NASSAU VOTERS SAY NO TO COLISEUM DEALCharles Wang, you have the next move

The proposal for a new $350 million arena for Nassau and the Islanders was rejected by county voters at today’s public referendum.

Charles Wang and Edward Mangano will have to decide on their next move. This referendum was their idea. The vote was set up purposefully on a summer Monday to give their proposal the best chance to win, and the final result still wasn’t close.

Mangano called it a “great day” because the people had their say. Wang said he was “disappointed” and “heartbroken,” but declined to discuss specific next steps. He also said he was really looking forward to a great season from his team this season.

Mangano and Wang could still try to work out a different deal with legislature and see if NIFA will approve it.

Or perhaps finally, for the first time since he bought the team eleven years ago, Wang will publicly dance with other municipalities.

Wang insisted on hearing “Yes or No” from Kate Murray and the Town of Hempstead on his Lighthouse Project. The answer was NO.

The Islanders owner and County Executive Edward Mangano went to extraordinary lengths to hear “Yes or No” from the registered voters of Nassau. Today, the answer came back NO.

Now the question is, will Charles Wang take NO for an answer?

Personal Note: I’m very, very sorry for the Islanders organization and its loyal fans. There is no question that everyone who cares about the Islanders did the best they could to help with the referendum. Once again, this story is far, far from over. I would still suggest keeping the faith and I believe the Islanders will remain in the New York area – with Nassau still the leading contender.
