The Morning Skate: Do You Root for ‘New York’?, False Sale Rumor

Kevin Schultz

You’ve probably had the conversation over the last week or at least pondered the idea. Do you support the Rangers in the Finals because they’re from New York?

My hunch is that the answer for the vast majority of people reading this blog is, ‘hell no‘, yours truly included.

When you get Local Sports Team into Important Sports Territory such as the Stanley Cup Final, it attracts a lot of attention and a lot of people who don’t usually follow the sport. And to be fair, if you’re not invested in the cross-town rival, it makes sense to support the locals. But if you’re on the other side — in this case Islander County — it’s weird to have people not understand that no thanks, I’m rooting for the Kings this week.

It depends a bit on the sport, too. As a Jets fan I tend to be indifferent towards the Giants since they usually only play in pre-season, but I’m also not a football super fan. In baseball, there’s been no love at least since Interleague play started and the basketball rivalry has gotten heated lately (and the two basketball owners kind of hilariously hate each other).

At LHH, Dan Saraceni goes into detail:

Not everyone spends their day and their life surrounded by sports, sports fans and sports writing. But you don’t have to get it. Only two colleagues – my Mets fan boss and a Yankees fan IT guy – understood completely where I was coming from when I said, “Hell no, I’m not rooting for the Rangers.”

When a league you’ve followed all season gets down to four or two teams, it’s natural to consciously or subconsciously pull for one team over another. I’m sure there are Islanders fans who genuinely enjoy or respect the Rangers and wouldn’t mind if they won, just as I’m sure a good portion of the state of California wants the Kings to crash and burn. The possibilities are endless. That’s the beauty of sport.

But standing around a water cooler trying to explain, “I don’t like these guys because I just don’t” can be exhausting. This is a primal emotional response that is often tied to a lifetime’s worth of built-up hatred, personal history and anxiety. It’s like explaining why water is wet.

So, out of scientific curiosity as to how the general internet populace feels, here’s a quick poll:

OK, maybe that poll is a bit biased.

In Calgary, Brian Burke — yes, he’s there now as President of Hockey Ops — took shots at both his team’s and the Islanders’ arena.

“An update on our new home? You know what? We need a new building. Obviously, everyone knows that,” said Burke, president of hockey operations for the Flames, responding to a question from the audience. “We have the finest state-of-the-art 1988 building in the (National Hockey League).”

The Scotiabank Saddledome, headquarters to the Flames, was built in 1983.

The rink seats 19,289.

“You know what’s embarrassing?” said Burke. “There is one building worse than ours. Has anyone been there? Islanders (who play out of dilapidated Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum). So we don’t actually have the worst building in the National Hockey League. But we have a state-of-the-art 1988 building.”

But the joke’s on Burke and the Flames (and he likely knows as much) because after this year the Flames will be playing in the worst building in the NHL, Brooklyn sight-lines be damned. The full story here is that Burke is watching his cross-province rivals in Edmonton get a new arena deal that will see the Oilers and their No. 1 picks move into a new arena in 2016, while the Flames are in a 25-year old barn that was flooded out about a year ago with no visible movement on the issue.

Whether you like the move or not, it will be nice to know the Islanders aren’t in the worst arena in the league anymore, a title they’ve held now for quite some time.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, right?

On Friday, things got a little wacky when Lou Pellegrino, a producer NBC Sports, was going on and on about an Islanders sale being done and to be announced after the final. The tweets are now deleted, as well as the whole account, but it started with this one which we can still see thanks to the magic of topsy.com (the internet never forgets, remember that):

Pellegrino went on talking back and forth to fans for a while…

Before issuing one of the worst “I was hacked!” excuses in Twitter history thus far…

Screen Shot 2014-06-08 at 10.34.25 PM

And so here we are, with random rumors and no solid news. But there’s been a lot of smoke, a lot of people who seem to know something’s up or something’s going on.

Charles Wang is, as we all know, reviewing offers and since that’s the case it makes sense that people would either make things up because they hear something from someone and it gets a little mixed up in a telephone game type of scenario or, maybe, for the attention. Or maybe there’s a bit of truth in this and a bit of truth in that and they are just waiting for the Finals to end before announcing it. We’ll have to wait and see…

Also: The Kings effectively trolled New York with a Will Ferrell ad near MSG… Justin Bourne on the Islanders and “building a team nobody wants to play for“…

And finally… Someone help out Target, please.

I'm hoping for a LA sweep so we Isles fans can celebrate the news of Wang getting the hell away from the team. Once that happens hopefully more news of heads rolling will follow immediately after sale.

OK, we've beet this dead horse for the past 5 days! How about a draft preview, or some insights on what the Isles will do as we hopefully watch the Rags be eliminated!

I thought they were going to announce the sale of the team after the finals, they might as well do it now because its all but over, bwahahaha....seriously, im feeling so relieved that the rangers wont win the cup, feeling alive again, .like " I got a shot of B 12"

"Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com reports the Boston Bruins have started contract negotiations with veteran forward Jarome Iginla. Iginla finished the regular season tied for the Bruins lead in goals and led the Bruins in playoff goals with five. According to Haggerty, the Bruins are pushing to re-sign to the 36-year-old to a contract very similar to his one-year 2013-2014 deal, which paid him $1.8 million."

Hey Wang, when you invest and Win, you actually get discounts!!!

" No negotiations between #Islanders and Dan Boyle will take place unless he decides he wants to play there. Decision expected this week."

This is why we should have gotten a goalie last yr, this yr might be too late.  Hopefully Boyle can look past our dismal 2013-14 season and see a bright future with him in it.

Jason Brought cites a tweet from Andy Strickland claiming there won’t be contract talks between Boyle and the Islanders unless he decides he wants to play for them. The decision could come this week. Strickland believes the chances are “very slim to none” Boyle signs with them, as at this stage of his career he wants to play for a winner.

Breathing a little easier now that the Rags are 1 game from elimination! My rooting for the Kings aside, the stellar coaching in this series has been very noticeable. AV has done a great job adjusting on the fly, as has DS, after he said they will make defensive adjustments in game 3, and by golly...they sure did! Makes me sad when I think of Cappy and how game after game he never changes what everyone can see is very wrong. Aside from a "players battle level" he has no answers.....unfortunately, neither does Weight. I wonder what the Isles record would be with a solid coaching staff??

This might be the only chance the Rangers have to win the Stanley cup for a long time. Martin St Louis is going to be 39, Brad Richards is going to be 34 and Lundqvist is 32 going on 33. Its not like they have some top offensive prospects in the system coming up any time soon. A matter of fact there prospects are rated close to the bottom of the league. No 1st round pick in 2014 and 2015 won't help either.

@dinbigd I hear ya, but I still wouldn't mind the Rags winning a game or 2 just to see some more good hockey.  That's said, not crying if the Rags lose tonight.

@erika I agree Erika. I think Boyle is going to tell the Islanders no any day now. All of the so called hockey experts are predicting that will happen. I'm just happy that we at least secured Halak.

@orange2327 i dont want anything to do with ovi.  hes very overrated.  gets half of his points on the powerplay and shoots 10 times a game, hence his high point total.  hes far from a team player and if you really want to talk about playing only one zone, thats exactly what ovechkin does.  and ovechkin hasnt exactly proven to be a winner either, so why does he make us one exactly?

since72

@orange2327 51 goals and a - 35.  No thanks.  I'll keep our guys.  He will destroy the chemistry.

@willymayshays I am pretty sure that his agent is doing his due diligence to see what his market price should be and if a "contender" is interested and at what price. We'll know soon enough.

jmoney93
jmoney93

@puckznpadz what winners exactly does he plan on playing for, all the true contenders are good on the blue line. He plans on playing for a team with a chance of making the playoffs, but all the cup favorites next season already have solid D cores

willymayshays

@puckznpadz

We are proven losers, and Wang probably wonders why no FA wants to come here.

Just like he wonders why fans don't pay to see his product, AND how he thinks the salary (Wangs salary Cap) is low because WE (!) don't invest enough into the team.

Saw that, at least he's gonna let us know in a reasonable timeframe if he will sign or not.

@mrcisback As much as I would LOVE to agree with you...I can't. Once the so called "star"players like Richards and Nash are bought out, They will be left with the players that  have gotten them this far, such as McDonough, zuccarello, Kreider, and of course...the Queen. And then they will spend more money on whoever the player dujour is that year!....But God,  it's good to see Lundquist loose!

firecappy
firecappy

@mrcisback Not to mention that they had an easy road.  A backup goalie for the first 3 games, then Fleury, then the back ups back up but the East is wide open once you get past Boston so they could be back again with a couple of moves.

David Sisler
David Sisler

@mrcisback Rangers have a lot of money (some of it corporate welfare), will spend and players like Nash, St Louis, Gaborik and Richards are willing to accept it. It hasn't worked out in a lot of championships but there is always the possibility they could suddenly put it together like the Boston Red Sox in the last decade.

Counter: The entire rest of the team is fairly young.

@orange2327

That's because the East has the Islanders that bring down the overrall strength of the east.

@Don22 no! thats what i thought when they were playing the pens and then they went on a roll.  need this to end asap!

@since72 @orange2327 I really hoped i missed the joke on NOT wanting Ovechkin...I would give  them anyone short or JT and Halak.  For get the fact that we would add a scorer that can net 50+ in a time that you earn 2+MM for scoring 20. You would be taking away a rival's (yes anyone in our conference is our rival now) best player.  Why didn't you call for JT's head in 2011 when he had 29 G and -16???

And Boyle will listen to the Islanders! Might not sign but i think we have a good chance.

@orange2327- B12 could be his flight number next year on his annual exodus..

@shlo I don't think that any team an legally indicate interest or not at this point.  That would be tampering with another team's player, no?

since72
since72

@jmoney93 He probably would get a shot with a wannabe cup contender.  Detroit or Tampa has been mentioned.  If he doesn't want to sign here, maybe we can get the pick back from one of those guys.  Not a big deal otherwise.  He may need to find out first hand that he isn't going to get offers from the Bruins or the Kings.  The Sharks have already said no to his 2 year request.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@Dan Coscino they have a lot of signing of free agents and RFA. a lot of people due for significant raises too.

Don22
Don22

@slapshot18_rs @Don22 LOL.  2 differences.  The Kings are not the Pens and Quick is not MAF.  The Kings are not capable of losing 4 in a row at this point.

since72
since72

@topshelf I'm never going to call for JT's head and neither are you.  Ovi is not in JT's class.  With the Islanders D in 2011, I think you are skewing his -16 to suit your arguement.  Nice try.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@topshelf because JT was 20 years old.

ovechkin is a terrible team player. yes hes as dynamic a player as they come, but when he wasnt playing with backstrom his numbers took a HUGE hit.  he gets all his points on the pp.  hes an incredible player at certain aspects of the game, and hes awful at others.

since72
since72

@wangbegone Chemistry meaning I believe that the Islanders are a tight team.  Vanek alluded to it while he was here.  The guys seem to like each other.  I know that is not equal to a winning team, just a good environment.

Don22
Don22

@orange2327 How can you make that comment after you complained about trading away the chemistry between MM and JT?  Either it's important or it's not.

Now for your hypothetical - I'd have to give that some serious thought.  But I think in the end I probably wouldn't do it.  I'd be worried about giving up so much for a dynamic goal scorer who could decide to pull a Kovachuk at any moment.

since72

@orange2327 If you think that playoffs = chemistry, then there is no chemistry.  Ovetchkin would be a mistake IMHO.  But glad you posted this as it keeps the site alive!

@since72 @shlo I believe their is a window where FAs can be approached however I do not know when.  We know it is a fact because clearly there are always big signings at 12:01 on 7/1 year after year.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

haha very true - would just scare the hell out of me if they ended up winning two in a row or something.  if it were any team other than NYR, id be rooting for a 7 game series.

@slapshot18_rs I want a sweep just for the humiliation factor, you overachieved you really don't belong here.

(also because I predicted a sweep, hate to be wrong).

@wangbegone No.  I just check in from time to time, same as you do.  It is slow at times like this and glad a few of us are posting.  Nothing more.
