Okposo, Visnovsky Day-to-Day

The Islanders have announced that Kyle Okposo left practice early today with a lower body injury. Defender Lubomir Visnovsky did not practice today and is suffering from an upper body injury. Both players are listed as day-to-day.

Good hope we lose every game but you know they will win just enough to get the 4th pick so they can draft the wrong person

Thank you, ejej, and others for giving context to the absurdly long tenures that Snow and Capuano have had in their jobs. It is truly mindboggling how they have lasted as long as the best in the business while being the absolute worst in the business.

Snow MUST go. IMMEDIATELY! He has had his 8-year tenure. He even made some good moves along the way (Streit, PAP, Moulson, Vis, Nabby, Grabner, drafting Nelson) but all of those were made years ago and he has proven in the past year that he is not the man to build this team into a contender. Every single move he has made since last May has been a complete and utter failure. Every single trade; every single free agent signing; everything! It is time to go. NOW!!!!!!!!!!

As inept as Snow has been, especially in the past year, I actually think Cappy is even worse at his job. He brings zero to the table. No fire, no in-game strategy, zero lineup creativity. The fact that this guy has outlasted most of the coaches in this league is simply incredible.

The most frustrating part is that, in spite of everything, the team is not that far away from being good. In fact, four simple steps even Garth can accomplish would get this team on its way:

1) Tank with extreme prejudice: play Nilsson and/or Poulin in EVERY game the rest of the way. Either they show they can play (doubtful) or they will lose nearly every game the rest of the way, sink the team to 29th overall and guarantee the Isles a top-3 pick in the 2014 draft.

2) Replace Cappy with Peter Laviolette.

3) Re-acquire PAP. The Sakic/Roy regime does not want or need him. The Isles can bring back top-6 forward for 10 cents on the dollar and take some pressure off of Strome, Lee and Nelson.

4) Fourth and foremost: GET GOALIES!!! Goaltending is the cheapest commodity in the NHL yet somehow Garth can't seem to acquire one. Even the Oilers, another tattered franchise, has managed to acquire Bryzgalov, Scrivens and Viktor Fasth this season. Any of these goalies would have improved the Isles' goaltending stituation at little expense in terms of salary or trade.

Unfortunately I can see a scenario where we defer the number one pick we owe the Sabres until next season. Snow resigns Nabokov for another year  and we are even worse next season! With the pick Buffalo receives from us  they choose Connor Mcdavid projected to be the "next" Crosby! They also have our second round pick and all the while Vanek is scoring goals for the Wild! After a horrible "lame duck" season on the Island, we go too Bklyn as one of (if not) worst teams in the NHL. All the while Snow and Capuano retain their jobs, Wang refuse too sell and all Islander fans finally give up on this god foresaken franchise!

Very well said "justintime",   You couldn't have put it down any better. something good came out of someone being difficult.

As far as the Hockey New`s low ranking of the Islanders Prospect Pool. I dont understand why Ryan Pulock is ranked 60th.  He is 6`1", 213 LBS, that's a big frame for someone with low body fat. He has a shot from the point that's better that most NHL players. Among WHL Defensemen he`s 4th in scoring and 2nd in goals. Also Captain of his Team. All in a sudden he`s a 3RD round Draft pick. All in a sudden every team in the League has two prospects better than him.    We Just never win.

justintime

@rmreturns  You are really confusing me now.  I thought we were discussing Strome/Reinhart and the how The Hockey News sees the Isles prospects.

All of a sudden you come at me with a rant on how he has the worst lease in the league and he can't make money in Long Island.  Not sure how that is relevant to Prospects.

You seem to change the subject to money every time you can't answer a question or debate the argument on it's own merit.  I have not been on this blog that long, so not sure if I caught you at a bad time or this is a constant pattern with you?

Can we stick to one thing at a time, you still never answered me why the Hockey News ranks the Isles in the bottom five in prospects(even though it is on a curve)?

You seem to think Snow is very good at drafting, as you put it.  It seems that THN disagrees with you and thinks he is one of the worse.

If he doesn't have drafting(which has been the defense of his supporters as being his strength), then what is he good at?  We know he sucks at signing any UFA's, we know he sucks at asset management letting many players go for nothing and we know his trading skills are laughable, as everybody on TV and Print has pointed out lately.

Would love to hear your response, without going back to the money issue.  I'm not that interested in debating that, as nobody knows the truth but Wang there.

Having said that, I will just quickly tell you my stance on the money issue.

I have heard your arguement from many people and I have also heard he has the best cable deal in the NHL and he doesn't even count that towards his numbers on the Isles side.  That is pure profit on another business.  Along with that, he now has revenue sharing from the league coming in and guaranteed payments in the tens of millions of dollars coming from Bklyn soon.

Either way you look at it, it is irelevant in the big picture. If he is losing money(which I'm not convinced) then how come he has not tried to make the playoffs more and recoup that?  Somebody else stated the Devils made an additional 30 mil from their run a few years ago in the playoffs.

Why not hire a real GM and build it the right way?

Bottomline here is that even if he is losing, he made his own bed.  He has nobody to blame but himself.  You say he has made some mistakes, boy is that underestimating the obvious.

He has made many mistakes that have made the Islanders the NHL laughingstock in his 14 years, some bigger than others.

The two that stand out is keeping Milbury on for so long, when he admittely knew nothing about hockey and smart people along with fans were advising him to fire him.

The second is of course hiring your active backup goalie to be GM, that is what has us in this mess today.

How about firing Neil Smith after 40 days?  Neil Smith did better with FA's in those 40 days than Snow has in 8 years.

Even if he is losing money, it is not because of anything else you say.  It is because how he managed this team.

A few deep playoff runs and being a true contender for a few years, would have changed this whole picture.  We had the ammo to do that a few times, but  terrible trades by Milbury and now the same by Snow has derailed that again.  Not to mention his terrible asset management,( which has left our depth very weak)  even with all these high picks.

If he did this right, he would have had his new building a long time ago in Nassau.  He alienated fans so much with his moves, that fans rightfully so,  said no to giving him more free money.

Only one man to blame here, Wang.

@TonyM  It's not just Mcdavid, you should read up on the two U.S born kids slotted right behind him. Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin are going to be nasty! It's a deep draft next season my friend, things could get really  ugly around here

madmike
madmike

@sparkey Sparkey...The Hockey News doesn't just rank players from last year's draft.  It's a ranking of EVERY prospect that's not in the NHL.  There are kids that have been on that list for 4 years now.

justintime
justintime

@sparkey Thanks for the compliment on the post.  As far as Pulock, I actually really

like him as a prospect and he probably could be rated a little higher, but he had a down year last year because of some injuries and might have been picked a little higher, if he was healthy all year.

The Islanders don't have a defenseman with his skill set, so he is unique.  Great shot at the point and at the least will be a PP specialist in the NHL.  He also can make some nice offensive rushes and create offense, at least in Juniors.  Solid frame and can also lay out some big hits and be physical when he wants to.  He does get beat one on one more than he should and makes his share of defensive mistakes.  He has been in Juniors for four years and he might be just getting bored at this point.

I think with his big shot and all around offense, he has Macinnis type upside, even though he will probably never reach that high.   Still, he is a very good prospect.

Interesingly enough, The Islanders could have the russian D Zadorov with that choice.  He was actually the best player available according to Mckenzie when the Isles picked.  Zadorov is a monster at like 6-6, physical, fights, great skater and great offensive potential.  He legitimately has a chance to be the next Pronger in my opinion, I think the Hockey News rated him like sixth to Pulock's 60th, if I remember correctly.

Pulock had his first playoff game tonight and his team Brandon won 6-3, he had a goal+ assist and was +2.  He was also named first star.  Nice start to the playoffs for Pulock.  Zadorov had 2 goals and 2 a in his team's playoff win tonight.

As much as I like Pulock, I would take Zadorov over him in a second.  So can't even give credit to Snow, as he might have a missed a good one there, that was projected  for us.

Mantha taken by Det, is another one we could have had at 14 and he is looking great too.  There will be plenty of stars out of the 2013 draft I think.

@sparkey

3rd rd pick?  where are you getting this from?

This site gets things wrong so often it's Crazy.  Hockey news does not rank the Islanders prospect pool 20 something.  That number, 26 , I think is derived from rating the # of picks and how high the pick is vs  the amount of young talent.

In other words... A lot of teams with better records and lower picks (near the end of each rd in the draft) often enough have comparable if not better prospects DESPITE their picks not being top 10 picks like the Islanders have had yr after yr.

@justintime  You're wrong Justin. NYI has had the lowest revenue in the NHL for years. If they sold out every game and all home playoff games they'd still lose money with an average payroll because of NVMC's limited revenue streams. And they'd never get that far with a low-avg payroll. Running NYI wrong had NOTHING to do with not getting a new building in nassau. Owners from the late 80s were trying to get a new building and the Town of Hempstead/nassau wouldn't allow it. This has gone on long before Wang. There weren't enough people or fans interested to approve the arena referendum which wasn't just for NYI and would've cost nassau county taxpayers only $54 a year. I spend more than that for dinner. Only 11% of eligible nassau voters voted on the referendum.  Nobody cared.

Only one common denominator in blaming failure of no new arena since the late 80s and NYI moving - TOH/nassau.

@justintime @rmreturns  Quick rebuttal to only one part of your nice long essay.  Hockey Prospectus does a curve basing on how players were drafted vs their draft position.  If you look at almost any other Hockey Prospect sign you will see the Isles are a top 10 prospect team.  It just doesn't show that way on Hockey Prosepectus due to the lottery curve they throw in.  As for the Wang and losing money issue it has been something me and my friends have debated for the past 5 years and I completely agree with RM.  Why would you as a businessman and owner who bought a team that plays in the worst Arena in sports and has the worst concessions and parking lease in all of sports be willing to spend millions on this team when every project you try to build to help make the crap hole of hempstead into a mini metropolis gets rejected left and right even when you were willing to put up all of your own money(including his investors at the time).  I'm sorry but put yourself in his shoes and tell me how you would feel about the county of Nassau after his 4 separate attempts to get a deal done were rejected and I am asking you to think about this objectively as a businessman not a fan of a team like we all get caught up in.  Many people talk about this organizations lack of hockey sense and I completely agree with that when it comes to the front office or coaching(for the most part I like Weight he reminds me of a Owe or Adam Oates), but first and foremost Charles Wang is a business looking to make money.  He and anyone else who has internet access and a calculator can tell that even if the Isles sold out all 42 games a year Wang would still barely be breaking even.   I am not saying that bashing on Snow and Wang is wrong, but all i'm saying is let's see what Wang brings to the table money wise now that he is getting paid to play at Barclays+amazing concessions deal+ amazing TV deal.  IF the 7 years 50 million that was publicly offered to Vanek does not go towards a Goalie this offseason I will furious.  I know many people want  top flight defenseman also but top FA defenseman is the 36 year old LI Native Rob Scuderi who will probably get over 5 million a year which isn't worth it one bit.  I'm excited for the kool aid comments

Wangs hiring of snow after milbury and Maloney ruined the club from 1994-2006 was a ridiculous hire considering Garth was the back up goalie with no experience whatsoever as a scout/coach/asst coach/much less a gm! That and putting two minor league coaches (Gordon/crappy) in to lead a club that really needed a veteran coach with a solid pedigree!! All wang wanted was a lackey to do what wang wanted while he tried to Hornswoggle the folks in long island with his grandiose 77 acre lighthouse which Nassau CTY wasnt going to agree too! The entire 14 yrs of wangs tenure has been about holding the fans/team/county hostage to his prized Xanadu which never came about!! Other cap issue teams have been successful BUT they are run by competent GMs and coaches!! We are not!!! End of story!!

It is sad what we have had to put up with as  a fanbase under Wang.

@John Richards - Vic, the Snowman is going on year 8 as GM (July 18, 2006).

Shockingly, he is in a list of some big names that have as long or longer tenure on the job. 6 out of 11 listed GM'S below have won a Cup, with the remaining having success in terms of playoffs or a winning product on the ice. Talk about job security, only available in this farce.

And don't forget that Wang reached out to Bill Torrey BEFORE he hired Snow. Torrey wanted full reign of Hockey ops, and factual answer from CBW: "I can't do that". A towel to wipe off the Head and Shoulders from Snow's noggin, and the rest is history.

Let's go Devils tonight eh?? It's that time of the year...

Boston Bruins / Peter Chiarelli / May 26, 2006

Carolina Hurricanes / Jimmy Rutherford / June 24, 1994

@David Schwartz @jepliberty@jimmydev

You are in the minority on this thread with that kind of thinking, Tavares was a no brainer, and as we all know Snow has no brain. What happened to the other 13 years of Wangs ownership, and the other 7 years of Snows 'leadership'? Yeah I thought so.

dkdk

Exactly Vic .... I think you may be alluding to a point a remember vividly. After Stromes 2nd game (his 2nd game was very good) there was something that actually posted that imagine in 2 years when Strome is centering the 1st line and JT is in the middle of the second line.

So right there, 2 games in someone had Strome as a top 3 player in THE NHL. After 2 games!!! And at least he played 2 games. Reinhart is already a 4 time Norris winner without even stepping foot on an NHL rink.

And back to the shill points if all drafting is largely a crapshoot, when you are SOLELY building a team by the draft isn't this entire rebuild a bit of a lie then anyway??

Vicp73
Vicp73

@madmike @dkdk  Your exactly right Mike, the problem is many on here will build up these kids, place them into roster spots, and predict even before they've played a game what their NHL careers will be. Don't tell me you Haven't heard Strome was the next JT before?

madmike
madmike

@Vicp73 @dkdk Shea Weber went 49th overall in the second round.  That means 18 teams passed on him TWICE!!!!!

madmike
madmike

@dkdk The same can be said for drafting 18 year old kids in the first place.  It's subjective and opinion based.  It's not an exact science.

dkdk
dkdk

David .... I think you are partially missing what I am saying. I think a lot of players get somewhat skewed in their rankings because they are NYI prospects and our prospects never seem to live up to billing. Does that mean they were bad picks, brought along poorly, or a combo? That is debatable but what isn't it is the fact for a series of largely top 5 picks we should have a bunch of impact young players. And to date we don't. We have JT. Could Strome and Reinhart be different? Of course but it means bucking a long established track record.

And I equate prospects to other sports too. I am also a met fan (double the pain please) and I despise the Yankees. I see the mets always build up their prospects too (so they don't have spend a ton of money on NOW) and those guys never pan out either. Generation K, butch Huskey, Shawn Abner, etc. They were all gonna change the mets, and they all did nothing. Meantime the Yankees more often than not push a prospect or two then trade them for immediate help and win. It hates me to post the paragraph but it is true.

The only thing I will say to defend my mets is the more recent prospects seem to have exhibited some hope (Matt Harvey) and they added more via trade (syndeeragard) and that seems to coincide with hiring an experienced pro GM. And you KNOW THAT IS NEVER HAPPENING HERE.

David Schwartz
David Schwartz

@dkdk  I'm sorry guys, but that rationale is supremely lacking merit.  So you are telling me all the teams that passed on Tom Brady 5 times in the same draft new something more about the player then the team that decided to take him.  I understand this organization is a joke, but you discount our prospect talent way too much.  Also when you say hype up I hope you are just referring to fans like us on these blogs because no one officially on the Islanders has done anything to hype up their prospects.  Unfortunately that is something we as fans have always done(Look at Nino as a prime example)

Vicp73
Vicp73

@dkdk  Or maybe 14 other teams passed on Pulock because they figured out long ago he wasn't  the next AL MacInnis. If he was what Snow and the New York Islanders  propaganda machine have built Poluck up to be, ask yourself  would 14 other organizations with double the size scouting staffs have not targeted Pulock earlier in the draft ? I watched enough hockey over the years, to know just cause a player was dominating in junior doesn't mean anything. And DK i know you've seen more then your fair share of over hyped prospects, not just in hockey but every other sport. We both know not to get our hopes up with anything this organization does or tells us

dkdk
dkdk

Vic and John ..... I think the coaching and other miscellaneous "wangness" factors in as well. Maybe Pulock is ranked 60th as Islander, but maybe he'd be 40th as a Red Wing? And I don't mean that from an unfair bias POV I mean you also need to factor in caching and what type of development you have seen with prior picks. And when take JT out of that equation is sure isn't pretty. Then again I just don't think Pulock is earth shakingly good either.

Vicp73
Vicp73

@John Richards  Sub par? really your being way to nice. This coaching staff isn't qualified to coach junior 'C hockey. An absolute disgrace imo

The bottom line for me are all of these prospect lists are simply subjective and opinion based. Some opinions may be more knowledgeable and better than others but all are still opinions.

What never is an opinion or open for debate are standings. Once again the NHL and AHL numbers do not lie. We are scraping close to the bottom of both. And that is far more important than opinions. And it also is exceedingly too common.
