Since we had mentioned Dennis Potvin the other day, this seems like as good a time as any to follow up with this video. On January 28, 1986, Potvin scored in the Islanders 9-2 rout of the Maple Leafs at the Coliseum, breaking Orr’s record for goals scored by a defenseman.
Nearly a month earlier, on December 25, 1985, Potvin broke Orr’s record for points by a defender. He currently sits in 5th on the all-time goals list and 7th in points, behind many of the great defenders of the 80s and 90s such as Ray Bourque, the all-time leader in both categories, Paul Coffey and Al MacInnis. However, Orr and Potvin are still impressively first and seond on the list of goals per game, scoring their goals at an impressive pace.
For some extra lockout reading material, you can flashback to 1988 and CB’s interview with Orr about Potvin:
When he announced his retirement shortly before the start of the 1987-88 season, Potvin was asked by a reporter if he thought he was better than Orr. In a burst of spontaneous pride, he answered, “Yes, I think so.”
