Isles omitted from NBC and NBCSN broadcast coverage in 2014-15

Christian Arnold, Islanders Point Blank:

6:08 p.m.: NBC Sports released a statement to Islanders Point Blank and SNY.tv regarding the lack of Islanders games being broadcasted nationally:

“The schedule reflects that the Islanders did not make the playoffs last year. But the schedule is subject to change and allows for teams to play their way onto it later in the year.”

So, it is still unfortunate the Islanders do not have a game nationally televised, but their reasoning makes sense. From a business standpoint and a logical standpoint, NBC Sports makes sense. The Isles aren’t the biggest draw on TV and did not make the playoffs, so they were the odd man out. There is also a chance for them to make it on if things change, and if they make the playoffs then they’ll have to be on NBC Sports.

Original Post: If you were looking to watch an Islander game on NBCSN or NBC network during the 2014-15 NHL season, don’t hold your breath.

NBC Sports

The NHL’s broadcast partner released its schedule for the upcoming season with plans to air 103 regular season games. None of which will feature the Islanders. In recent memory, it is the first time the Islander have not been on the NBCSN schedule.

The Islanders are coming off a tough season that saw them go 34-37-11 and missed the playoffs, after making it in 2013. Still, it’s hard to fully understand why the Islanders will not make at least one appearance, especially with this being the franchises final year at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. A trip at least once by the network would have been nice to see just for the old barn on Hempstead Turnpike to get at least a little send off nationally.

Beside the Islanders — though it is still early — look to be a team to be reckoned with in the Metropolitan and could be making a push for the playoffs late in the season. NBC or NBCSN could possibly flex the game if there is some intrigue to a late season contest, but that is unclear.

New York’s other two hockey will be making appearances on NBC and NBCSN… The Devils will have two home games broadcasted on NBCSN and the Rangers will make 10 appearances on NBCSN and three games will be broadcasted on NBC.

It’s understandable why the Rangers will be featured so frequently. They did just go to the Stanley Cup Final — to the dismay of Islander fans everywhere — and the league will want to milk that for all it’s worth. Makes sense, but the Devils had a rough season and don’t look to be a threat in the Metro this year.

The idea that New Jersey gets two nationally broadcasted games and the Islanders don’t just does not make sense. The opponents for those two games, by the way, are Columbus and Buffalo.

Not necessarily games that get tongues wagging.

It would seem it is still a respect thing when it comes to the Islanders. They had a bad season after having a good one so NBC decided it was not worth highlighting them on their networks.

Hopefully that will change in Brooklyn.

Nobody cares about the Fish Sticks, all these supposed die hard fans who do not go to games are a joke.Cheap ticket prices and the sight lines at the Nassau Mausoleum are really good so stop the crying and start showing.

I rather them not be on national TV. The broadcast sucks and I watch the games on NHL gamecenter and it gets blacked out.

well, i always get nervous for national tv games because i'm afraid they'll look bad.  and this might create a little bit of 'us against the world' that maybe wouldn't hurt.  i'm just sorry for jt and hope this doesn't frustrate him and make him want to think about moving on.  tbh he's worth a national tv game or two by himself, especially compared to what the njd have to offer, for example.

I have the feeling the Rangers would have 10 games regardless, and the point about the Devils is a good one, they are soooooo boring to watch still, and of course they didn't make the playoffs either. Last year at the Coliseum should have had a game broadcast preferably the last home game. Ten Ranger games? Just a reason not to watch.

I dont care about them not being on NBC.. even though it is ridiculous with a player like JT on the roster. What I care about is this team winning hockey games, making the playoffs, and making some noise IN the playoffs.

I hate NBC's coverage of hockey.  It's the Flyers, Rangers and Penguins network.  Mike Emrick, IMHO, is the worst announcer I've ever listened to (and I'm not exaggerating when I make this statement).  He's shrill and uses far too many words.  With a lot of Canadian coverage, the announcers employ an economy of language that allows the game to breath.  The game is the focus, not the talking heads. With all due respect, Emrick needs to learn to STFU.  If I could buy a cable package that gave me access to all the Canadian feeds plus the local teams, I'd be thrilled.  If NBC went away tomorrow, I wouldn't even notice.

ha ha ha this is no surprise. when you have a sadistic owner who takes pleasure in tortureing his fans by hiring and retaining a pitiful GM. who has achieved a bottom 5 finish in every full season he has been with the team not counting his first season which wasn't his team. the fans should stay away from this team in groves. the only way to force this corrupt sadist to sell is to not spend a penny on this team. if anyone that reads this or other articles on here that outline the miserable state of this franchise under the oppressive regime of this owner feels likewise then you owe it to the great fans of this tormented franchise to spread the word. if you know anyone that spends money to go to a game please try to dissuade them from participating in that lunacy. to give money to someone that profits from your misery is beyond any form of comprehension.

You mean I won't get to see the Isles games pre-gamed by Milbury and called by Joe Beninati (who poops himself every time Alex Ovechkin touches the puck) or Dave "the screamer" Strader?  Damn, damn, damn.

To Orange: you have to understand this is the heart of New York not upstate New York, NJ, Columbus, and so forth...

NYers are all about winning. Even though die hards like myself have been waiting for 25 yrs for this team to improv nothing has been done. We have had enough of the toucher and empty promises. Blaming it on the building #1 it's about wining first!

Until it shows on the ice the seats will be empty even 25% in Brooklyn. Long Island it was 40%.

You know what I can't stand the most about this current management. You have a GM and owner that cuts slack to players like Josh Bailey and DP - rewards him with a new 3 yr contract but players like X team mates Niño, Brad Boyle, JPP, and so forth have to earn it.

Pathetic! Die hard islanders fan until the team improves I'm not going to a single game I vowed 3 yrs ago as well as my friends did.

"So, it is still unfortunate the Islanders do not have a game nationally televised, but the reasoning makes a bit more sense."

Wow Christian this reasoning makes sense to you? Did you just rollover because the network replied back to you?

Buffalo was dead last and does not have a player like JT and they are on 11 times.

Isles will be much better this season w/o question. The only hurdle will be winning a round in the playoffs. As for NBC I cancelled my extra BS on Direct TV months ago w/ no intention of renewing. ,Devs(no scoring),toronto,Buff,Flyers(w/ a full season of Amac & no Hartnell),Canes,Wings,Sens, will not make it.Rags take a big step back & Caps are weaker in depth on scoring lines.Fla is an unknown w/ their spending spree.Isles even w/ D questions are looking pretty good to me right now.

So apparently only 2 U.S.-based teams missed the playoffs last year according to NBC logic.

He will sell.....

Every single year I could remember with the islanders even sucking for the last 20 yrs still where televised 1x on NBC or National televised network.

Conspiracy theory:

I think the NHL had a hand in it too not have the islanders televised at least 1 game.

Also of course not drawing a lot of ratings because they have been bad for so long, but being the last year think it would be different.

I think all parties are forcing Charles Wang to sell the team eventhough they won't say it in public. The NHL introduced Barrowy to Charles Wang

Playing in a Big market like New York there is no small market here it's a flat out lie. Aka - Islanders and Mets that spend as little as possible.

Don't worry don't worry Wang will sell before they had to Brooklyn in 2015 or sooner. As 2 high regarded sources have told us. He will sell at least 75% with hold the remaining and Eventrully sell the remaining.

He will sell........

erika
erika

That's what happens when you have an owner who did every thing he could to make the team irrelevant. I guess when your own owner call you a "small market team" the networks believe him.

What the hell is up with the sale??

Not as bad as a snub considering Florida, Ottowa, Winepeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Calgary were all left off the schedule as well.  Hopefully the Islanders kick some ass next season and change NBC's mind!

Jay Clark

I am getting sooo tired of this franchise and the lack of respect from the league, broadcasters, and analyst. why is ok to right off a 4 cup dynasty while Edmonton and the Grey one get praise for doing the same thing. a 19 and 0 run on winning playoff rounds will never be touched. 50 in 50 goals scorer. If wang, snow, or new owner cant do something quick, I am one more losing season away from being a Devils fan.

P.S. Rangers suck

@Macacawitz I disagree with the Emrick comment, but it is true about the Ranger Flyer Penguin network. I'd rather listen to Goring mispronouncing names and Howie doing his thing anyway.

@metzsuc I doubt we will see that for a while.  Not sure how long the MSG contract is, but I think it's pretty long.  YES would be a nice fit since the Nets are there too.

Rangers sell out because they play in MSG if it was reversed it would be different. Look in the early 2000 years when the Rangers sucked lots of empty seats. Look at it on YouTube.

@orange2327 it is a slap in the face and hopefully thats how JT and co. take it.  i dont mind the underdog role at all.  hopefully it lights a fire under them.

myisles72

@orange2327 I am going to take this opportunity to agree with you 100%. This is a slap in the face to a storied franchise with one of the league's best players (the league has no interest in showcasing John Tavares?). And the team actually spent some money in free agency this summer. And, most of all, it is an insult to all Islander fans, who have to be some of the most dedicated in the league, facing everything that has happened in the past 20 years.

I hope you aren't going to watch ESPN for hockey games, or articles, they are the worse station on the tube for hockey, their coverage is zero, better to rethink your preference.

@elephant  5 out of the 6 teams you mentioned are Canadian teams that's why they were left off the NBC schedule, NBC would rather televise 2 US based teams but they don't mind having Montreal or Toronto, make no mistake about it it's a snub.

@slapshot18_rs @orange2327 To be honest, I don't think they could give a crap.  Maybe they rally behind pundants who might pick them to be bad, but I don't think they are worried about what NBC does.  Neither to I for that matter.  I may be in the minority, but I like Howie Rose and prefer to listen to him.  I like Doc too, but I'm not sure if he is with NBC or NHL Network

@myisles72 @orange2327

Anyone who buys the statement Isles didn't make playoffs - that's why not on is a total fool.  Well - than why are the Devs, Buff etc, on multiple times.  Total slap in the face - sorry NBC - don't buy it.  We have a top 3 player in JT - last year at coliseum blah blah.  Made some great offseason moves.  Plus we are def top 5 in the league as far as dedicated - real hockey fans - a real fan base!  The lowly isles will pull better ratings simply because we all care every day  - not when convenient/playoff bandwagon jumpers (see 60% Rags fans this year).  Again - sorry NBC - this is bs we are not on.  I almost wish we said to them - FU if they flex us one game when we are hopefully in the playoff mix.    Christian - you are giving the statement waaaaay to much credit.  Go back and ask the real question - if its non playoffs - again why are the Devs and Buff (arguably much worse teams on paper as of today) on multiple times.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@Don22 im not saying them not making the national coverage is what would light a fire under them haha..i mean the continuation of them being looked down upon and treated poorly.  this is just the latest example.

islesfan77

That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. I disagree. The team had major problems before Wang came onboard.

In any event, I sighed because it is a worn out rant in all caps no less.

islesfan77
islesfan77

No, they are a small market team, always have been.

islesfan77
islesfan77

@orange2327 Then you admit that the statement is not true. Wang did not "totally decimate this team" it had major problems before Wang.  It is also not true that he turned the Islanders into a laughing stock, the change to logo did that. The Spano fiasco also that. Finally, "nobody wants to play for" except Halak, Tavares (who signed an extension) and a bunch of others.

Look, I get it. Some people here want to blame Wang for everything. Fine, but just be factual because otherwise it looks ridiculous.

islesfan77
islesfan77

@wangbegone The Islanders are not located in the middle of a major city like Manhattan, Boston, Chicago, Montreal or Toronto.
