Isles Sign College Defender Kevin Czuczman

According to Elliotte Friedman of the CBC the Islanders have signed Lake Superior State defenseman Kevin Czuczman. He had 23 points and 10 goals in 36 games this season, his junior year, for the Lakers. With Lake Superior’s season over last weekend, he was eligible to be signed.

Czuczman had supposedly been highly sought after by as many as 16 teams, according to Draft Expert Mark Seidel. SB Nation recently named Czuczman as part of their WCHA first team, which named the best players in that conference, and has him ranked 82nd in their top 100 NCAA prospects feature, which is yet to be posted.

A Point Blank source has confirmed Friedman’s report.

Doesn't this go against the"New NHL" attitude of the Isles. Shouldn't he have been 5'9" 150 like the rest of the guys

I've watched this young guy play since he was 10 years old. He was highly skilled but he was always considered on the small side and I expect that hurt him at the junior draft. He has finally grown physically into his very smart hockey I. Q. I think he will turn out to be a valuable piece to the Islander puzzle.

16 teams interested in signing him and we got him?  How did this happen?  I haven't seen details on the contract.  Did we give him 26.2 million for 2 years so that we can reach the cap floor?

For the player: he burns a year now and is an RFA in 15-16....if he can play he will be making 2m soon.

For islanders: seems like we have a lot of almost NHLers ready to come in.

I question their commitment to Reinhardt ....I wonder if he will be part of a package to trade for a guy with one year left on his contract that we can wine and dine....and lose when he realizes there is no where to park in Brooklyn.

The Isles Defense needs help now and 2015 will take care of it self.    This only makes sense if a 6"3" 200+ college defenseman is going to fill in for some of more smallish Isles d-men for the balance of this year.  Over the next few seasons the likes of Reinhart, Mayfield, Puluck, Pokka and maybe Pedan and Pelech will be rolling in and the smallish and nonphysical  D-men like Ness, Strait and Visnovsky are long gone.   Of the current Islanders D-man, I can only see DeHahn and maybe Hickey playing in Brooklyn.

So I don't have a problem if Garth Snow beats out a dozen teams with a promise to Kevin Cruczman he can play right away with the Isles rather than in the AHL.

Looks like a good signing hopefully we get to see him this year. Great size Plus has team chemistry with our core guys. Good call by mgmt. see after this road trip and this signing you never give up. And as far as the protests. Don't support this nonsense. It's bad for the team. The players need our support. Drop the idea go to the game and cheer them on

Totally understand him signing here.  If they offer quality minutes for the rest of the year he could have a major leg up on Mayfield, Pedan, and possibly even Reinhardt for next years roster.

Someone agreed to sign here and we are having a party. Depth signing which is OK. Big body is something we need.

Anybody can tell me how to pronounce the name?

Donovan really looks so much better since his recall prior to the Olympics.  He has a lot of offensive ability and he plays physical, which I love.  He is making less mistakes and that was really his only problem.  Getting confidence and getting used to the speed of the NHL was huge for him.  de Haan with 13 points in the last 23 games, is looking better than I could have ever imagined.   Both can move the puck very well, can skate, have a nice shot, have good size (for offensive  D-Men) and play physical.  The 2 of them are helping me be very optimistic about the future of our defense.

Reinhart is one prospect I have a lot of confidence in.  Huge, smart, tough.  He will make the jump to the NHL without missing a step.  I am not saying he is a future all-star, I am simply saying that he at the least will be a solid, unwavering defensive force.

Add that to Hamonic and a BP defense that will be absolutely stacked (Mayfield, Pedan, Pulock, Pelech, Pokka and Graham)  Get one defensive minded veteran to help guide/teach/show and this team could look very different defensively.

@tornado When the team moves to Brooklyn the guys will park in the building right outside their locker room...didn't you see the clip with the elevator.  Buses and cars are lowered into the basement of the Barclays Center and spun around on a giant turntable for repositioning to exit the garages.  It really is a pretty sweet set up...check it out!

@tornado  what in gods name are you talking about? assuming that was just a bad attempt to bash snow?

It has nothing to do with Reinhart.

@hoser_14  is strait small?  not talking about his talent level, just his size.

@hoser_14

WTF is everyone's beef with Donovan?  Offensive skills with upside, 6' and 200 lbs plays physical and is looking better as the season goes on.   Personally Hamonic, de Haan and Donovan are my keepers.  Reinhart could get a call up before soon and then you can add him as well.

palffy

@hoser_14  No Hamonic in your Brooklyn projections?  Assuming that was an accidental omission.  And he is reporting directly to the team.

@dimaio34   We as die-hard Islanders fans have every right and reason to protest.  These protests are actually supporting the players.  Tavares wishes he was able to join us. We all want the cup one day (or at least win a playoff series again.)

Enough is enough!  Fraud? deceit? patheticness?  We must do something and going to the games cheering as all is fine is DEFINITELY not the way to proceed.

@dimaio34 its funny how 1 good period changed your outlook on this franchise. yes, if wang is still here we dont get free agents. can u name me a cup team without vital free agent pieces added?

@ny711ot We will never see Pedan in an Islanders uniform.  Between Reinhart, Pulock, Pokka, Pelech, Donovan, Mayfield and now this guy, theres too much compeition for him.

willymayshays

@gleichzahl

Get us a talented veteran who can really help this team, spend enough money and commit to winning and then I'll stop complaining.

I know you're being sarcastic but people never stop complaining!  Just ignore it if you don't like it.  What I love are the one's that constantly/consistently complain about all the "complainers"  (way to set the example, lol)

David Schwartz

@Sam Sam  Not disagreeing with the protests one bit, but was that Tavares comment serious as in he has told people this?  I know people on this blog say he is already fed up, but yet no official news sources have reported anything on it.

dimaio34
dimaio34

Listen I'm not supporting the owner. Just the players. I think down deep that Garth can only do so much. So the protesting is pointless because Wang will not listen. What ever is planned for this team. They are going to do. I would never have thought they were not bringing Moulson back. But they decided this at the start of the season

dimaio34
dimaio34

And no one period did not change my mind. I've been mostly upbeat throughout this season. But it was one heck of a period. And about the free agents I agree with you it's tough for us. And a new direction would help

@David. What teams? Its the GMs job to recruite not other parties. Snow hasn't done a good job of that but anyone that has come here has had good things to say about the team.

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

@isles23 Whats the point of them if they are not front and center and recruiting like other teams have their alumni do, what better way to try to pry free agents..i would think theyd be a good source...not one free agent has said, yeah mike bossy called me or so forth. why not?

isles23

@David. Your getting way off topic. Never said they help recruite anyonen or are front and center. Just that are apart or around the organization, which they are.

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

@isles23 Yes but when is the last time bossy was front and center helping out, butch is tv guy does he help recruit or talk to others about coming to li? Morrow yes is active, but again not front and center with getting guys to play here...when has any UFA said, i was impressed they sent Bossy Morrow Goring Nystrom to speak with me?

isles23
isles23

@David, Bossy actually has an official title with the team, check the website. Noticed you skipped over Morrow and oh yes that guy Butch too. Of course there is a lack of excitement, hasn't been much to be excited about which is why I started with we aren't the best run team but IMO many take it too far. People act like this team is the plague and that's just not the case. But the guy u cited in Vanek also stated he enjoyed his time here and the organization, something he didn't have to say.

army72
army72

@isles23 I agree.  Wang saved this team and loses millions a year. Maybe he's too loyal to his employees but, I don't think he puts any restrictions $$$ on Snow. They have made huge offers to Erhoff, paul martin, Chris Dury, Ryan Smyth, Thomas Vanek. Signed Tavares, KO, Neilson, Hamonic Bailey, Martin to long term contracts. He dished out huge money for DP and Yashin. I'm not saying all those signing were good but, he's willing to dish out the money.    I haven't heard any players talk bad about anyone from the organization. Players like Nabokov, Visnosky who chose to stay and signing the core players to long term deals. Snow just has to take the team over the hump. Snow has had difficulties taking the team to the next level. I think he will be aggressive this draft in making deals. I think they need a coaching change. Goalie and a few key players I think would do it.

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

@isles23 Nystrom who used to be always around...when is the last time you saw him? Bossy??? where is he? Guys from the 80s shouldnt be relied on its not 1990's any more...unfortunately we dont have any representatives from the 90s or 00s to carry the torch of enjoying playing here...Weight? he retired with us and thinks he can get to coaching quicker with us, which he did and prob will when Crappy gets fired....the reputation of the Islanders is terrible throughout the league, you had 2 players just do it in 1 week...Amac about the opposing fans and lack of excitement at coliseum and Vanek (vanek said perhaps was headed in right direction hed think about staying)

isles23
isles23

@david. I know we aren't the best run team atm but can someone find me one just one quote from a player or anybody apart of the organization saying anything bad about the team over the past few years? People point to Lafointane all the time as a guy that left but how about guys that stayed. Why is Morrow head of scouting? Bossy in the organization? Bobby Ny around on a regular basis? Weight stayed when I'm sure he had other options. Oh yea and that Tavares guy signing a 6 year deal when he didnt have to. Things can't be all bad here like many make it seem.
