The Morning Skate: More Ex-Isles Coaching Changes

Kevin Schultz

Kirk Muller’s been fired, Ron Hextall’s been hired and yesterday in Toronto there were some more coaching changes. Former Islanders head coach Scott Gordon and former Islanders assistant Greg Cronin were both let go by the Maple Leafs.

It’s a weird situation in Toronto where, after two-plus seasons at the helm, Carlyle will finally be able to pick his own assistant coaches. Both Gordon and Cronin were assistants to the previous coach Ron Wilson. But the whole thing irks Maple Leafs fans even more because Carlyle is allowed to stay on as a coach who is actively coaching his team to put less shots towards the net. I’m not sure what hockey universe he’s living in where that’s actually a viable strategy but between that and the other items such as the falling out with James Reimer, misuse of players like JM Liles and Mikhail Grabovski, who have gone on to success elsewhere, it’s all too much for Leafs fans.

Pension Plan Puppets, a great Leafs blog, is frustrated along with the rest of Leafs twitter. They led their Carlyle story with a foreboding picture of Connor McDavid, projected first overall pick in next year’s draft. So that’s where the expectations are at. And at least one fan in Toronto now sees the situation as ‘hey guys, we have no business making fun of the Islanders’ kind of dire.

On Long Island, things are generally quiet. Hey, maybe Scott Gordon wants to come back as an assistant? (Nope). In other next year’s draft news, Connor McDavid was selected by a KHL team in this year’s KHL draft.
Erie Otters sensation Connor McDavid was selected by Medvescak Zagreb in the second round of the Russian league’s entry draft, becoming the latest high profile NHL prospect to get picked up in this process. He just finished a phenomenal season in the Ontario League, scoring 28 goals and 99 points in 56 regular season games and 19 points in 14 playoff games.

But will he ever play for Zagreb? Likely not.

At the Garden, it’s Rangers Elimination Day 2014 Part 2. The first one didn’t go so well, hopefully there will be a better result this time around.

At the World Championships, Frans Nielsen is not playing as he is suffering from a wrist injury:

The squad in Minsk will need all the offensive help it can get, as Frans Nielsen of the New York Islanders, Denmark’s leading NHL scorer with 58 points, has been ruled out with a wrist injury.

 I got news for you if Snow doesn't get Halak signed then he's going to get lambasted on this web site. For the life of me i can't understand why he isn't signed yet. Doesn't Snow realize by now that poker is not one of his strong points.

I know I posted that I thought Garth would get Halak deal done but w/ no news on that I'm starting to lean the other way.You would think that if Isles were serious about signing him it would've happened already.After all NY is NY.There's not much to have to sell him on.It has everything.I'm getting the feeling Garth hasn't even made an offer yet.Even more concerned that it will be a lowball offer when & if it happens.

Its the off season so I will wait till next year .The only thing I will comment on is when they traded for the rights of Halak its should have been trade and sign just like it should have been for Vanek. But I will leave it at that.Hopefully they will sign Him.I got my Large bottle of Tums 3 weeks ago for the Mets season, it is half finished. This is what you get when you make these the Teams the Teams you vote for.Late 3rd Period giveaways and blown saves, prescription for Acid Reflux Disease.

Why do folks around here take potshots at the Leafs for keeping Carlyle as coach or potshots at the Flyers for signing Streit for too long or AMAC for too much?

The Isles should have such problems as spending too much money on the blue line or sticking with a Stanley Cup-winning head coach for too long. Instead, they have stuck with AHL playoff appearance-having head coach for far longer and did absolutely nothing to replace Streit (and then wondered why the team took a giant step backward).

Brock nelson scores the first team USA  goal against Belarus with uncle Pete behind the bench , to bad he signed with Nashville preds

Cappy is not a good coach period. Give last years team to a better coach and they are an 8th seed. Cappy got us into the playoffs in 2013 solely on a short schedule they would have missed the post season in an 82 game schedule.

this team is dead in the water. stagnant, in quicksand, in bondage are some adjectives that you can use to describe a team with wang/snow in charge. and the worse thing is that another horrific season next year will result in another team benifeting. so snow has managed to not only put this team and keep this team on the bottom by not even giving his team a chance to benefit from being such a horrible team

It's getting close to two weeks since I was told the announcement could come in weeks not months. I guess you could stretch that to 3 weeks but after that we are in a month or more. Just so anxious to see Wang gone.

I was going to post unbelievable but it IS Wang.

Coaches and GMs getting fired all around the NHL, usually for poor results.

Only when you're a coach or GM for the Islanders do you NOT get fired for poor performance.

@mrcisback  You're going to give yourself and migraine worrying so much. Snow gets lambasted on this site daily, it won't be any different. Snow has another 3 weeks to sign Halak and then to make a decision on the 5th overall pick.

@Chris R

With Snow, It seems like it takes 4 or 5 years to sign a player for 4 or 5 years.

Holey daytime DRAMA!!   Could you be anymore dramatic???

The wingers are young and getting better...

the defense is young and getting better...

We have a very good goalie within reach.

I don't want to hear about McDavid, people are acting like we already had him and Snow traded him away.  This team has too much young talent to be "stagnant"!

@puckdad99

Rebuilding requires development and Cappy is not the guy I'd pick, but he is inexpensive.  I don't think he is much of a positive, but I don't think he is a crazy coach that is going to create serious issues with a certain young player.   Cappy is not a good coach IMO, but he is not terrible.

Terrible is the word that describes Snows last yr.   Unfortunately, we have no choice but to see if he can do much better next yr.  The good thing, if you want to see it, is that we haven't traded away all our young talent for quick fixes AND we are not burdened with any really bad contracts.

@Isleguy27 @mrcisback   Actually he has until June-30th to sign Halak. July-1st he becomes an unrestricted free agent. I'm used to migraines i have two daughters. Why do other teams get things done ASAP and it takes the Islanders forever. Philadelphia trades for Amac and sign him to a new contract almost immediately. Halak is interested in signing with the Islanders and his agent says he's looking for around 4 million a year. Snow should have had that contract done in a couple of hours. I know Snow gets lambasted on a daily basis but can you understand why. Why then trade for Halak if your not prepared to give him the contract he wants.

@willymayshays @j_spikett willy, sorry but phrases like "within reach" , "getting better", should not still be used 8 years into a rebuild, its unacceptable

j_spikett
j_spikett

@willymayshays @j_spikett  the only accurate thing you said is that the players that snow drafted are still young. but these are snow's picks so to say these players will amount to anything is a reach. to say that this team is a playoff team is a huge reach. other teams that were below this team will get better before this team will. snow has not instilled or shown any ability to build a playoff team. he has shown an ability to produce a bottom 5 team. the odds are very strong this team or the team that stole their draft picks will be in strong position to get mcdavid

@willymayshays @camb33

Every summer we hear from the apologists that they will reserve judgment until Snow does...(fill in the blank every summer since 2006)...now its wait until he signs Halak and adds a dman...riiiiight keep in drinking the kool aid and staying far from reality...proof is in the pudding our team has a culture where losing is accepted and rewarded instead of the other way around...Snow is not good enough to wooo nhl caliber free agents to the ISles...track record says Halak does not sign here, its up to Snow to buck his own trend and prove us wrong..8 yrs into a rebuild, how much longer are you guys willing to give him the benefit of the doubt...and stop the belief that Snow is slowly building the sequel to the dynasty years.

willymayshays

@camb33

Camb, I don't think timing precludes the usage of such statements.

I think we are getting better and I think Halak will be signed.

You know what's funny though...  Our  "rebuild" was really just drafting and not spending money.

Buffalo is actually rebuilding.  They have traded some assets and are going to be able to turn things around much faster.

@willymayshays @orange2327  Remember Willy Colorado finished 29th in the league in 2012-13 and was predicted by the so called experts to finish at the bottom or close to the bottom of the league this year. The same thing with Tampa. They finished 28th in the 2012-13 season and turned it completely around. I'll reserve my opinions about the Islanders until we hopefully get Halak signed and see what other trades/moves Snow does. People seem to forget we have a super star named John Tavares who's only going to get better. Islander fans on this web site have to understand there are Ranger fans who come on this web site just to bust balls. I have a friend who is a Ranger fan who comes on this web site to do just that and he won't tell me who his screen name is so i know its happening. I told him are you the guy who wears the mask and he said i'm definitely not that guy.

@Christopher Patrick @willymayshays  I don't think what the person putting the jet together earns should have anything to do with it, but rather if that person takes pride in what they do and has the knowledge to do their job the fullest, and to complete the project properly. I don't know that Capuano is the right coach for the group of players in Long Island, but he is the guy who is currently in charge of the bench...like it or not.
