Thomas Vanek has turned down a “substantial offer” from the Islanders, according to Newsday’s Arthur Staple. Staple writes that the offer was in the range of Vanek’s current $50 million, 7-year deal.
Staple said the Isles will try to move Vanek by the deadline on March 5. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.
Vanek came to the Isles, from Buffalo, on October 27 in a trade for Matt Moulson, a conditional 2014 first-round pick and 2015 second-round pick.
In 41 games with New York, Vanek has 15 goals, 23 assists and is a +7 on the ice.
