REPORT: Islanders Offered "All of Their Picks" For Ryan Murray

Here at Point Blank, we were high on Ryan Murray for weeks leading up to the draft. He ended up not being available in the #4 slot as he was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets at #2. But that doesn’t mean we were wrong in the Islanders interest in Murray, at least according to Blue Jackets beat reporter Aaron Portzline:

How highly did the Blue Jackets value defenseman Ryan Murray before taking him with the No. 2 overall pick in Friday’s first round of the NHL Draft? Enough to turn down an eye-opening offer from the New York Islanders, who, according to numerous NHL sources, offered all of their picks — one in each round — for the right to move up from No. 4 to No. 2 for Murray.

That’s right, for the Jackets’ No. 2 pick, the Islanders offered pick Nos. 4, 34, 65, 103, 125, 155 and 185. The bounty would have given the Jackets the following picks: 4, 31, 34, 62, 65, 95, 103, 125, 152, 155, 182 and 185. And if that weren’t enough, the Jackets could have had the Kings’ No. 30 if they wanted it.

And boom goes the dynamite. If you didn’t have coffee yet this morning, I’d say this might have just given you a similar wake up call. But of course, this needs to be taken with a large grain of salt as it’s coming from the Blue Jackets camp.

There was a similar report of this on NHL Network from Kelly Chase over the weekend. The only difference was that Chase used the words “most of their picks” instead of “all.”

(1:00pm) To update, ENV79 has a great take in the comments:

Consider the source.

Aaron Portzline has used us as a punching bag in the past to distract his readers from the increasingly bigger gong show that is the BJs. I’ll believe that we may have offered our first, second and third rounder to move up to get Murray but all of them?

Recipe for conjuring up lukewarm interest in the BJs after an awful season: Find one franchise of equal comic value to yours, preferably with equal or smaller media contingent to mitigate pushback and exaggerate a rumor.

Further update (1:22pm): Greg Wyshnsyki over at Puck Daddy seems to think the deal hinged on Nail Yakupov.

The version I heard had one contingency: That Nail Yakupov was available at No. 2, if the Edmonton Oilers decided to take defenseman Ryan Murray at No. 1. That the Islanders would trade all their picks for Yakupov, who eventually went No. 1 to the Oilers.
