Vanek Trade Officially Complete as Habs Clinch

Kevin Schultz

Tuesday night in Washington the Capitals got blown out 5-0 by the Dallas Stars, which doesn’t usually mean much around here. However, that Capitals loss secured a playoff berth for the Montreal Canadiens (who also lost to Tampa tonight, for what that’s worth).

With the clinch of the playoffs for Montreal, it will seal the Thomas Vanek deadline day trade once and for all. Because of extra stipulations in the trade, the Islanders will get Montreal’s second round pick in the upcoming draft in exchange for the Islanders fifth round pick. The exchange was contingent on the Habs making the post-season.

Lets look at Snow's asset management over the last year.    Neiderrieter (5th overall and 3 years developing him) for Clutterbuck (3rd line winger at best who was a restricted free agent and there was no way Minnesota was resigning him).  Moulson (30% of the teams offensive production over the last 4 years), a 1st and a 2nd for Vanek (Who everyone knew wanted to go to Minnesota).  Vanek and a 5th for Collberg and a 2nd.

What we lost - Neiderrieter, Moulson a 1st, 2nd, and 5th rd pick

What we got - Clutterbuck, Collberg and a 2nd rd pick. (Worse than the 2nd we gave up.)

That is brutal asset management and is grounds for firing.  Let me also mention that Snow didn't consider Moulson part of the future of this franchise because he was unwilling to pay him $5 - $5.5 million a year yet he was willing to pay Clutterbuck $3.5 million a year to be a 3rd line grinder.  With the difficulties the Islanders have in getting talent to come here, it is inexcusable to not consider Moulson part of the future of this franchise.

Are we lucky he rejected our offer??.......I'd say yes

In my mind, the Vanek trade will not be officially complete until we have surrendered our number 1 pick to Buffalo.  Short of a lottery win, I say it should be done this year.  We look to be picking 4th or 5th otherwise and the players at that point are said to be more like mid 1st round picks this year.  Get this over with.  Too bitter a subject to be talking about next year.

Just for the record not 1 UFA was traded for a 1st round pick, just saying... Doesn't give anyone a pass as we are still siting without a goalie.

Yay! We get a 2nd round pick and a Montreal leftover player for Moulson, Vanek, PLUS a 1st, 2nd and 5th round pick. That's just great!

Lost in the plus side of getting that #2 from Montreal is still the fact that Snow could have had Emerson Etem and Anaheim's #1 for Vanek and thought he could do better...  Better means Collberg and Montreal's #2...  Does anyone really think that's better???

Trade Bailey + for Gardiner and Reimer. Trade this years first round pick regardless of position to Edmonton for Jordan Eberle. Include Grabner if necessary or even Donovan. Keep Nabby for backup. Sign veteran defensemen. Offer Vanek league maximum dollars and any number of years he wants. See if he takes it. If not fine.

Not a good trade, but far from the worst trade by any team this decade. I mean, are you forgetting how the Rangers stole Mcdonagh from Montreal? That comes to mind as one of many worse trades.

Well not much really to say!! Good luck Matty mo in the playoffs and in UFA!!

Can you imagine if they didn't make the playoffs and we lost that 2nd round pick?

Still the worst trade by any team this decade. Why is Snow not gone for mis-managing the teams assets?

@Steven Cook Neiderrieter should never have been picked number 5 - that was the mistake.  Clutterbuck is a good player and we also received a number 3 from Minnesota, which is a goalie, Eman McAdam.  We won't know for a couple of seasons who "won" that trade.

That said, I would agree that Snow should be fired.   The Vanek situation alone should be enough.  Free agents will be reluctant to come here with such a man in charge.  A change in GM and coach would at least show players that there is accountability and that a new start is in place.

@REDSpointofview

Seems that Wang, and Snow love it, saves cheap Charlie some cash, and keeps Snow in his GM role.

I hope that is not true.  Where did you hear that?

@REDSpointofview If that Etem story is true, Snow blew the Vanek situation going in and again going out.  If Etem had been obtained, the whole story would have been paletable.  We would have effectively traded a number 1 and 2 plus Moulson for a number 1 and Etem.  Etem may end up being a very good player.

Snow must have had a very ugly feeling in his gut when he realized that almost all the bids disappeared on the final day.  He probably wanted to take a bite out of the phone.

No no no, so many islander fans have this wrong. This is a bad pill to swallow either way you look at it and garth brought this upon himself. The correct move to limit the damage is to wait and see where we will pick in this years draft. Garth then has the option to either use that pick or let buffalo use it and keep next years first.

If we use this years pick and buffalo gets a 1,2 or 3 with our pick next year, that would be a nightmare scenario. We ultimately want to draw the weakest pick this year, let buffalo use it in what is considered mediocre. Then, take our chances in next years draft which is touted to be one of the deepest ever.

If, by chance we draw the number one, then keep it and pray buffy doesnt get conor mcdavid.

Ari i think Zdeno Chara, Jason Spezza and Bill Muckalt for Alexi Yashin was much worse in my honest opinion.

its really bad, but its not the worst  trade of the decade.

@Steven Cook

That was reported through TSN right after the trade dead line.  The Ducks had cleared space by trading Penner and the rumors were they intended to acquire Vanek.  It was Canadian television that produced the package that Snow supposedly turned down.  Snow countered with the statement that he didn't get any offers until after 12 noon because Ryan Kesler was in play.  He then stated that it was Montreal with Collberg that presented the best offer.

I have searched through TSN archives and cannot verify the offer as it is now out of date...

@jrjr

With this 'winning streak' they're currently on it looks as though they will draft 5th, or perhaps 4th and not get the assets they need to take that next step, I want more losses it matters not how many meaningless wins that they get, it has been much too late for a couple of months already.

slapshot18_rs

@jrjr  buffalo is not getting conor mcdavid through our pick next year.  you're basically saying you expect the islanders not only to not improve next year, but to be much worse?...

@mrcisback  How about Luongo and Olli Jokinen for Parrish and Kvasha?; How about Bertuzzi and McCabe for Trevor Linden? A little respect for Milbury. Bob Gainey ain't got nothing on him.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@mrcisback  that was technically outside of the last decade but yes that was infinitely worse.  there are numerous trades that are worse than this one.  this trade was a pending UFA, so while the return was terrible, we didnt trade long term assets away for nothing like has happened in several trades this past decade.

Im not going deep here for stats or anything but hasn't Bailey been playing in the league for like 5-6 years now while Nino first full? Already Bailey production yeah it is a trade that will keep giving for the other team. SnowBlows and so does Wong

since72
since72

@Dan Coscino @since72 @Steven Cook  Nino has 34 points in 76 games playing on the 1st and 2nd lines on a playoff team.  This is comparable to Bailey, our favorite whipping boy who plays 2nd and 3rd line minutes on a last place team.

Every team needs a guy like Clutterbuck.  He kills penalties, draws penalties, hits everything in sight and actually has a nice shot. We've all seen Nino play and he doesn't do any of those things.  He needs to score to be worthwhile.  He isn't doing that.  But he is still young.  Let's see how Nino's numbers are next season before drawing "hands down" conclusions.

since72
since72

@Jeff Roland @since72 @Steven Cook  I see his stats.  Have you ever seen him play?  He may have a very weak team in front of him.  Goalies can take time to develop.  You declaring him terrible is curious unless you have seen him play several times.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@phishstyx1 @slapshot18_rs  well everyone keeps saying we need a top winger to play with JT - what would you be willing to spend on a top guy? i mean, vanek has been practically a point per game player all year on three different teams - do you expect that kind of production from a guy making 2-4 mil?

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@Jeff Roland @slapshot18_rs @jrjr  it would essentially be management telling you they have no expectations for next season and are expecting to be one of, if not the worst team in the league next year. its not going to happen, and they are WAY better then their record indicates.  paired with quality coaching and goalie and this team improves in the standings drastically.
