Islanders sign D Carkner to three-year, $4.5 million deal

According to Newsday’s Arthur Staple, the New York Islanders have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Matt Carkner to a three-year, $4.5 million deal. Carkner, 31, had a goal and two assists in 29 games this past season in Ottawa.

In 162 NHL career games – 160 over the past three seasons in Ottawa – the 6-foot-4, 238-pound Carkner has four goals and 18 assists.

The Winchester, Ontario-born Carkner, who was a second-round pick (58th overall) by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, has racked up 361 career penalty minutes. He has also delivered 257 hits, while blocking 210 shots.

Carkner is expected to provide the Islanders’ blue line a much-needed physical presence.
