GRATUITOUS ISLES/PENS VIDEO MONTAGERecapping Last Year's Craziness

I’ll be back with a formal game preview later this morning. For right now, let’s take a walk down memory lane and revisit last season’s “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore” moment.

OCTOBER 15, 2010: Letang nails Comeau

Way back at the beginning of last season, the Islanders were in Pittsburgh. The Pen’s Kris Letang laid out Blake Comeau with a big hit which was originally deemed an illegal hit to the head, resulting in a 5-minute major and game misconduct. The league would eventually rescind the penalty, saying replays showed it was not a hit to the head.

FEBRUARY 2, 2011: Setting the stage

The Islanders wouldn’t forget the hit on Comeau and the Penguins game them a serious reminder when the teams met in February. Max Talbot leveled Comeau twice, with a certifiably clean hit and one less so, in the first period.

The Islanders played well but got shutout 3-0 that night in Pittsburgh. As time was running down, Matt Cooke ran into Rick DiPietro. The Islanders took exception to it but DiPietro would have his own battle with Pens’ goalie Brent Johnson.

FEBRUARY 11, 2011: Welcome to Fight Club

The Islanders were sick and tired of a season of getting pushed around by the Penguins and that came to a head on February 11th as the teams met for the third time in three weeks. This was the Battle Royale and feel-good moment of the year for the fanbase. Regardless of whether or not the fights were warranted, you had to be happy seeing the team stand up for itself in such a way.
