was at 54%

Other than the overpayment, I wonder if they got a No Trade Clause too......................................

not awful moves. better options but i cant really complain.... but where do they play? someones gotta get traded... lets see how this plays out..

This is terrible. My wife is a huge leafs fan and I have seen plenty of these two. I am dreading going home from work she will be laughing at me. We way overpaid. Would of been better off spending 9 million on one player.

@Don22 I don't necessarily think the total of the moves is secondary.  Starting Goalie, Halak, Chad Johnson, Grabovski, Kulimen, Skille, Conacher, Brennan etc.  Pretty solid all the way around. And no significant losses off of the roster.  Look at what other teams lost.  Rangers lost 3 or 4 key guys.  Penguins lost 3 or 4 key guys.  Replaced with what I think are lesser guys.

@fourcups  Phaneuf is a complete defensive liability.  Just watch the breakdown that the leafs had in game 7 of the 2013 playoff against Boston.  The one where the Bruins came back from 4-1 in the third period. Phaneuf was out of position on at least two of the goals.  He was even behind Reimer in the net on one of them.  Please not Phaneuf... He is the absolute worst.

@dimaio34 I'm not a fan of Paneuf and I'm hearing he has slowed.  I think Kadri is a good player, but not what the Isles need.  Where does he play?  He's not really a 3rd line guy. Regardless, I don't think the Leafs make that trade.  Not enough coming their way unless they are just looking to rid salary.

Joey Ferguson

@dimaio34 i wish for that trade....  but gotta love the draft and the signings this far. got a good feeling about all the guys

@Sam Sam exactly. he hated playing under him and his numbers declined because of the roles he was in.  whether you liek cappy or not, he is a players coach.  this could be a good fit for him. time will tell.

its a little bit of an overpay for grabo but its not really that big of a deal. he was completely mishandled and mistreated under carlyle.  he was ecstatic when he was bought out because it meant he didnt have to play under him anymore.

@hoverlow  I guess the Leafs would not have bought out grab if they had him at the same price we got him for,,,,, um wait

@snostorm Depth at 4 mil? I doubt that, we overpaid for sure. But everybody here wanted to overpay to get "something". So this is the something that wanted to come here.

We kicked the  British out of here over 200 years ago, and I prefer them over the Ruskies.

@slapshot18_rs  yes you are right he was mishandled under Carlyle.  Of course the isles will handle him properly, they are best at handling talent.   Either way the isles could of done a lot better than these two at that price.. hell give Vanek 8 mil a yr.  problem is Wang got cheap with JT and you can't have him paid so far below anyone else on the team.  Now hopefully Garth will get a good return for whatever O he trades for a D.  I doubt he will but one can hope.

@shlo @snostorm This is the point:   Who wanted to come here even for an over pay?  These two guys.  This entire board was upset yesterday.  The vast majority of us criticized Snow for doing nothing.  Grabovski can still play.  I don't know too much about Kulemin.  At least Snow is doing something!  A trade has to be in the works for a D.

Guys, obviously there are players who will not come here under any circumstances.  As some of you correctly, IMO, pointed out, it's the owner.  Snow doesn't help.  Nor does the losing.  If this is the best we can do, then I'm fine with it.  We need a veteran D and a trade is the only way.  Now there is enough up front to make that trade.  It will probably cost us Frans or Grabner.  I don't like it, but it's necessary to get the D.  It better be for a good D and not a declining rental.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@hoverlow well contrary to what you believe, the players rave about playing under capuano. he's not going to play him as a checker like caylyle.

shlo
shlo

@snostorm no question we can afford them, the issue is where will they fit. It has to be 3rd or 4th line, maybe the bigger of the 2 will be LW on the first. What I was saying 4 mil per year for a depth guy is too much. But we have a losing team and few players want to play for a losing team so we have to overpay.

@shlo @jepliberty

I remember over 62 years ago, in elem school being instructed by the teachers on how to get under our desks like that would protect us from a nuclear blast, coming from the Ruskies, how stupid.

@shlo @snostorm Dude Graboski is 2cnd line center material Franz to Hawks for Sharp that solves alot. Nelson will replace Franz as 3rd line center. Strome can play left or right wing on any line & get PP time at point if he wants. Finally NHL caliber players on roster. Bailey could go along w/ Grabs , Frans ,Mcdonald Casey etc... I don't care. New blood was needed & now we got 2 plus the depth signings. Someones going hopefully landing us a good return. Finally something positive happened.

@shlo @snostorm  I don't know about that...Conacher played with both Marty St. Louis and Stamkos in Tampa...I'd bet he gets the first look on line 1

@snostorm @shlo

That's something imho that cappy isn't too adept at, he doesn't even call time outs when the other team is coming on strong and evening the score up.
