Strome Back to Bridgeport, Martinek Off IR

The Islanders are sending Ryan Strome back to Bridgeport.

New York needs to make room on the roster as Radek Martinek is coming off injured reserve (Staple).

Strome was named to the AHL All-Star team on January 9.

Staple also notes that “NHL teams received a memo prior to season saying that a player who plays more than 15 of 20 games prior to Olympic break cannot be assigned to AHL during break.”

He also quotes Garth Snow as saying: “The development of all our young players is important. (Strome) needs to play during the break.”

Kevin Schultz

This move seemed like it was to open up a spot for Martinek, which is what the Islanders wanted to do, although there’s a strong argument that Peter Regin could easily be sent through waivers. Regin hasn’t played since January 6, sitting out the last four games.

However, given Snow’s quote above the team was obviously looking at Strome getting playing time over the Olympic break.

Strome had four points in 15 games and seems to have played well in his appearances. He backchecked noticably (to me, at least) on a number of occasions and was credited for 16 hits in 15 games, so it wasn’t as though he wasn’t physical at all.

While 4 points in 15 games isn’t stunning, Strome’s possession numbers were among the best on the team. Strome was fourth on the team in Fenwick at 50.9%. This number is the same as Corsi, except it removes blocked shots from the totals. It assumes that blocked shots are a skill that some players or teams may be better at. So, Strome is the fourth best Islander at getting non-blocked shot attempts for his team.

But, more than anything, the Islanders were successful with Strome on the ice. The team was 8-4-2 in the 15 games that Strome played.

Hopefully, this is a temporary move. Strome hasn’t been particularly over matched or bad at the NHL level.

Also, one other note, is that Calvin de Haan and Matt Donovan are also eligible to head to the AHL for the Olympic break. To do so by the rules Staple tweeted above, the Islanders would have to send them down the night prior to the outdoor game against the Rangers. Is that in the plans, too?

Perhaps Strome was sent down due to they have a home, and home with the Flyers coming up, and didn't want Ryan to get his face pushed in ruining his pretty boy face, we all know how they get their panties soiled when they go against larger teams, that play a physical style and adding Martinek is not the answer as he is just another stringbean, that can't play his position, and really never could play it satisfactory.

As defenders, I would definitely give DeHaan and Donovan a break to keep them fresh for 2nd half.

Polka is way ahead of Reinhardt. We could use Polka now!

@orange2327  I agree ,I think ,didnt look it up it Reinhardt is something like 2-9 total 11 points for  his Jr team this year. For a   almost 20 year old playing against mostly 17-18- year old that is not killing it.Where take for example  Olllie Mattaa makes the  big team Pittsburgh first try ,then make Finnish Adult not juniors Olympic team. He was drafted around 13th same year as Reinhardt.

Can't a week go by without this team making a controversial move that has everyone scratching their heads in disbelief?

I don't know about this one! For starters, he really should've been paired with Nelson right from the start as they've proven to have great chemistry in the AHL. Not sure what they were thinking not to even give them a fair shake and see what they could do. Could've at least kept him up until the outdoor game was over. Kills me that Regin will be in the lineup on a nightly basis now until at least the break!

On another note, Oilers just traded for Ben Scrivens and only gave up a 3rd round pick.

Has a 1.97 GAA and .931 save percentage this season.

Not sure where Garth was hiding on this one. Would've been a great pickup

I don't understand why everyone is freaking out. He'll be back after the Olympics. I'm sure Strome is fine with this.

I also don't understand how everyone is worried that he's playing on the third line. To me, the second and third lines are about interchangeable. I don't see how it has to be such a hierarchy. Again, I'm sure Strome is fine with playing on the third line too.

OK after learning this I'm not as upset. The NHL sent a notice to all teams stipulating that if a player plays more than 15 games in the NHL he may not be loaned to the AHL during the Olympic break. Well see Strome for after the break..

@truth77 Another issue may be that our AHL coaching and player development staff is not as good as it should be. I am aware the Reinhardt did not go through BP and just may not, he'll come straight to the NHL, but many other prospects just don't seem to develop as well as prospects on other teams.

shlo
shlo

@truth77  That shows you that even Central Scouting can miss with prospects in term of development. I did not check it but I am pretty sure that Ollie Mattaa was  not ranked as high as Reinhardt.

Before you anoint him the next Patrick Roy, lets see what his numbers look like in a couple of months playing with the Oilers.

@realhlywd I actually suggested that a few weeks ago, LA, Washington and Anaheim all have three solid goalies in there system, if anything Scrivens would have been a good depth move for the Isles. But hey Garth knows best

@mitchfritz kid played 15 career games and your already throwing him to the curb? really? the islanders got burned by bringing bailey right to the nhl and snow doesnt want to make the same mistake. and clowns like you bash him for rushing guys then bash him for trying to develop them. make up your mind do you want them brought directly to the nhl or do you want them developed. because you seem to complain about it either way.

orange2327
orange2327

Excellent post Mitch cannot argue with the thesis of your argument!! Problem with you is that you worry the likes of rmreturns/don22 who are content in their Wang built domicile of mediocrity!!

Don22
Don22

@kevinpt Because that's their MO Kevin.  When the day comes when the ownership/GM/Coach changes, they will still find something to complain about.  What is worse is how they flip flop.  DeHaan was a bust, but now he is great.  Strome needs to be here, but now he sucks.  Bring up Donovan.  He stinks.  Why isn't he playing.  Bring up Ness.  He deserves to be here.  Get rid of Ness, he's tiny and sucks.

When Strome comes back and when he starts producing, I don't want to see these guys saying how good he is doing.  I don't want to read "well, I thought he sucks, but I admit I was wrong".  No, if you are going to preach about how much you know and decry anyone that dare disagree with you, then stick to your guns.  You can't root for a player when it suits you.

Sorry man.  I am just so pissed right now.  I have guys mentioning me in their posts like I am some sort of idiot because I dare say it's not a huge deal that Strome is sent down for a bit.  I'm just tired of it.

dzruggie

@mitchfritz YOu really make no sense at all.  Unbelievably you feel there is a conspiracy to ruin a pick.  Nothing to do with Hamonic possibly out with a concussion and the need to carry another D...just ignore the fact that they want him playing during the break, is that a bad thing?  Is possibly going back down and applying what he just learned, master it and come back better not even cross your mind?  No - it is the company line conspiracy.  Really???

Isleguy27
Isleguy27

@mitchfritz I'll mark those words and will be posting back to you in the near future sir!

Don22
Don22

@mitchfritzWhy do you care Mitch?  You were just saying how bad he was doing.  What is wrong with wanting to get him more minutes?

I'm marking your words, and when Strome does come up and play to his capability, I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Forget shills Mitch.  You are a typical armchair GM/Coach/Whatever that thinks he knows better than people who actually are with the team day in and day out and know their players.  I'm so sick of it.

Tomorrow Garth will say the sky is blue and will adamantly deny he is right and say it is part of a coverup.

@mitchfritz  What more do you want from the guy for crying out loud he was leading the AHL in scoring as a rookie before he was called up to the islanders. Lets give the guy a chance before we throw him under the bus.

@victor pereira @realhlywd  I wonder what it would take to get Frederick Anderson in a trade from Anaheim. He looks like the real deal and he's only 24 years old.   Since Anaheim has 3 goaltenders he might be available.

Don22
Don22

@orange2327 WTF Orange?  You guys are the same guys that were labeling DeHaan a bust because he hasn't done anything and now that he is finally up he is a hockey god.  You couldn't wait until Strome came up and now he's garbage.  You flip flop like the wind.  The team goes on a win streak and all is good.  The team loses a game and you are back to everyone is crap.  In my opinion, Strome is a very good talent that probably still should have stayed at the AHL for one more season.  When the day comes that he does play regularly on the team and does well, I don't want to see any comments from you guys saying how great he is doing.  Stop flip flopping on players.

You're right.  I'm content with  mediocrity.  I love losing.  It fuels me.  Actually, I love this hockey team but I'm smart enough to know it's a game and doesn't define my life.  I long for the day when they are good again and I am hopeful that it will be soon.  I don't like how things have been going with this team.  I don't agree with all that Wang has done, but I understand it.  I don't agree with everything Garth has done, but I'm smart enough to know that I'm not a GM.  I'm not with this team every day and I don't know the players like they do.  I leave that up to them and root for my team.  But you guys just can't wrap your heads around that.  You can't conceive the idea that someone who does not unilaterally disagree with everything Wang/Garth/Cap can actually be a fan.

Don't let it get to you. And you forgot to mention the biggest flip flop of all:

Last yr: Okposo sucks, we need to trade him or waive him now, he shouldn't be on this team.

This year - Okposo is a beast, I can't believe he was left off the USA team.

@rmreturns If he's so good he's should be able transfer half that production to the NHL he hasn't been able to. He was brought up to score and he hasn't done that.

@rmreturns  RM is almost 6PM and all the negative Islander fans are just about ready to come out. I was watching that 2011 NHL draft and i thought the Islanders were going to pick Sean Couturier or Dougie Hamilton but when the Islanders selected Ryan strome i remember Bob McKenzie raving about the pick of Ryan Strome.  All i know is John Tavares speaks very highly of Strome and i think he knows a little bit about hockey.

jepliberty

@rmreturns

What's your problem pal? You begin by insulting me and then you have a problem with me? You're the guy who thinks he is the all and powerful OZ, putting many postors down because you disagree with their comments, put a sock in it, and stop sticking your nose in everytime. PS I read your posts and many of them are not only foolish, but half witted as well, with your line picks, and moves that should occur by management, so go call Garth and ask for a job.

mrcisback
mrcisback

@Lyle Odelein  And i remember Patrick Stefan was supposed to be a franchise player similar to Tavares and he turned out to be basically a bust with concussion problems. I think Strome will be a 60 to 70 point player with in 2 years.

Isleguy27
Isleguy27

What a crock Mitch. A top 5 should provide instant impact. Look through history and other draft picks that never became impact players or even NHL regulars.

Al Montoya: no. 6 overall (Rangers) 2004

Nikita Filatov: no. 6 (Blue Jackets) 2008

Patrik Stefan: no. 1 (Thrashers) 1999

Thomas Hickey: no. 4 (Kings) 2007

Alexander Daigle: no. 1 (Senators) 1993

Alexandre Volchkov: no. 4 (Washington) 1996

Alexander Svitov: no. 3 (Lightning) 2001

@mrcisback It all depends what happens with Hiller, If they move him before the deadline i can't see them trading Anderson. Viktor Fasth  could also be a nice option. Personally I would target Holtby in Washington.

@mitchfritz @Joey Ferguson  no slow to develop means slow to develop. he can manage at one level but have a hard time adjusting to the next level.  saying that someone is slow to develop means slow to reach there potential in the nhl shows you are clueless. there are steps in the development in players. thats why there are different levels they go through before playing in the nhl. he played 15 games. that isnt much of a chance to adjust considering he is playing with 3rd line talent. strome is a great talent he just doesnt have the line mates to show it right now and you are already saying he is trash? really? you are clueless.

@mitchfritz @mrcisback they want him playing during the olympic break which i see as a decent reason to send him back to bp. hell it takes some guys time to adjust to the nhl level not everyone can come up and hit it off.
