Vanek Talks Isles in Return to Buffalo

Kevin Schultz

Last night the Montreal Canadiens visited the Buffalo Sabres in what was Thomas Vanek’s first return to Buffalo following his trade from the Sabres to the Islanders in October. The Habs won 2-0 in regulation, pushing them two points closer to the playoffs and the Islanders that much closer to the conditional pick they acquired in the deal that sent Vanek to Montreal.

Prior to the game, the Buffalo News’ John Vogl caught up with Vanek in what was a pretty candid interview even by Vanek’s usually somewhat open standards. And yes, they did talk about the Islanders. The entire article and audio of the interview are here, so check that out. The most relevant portions are below.

First off, here’s Vanek on why he wanted to leave the Sabres:

“I just asked what direction this team was going in,” Vanek said this evening. “No one really had an answer. That’s when I kind of made up my mind that July 1 is probably a goal of mine.”

So, free agency on July 1st was something that came to mind early for him.

Vanek also expressed regret that the Sabres teams of the mid-00s didn’t go further. With Chris Drury and Daniel Briere he felt the team was this close to something bigger — which is probably right — but those players left and were never replaced.

And on the negotiations with the Islanders:

While Vanek loved his time and teammates in New York, his stint with the Islanders had an unfortunate moment for him. Intent on becoming a UFA, Vanek turned down a $50 million offer from the Isles, and the decision was leaked to the public.

“I don’t know what the right word for it is. Unnecessary, I guess,” Vanek said. “I don’t think it did good for both sides of us. At the end of the day, whoever came out with it, so be it. I had to answer the questions and move on.”

Vanek is referring to Newsday’s report on February 3 that stated he had turned down a large offer in the neighborhood of his current contract, which (publicly anyway) set the wheels in motion for the trade deadline.

There’s two sides to every story, of course. Here’s Arthur Staple’s response on Twitter last night:

And finally, Vanek on July 1 again and his time in NY after the contract offer:

“I think after that it was hard to focus, even though the guys in the room on the island were great. They understood it’s business. It’s nothing against them. It’s just I made up my mind a year ago that July 1 was a priority for myself.

Islanders are dead last in GA. Why is everyone talking about Vanek and Moulson? When Al Arbor took over, he focused on D and reduced GA by 100 in one season. That is the biggest problem with this team. Use the kids on offense and focus on D and Goaltending this off-season.

Really can't blame vanek... Who wants to play for a team that is plaqued by the worst sports ownership in pro sports and inexperienced Mickey Mouse back office and coaches.

A woman was in bed with her lover when she heard her husband opening the front door.

"Hurry!" she said, "Stand in the corner." She quickly rubbed baby oil all over him and then she dusted him with talcum powder.
"Don't move until I tell you to." she whispered. "Just pretend you're a statue."
"What's this, honey?" the husband asked as he entered the room.
"Oh, it's just a statue." she replied nonchalantly. "The Smiths bought one for their bedroom. I liked the idea so much, I got one for us, too." No more was said about the"statue".
Later that night when they went to sleep. Around two in the morning the husband got out of bed, went into the kitchen, and returned with a sandwich and a glass of milk.
"Here." he said to the 'statue'. "Eat this. I stood like an idiot at the Smiths for three days and nobody offered me so much as a glass of water."

Vanek is way better than Moulson. It is no coincidence that KO has shattered his career high in points and JT was on pace to do so as well while playing more than half a season with Vanek. Hopefully the Isles can bring him back. That almost never works out but he ain't exactly lighting it up in Montreal right now. Thus, maybe playing on the left side of JT and KO for the next few seasons could be looking pretty good to him right now  after all.

For all the longwinded, short sighted "I told you so" Marys out there.......get over it and get over yourselves. Garth made a move that ("Please Garth, make a move fore a winger/scorer for Tavares, any move will do") nearly everyone on this board clamored for. It didn't work out. If he didn"t make the move, the same "glass is half full/empty" people would have screamed that someone else got a player we should have tried for and cried out "why didn't Snow try harder to get him". It seems that the only people left on this board are NEVER happy with anything. If another "well respected" GM took a flyer on Vanek and lost in the same way, few would bat an eye and chalk it up to "thats the business chance you take in that situation". Did we lose more than we gained? Did we come out on the short end of the stick? Could different moves have been made? YES, YES and YES!! A fair offer was made to Vanek and he decided long ago (in Buffalo) to wait till free agency. Its BUSINESS. You can't blame the player for rolling the dice trying to get the most he can for his services. If every move made by every GM were perfect then every team would win the cup every year! Yeh right!

Kevin, Keaith and Christian....I love your stories and inside and insightful stories and information you get to us on a daily basis. My question to you guys is ....is there a way to promote more "discussion on the Islanders rather than rants about ownership and management all the time?

@Dan Coscino Don't want him back long term. That would be another Yashin contract, crippling us for years. I would give him the money, just not for the length he wants. Come on, no one argues his talent, but he is a huge defensive liability and takes way to many shifts off! Moulson can bury the puck and takes abuse in front of the net, and most importantly, the chemistry was just right! Give me Matty and sign a capable goalie!

madmike

@Dan Coscino Thomas Vanek has better hands than Matt Moulson.  He has better wheels.  He has a better shot.  Better release.  He's a better playmaker.  He's bigger and stronger than Moulson.  But Matt Moulson is a better hockey player than Thomas Vanek.  It's not even close.  Moulson actually has a pulse and works hard when he's on the ice.  I wouldn't have made that original deal straight up.

bubbamac19
bubbamac19

@Dan Coscino Okposo began his turnaround last season and I think deserves most of the credit for his improvement as evidenced by his continued success without any of his previous line mates. Vanek's a different player, more polished than Moulson, but not as gutsy; in any event their results the last few years are almost identical and we managed to lose them both.

John Richards

Dude your theory is nonsense!! Without JT/moulson/vanek kyle is still producing!!

erika
erika

@william hensler Listen up dude, while you make some sense, the rest of your rant is a bit delusional. Yes, we did want a talented winger for Tavares, but not at the expense of another talented winger! All that is, is a lateral move with the new winger taking a month to jell, and as a result, effectively pulling us out of the playoff picture. As far as ownership, I can tell you that kindergarden children would make more logical hockey decisions. That, my friend is not according to me, it is the opinion of just about everyone in the hockey world! Why the hell do you think we are the laughing stock of the NHL? How come we cannot get decent free agents to sign here? Do you really think it's because we do lots of losing? Because there is Edmonton, that has had like what, 4 #1 picks in a damn row and are still below us in the standings. There is also the Panthers, and about 4 other teams that actually lose much more than we do, but amazingly, players still want to go there! I remember Horton, one of the bigger FA's last July, coveting the Blue Jackets!  HMMM, must be the arena!.

I do agree with you that Vanek made up his mind while he was in Buffalo, that he will explore Free agency. Wang knew it. Garth knew it. The whole damn world knew it, and yet...look what Garth gave up for what everyone knew was a rental!.......There is NO COMPETENT GM that would give up that much for a rental......except GARTH (but, I did say competent)!!!

@william hensler    William i have to say i never really read one of your posts before but you hit the nail right on the head with your excellent comments. I couldn't have said it more clearly. You have to understand "some" of the people who complain over and over again will never be happy no matter what happens with the islanders. I have more respect for the Islander fans opinions who have been watching the islanders since 1972-73 season over some 35 year old fan who's always trying to preach to us older ones.

madmike

@william hensler He's rolling the dice alright.  With his performance in the Olympics and now with the Habs, he'll be begging for that $50 million the Isles offered him.  I'm glad he rejected it.

@william hensler

Coliseum security confiscated all signs and paper bags...

Islanders play-by-play crew was instructed not to mention any protests by fans...

And now calls to censor, oh yeah, "promote" discussion you find acceptable?

Chuck Wang is not only a sociopath and alleged fraud, he's paranoid too.

Dan Coscino
Dan Coscino

@erika @Dan Coscino  Did everyone here skip the playoffs last year? Moulson was a nonfactor at even strength. He had 15 goals in 48 games in 2013 and has about 20 goals in 70 games this year. Each of those are far off a 30-goal pace. Meanwhile JT-KO-Vanek was the best line in hockey from about mid-December until the damn Olympics. There is no comparison. Snow overpaid to get Vanek and failed to recoup in dealing him away, but that doesn't change the fact that he is the most skilled winger the Isles have had in about 15 years.

Dan Coscino
Dan Coscino

@bubbamac19 @Dan Coscino  I didn't say KO's success was entirely due to Vanek, but that it is no coincidence. Moulson is a good goal-scorer and willing to go to the dirty areas and take a beating, but Vanek is just a much better setup man and can generate offense off the rush which fits this team a lot better than Moulson who is a "half court" player. The Isles want to run and gun when their big line is on the ice and Moulson couldn't keep up while Vanek can.

tag1

@erika   "Why the hell do you think we are the laughing stock of the NHL? How come we cannot get decent free agents to sign here?"

Because our psycho owner replaced a GM with a SC ring with his backup goalie.

@mrcisback

Thanks. I don't mind conversing with knowledgable and resaonable people. I certainly don't mind a difference of opinion. What I don't appreciate is all the nasty name calling and the brow beating to try to make you feel stupid. Its totally unneccesary to try and bait people into pointless arguments. There used to be alot of great posters here, but now not so much anymore. At least not worth responing to. I find its not so much what you say, it's how you say it. I have called for trades and coaching changes before, but never like the way its being done now. So thanks again for your commnt, I appreciae it.

william hensler
william hensler

@shamwow @william hensler

Things like that have been confiscated for ....well lets just 9/11. I dont want to "censor anything nor anyone. I just would like to see the topic other than ownership and managemnet once in a while. You know it true so like I said, you ain't saying anything new. I dont like wang all that much nor do I agree with all the moves that have been made.  I'm just tired of all the same old nastyness and same singular topic here ALL the time. Thats all. You can go back to your rants now.

tag1

@ejej  The Isles have given up the most goals in the NHL ej, this was a problem that SHOULD have been addressed last off season and wasn't and yet we shouldn't complain that snow the boy genius went out and used valuable assets to get someone who wasn't going to help us on the back end and wasn't going to stay here? Does sound a little like Charles doesn't he?

Discussion about the Isles includes management and ownership because it's bad it shouldn't be ignored.

erika
erika

@Dan Coscino @erikaAt least they DID make the playoffs with Moulson. We had Vanek the whole year. How did that work out for the team? Don't discount chemistry, Dan. It's like spending the rest of your life with a woman you don't like! Denis Potvin on XM radio: " This was a bad time for the Islanders to make a trade for a guy like that. They needed help on Defense, and in goal, they would probably be the first to tell you that"

I don't know how the hell half of you guys are STILL arguing that it was decent trade on Garth's part! I hated the trade, but I was big enough to say I wanted it to work, and was hoping I would be wrong. This trade had no business happening. It was a ridiculous move by a puppet GM who was told to get rid of MM and the contract he would command. To say, even now it was justifiable is as laughable as we have become to the NHL!.

Dan Coscino
Dan Coscino

@bubbamac19 @Dan Coscino  Moulson was playing less and less at even strength at the end of last season and in the playoff series against the Pens. The Isles hit upon a formula of skating and pressure against the bigger and slower Pens and it was working and Moulson simply was too slow to be a  part of it. Thus, when the Isles were playing their best, he was a 3rd liner. Moulson was a good player on this team for 4+ seasons, but he clearly no longer fit in with the team's plans and there was no way there going to give him a 5 year/$25 million deal that he will be seeking (and probably will get, too).

bubbamac19
bubbamac19

@Dan Coscino Moulson couldn't keep up? To the tune of multiple 30 goal seasons? 7 goals in 11 games this year?

Let's agree that Vanek is better. How much better? 5 goals a year? 10? Is that worth Moulson and two picks? Vanek's added ability didn't show itself but for 6 weeks. I don't like Vanek's "motor" - I'd rather have the blue collar Moulson. If it was Vanek 8 years ago, then I agree. Hopefully Anders Lee renders the whole thing moot for us Dan.

madmike
madmike

Connor McDavid isn't draft eligible until next year.  Surely, the Isles will give up this year's first round pick, especially since there is talk of changing the lottery format next year.

@rmreturns "your fascination with ignoring the forest to see a tree continues to impress. Forbes magazine has the isles losing money every year, even with cable TV money, even with enhanced revenue sharing."

And you refuse to put the blame where it belongs, on wang. For the 100000000 time you don't hire your backup goalie as GM and expect success, both on the ice and in the wallet, that would be like the NY Giants firing their GM and hiring their backup Quarterback as GM..

"Unless I own Forbes, and made that stuff up. Why not just argue the arena isn't old, the lease deal isn't bad, and Kate Murray is the patron saint of common sense."

Again for the 10000000 time the lease was modified years ago by Suozzi, in wang's favor, no one ever said the arena isn't old, and I live in the TOH and I can tell you FACTUALLY that the TOH operates in the black compared to the Isles who operate in the red because of incompetent ownership and management and I can also tell you my TOH taxes went DOWN this year so if you're asking me who I would rather run my business Murray or wang I'll take Murray. Go read up on what's going on in Glendale with the Coyotes and their new arena it's not pretty. The LHP was too big and wang was never coming up with 4 BILLION to build it and he was never going to be able to rent or sell all that real estate he wanted to build in this real estate market.

"As if winning a playoff series would remove all of the red ink. I admire your ability to ignore fiscal reality... You must love our sitting president."

It's you Chuckles who makes excuses for incompetence over and over again on here so it's you who must love our sitting President.

@rmreturns  follow the money_ Cable, NHL revenue sharing, Barclays cash."

You seem to like to mention cable money for the future but you won't acknowledge how much cable money he has collected since he bought the team, probably over 200 million, you think that money has cut his losses somewhat?

"Snow needs a goaltender- he will buy one."

Really? He's needed one since the end of last season and hasn't gotten one. You give a GM like Lou in Jersey the benefit of the doubt when it comes to things like this because of his winning track record, snow gets no benefit of the doubt because his track record is horrible.

Here's some math for you wang 14 Years as owner ZERO playoff victories + snow 8 YEARS as GM ZERO playoff victories = ZERO.

Vicp73
Vicp73

@rmreturns  I would trade an entire draft class for Weber, but Murray is no Weber. And for you to mention Murray and Weber in the same sentence is just insulting. Didn't your boy Garth pick Reinhart two picks later? I mean you've anointed Griffin the next Potvin, so Murray would be the next Bobby Orr?

And as far as the Oilers go, people have been held accountable for those blunders. Steve Tambellini lost his job along with head coach Ralph Krueger . Only on the Island do you get rewarded for failure

Vicp73

@erika @Vicp73 @Sam Sam  Snow offered all their draft picks in the 2012 draft to Columbus for the no.2 overall pick (Ryan Murray). Google it Erica, hard to believe the Jackets didn't except that deal either. Both teams have been laughed at since

Why defend Garth?  Fans have every right and reason to revolt.  Too bad nothing will change.

Vicp73

EVERYONE in the hockey world laughs at Garth and his body of work, sportsnet analyst along with TSN analyst can't believe how this guy still has a job. Probably not true but who's fault is that that he hasn't made any money? Hire your unqualified backup goalie as GM what did he expect?

He's been drafting near the top of the draft for years, where is all the depth? Look at the Pens they got decimated with injuries this season and look where they are and this isn't the NBA you don't get by with a handful of players in this league, it's the depth and system that has gotten them by this season.

"Hockey is a business, and the Isles couldn't make any money. But since it wasn't you losing money, why consider that fact."

I know it's a business and it's professional sports it's YOU that is satisfied with just watching games that are "fun to watch" not me. Win some playoff series once in a while if you want to make some money.
