2:45 pm – An impeccable source with Team Russia, at the World Junior Championships and close to Kirill Petrov shared the following this afternoon with Point Blank:
- Petrov will not be joining the Islanders organization during the 2009-2010 NHL season.
- For the Islanders to bring Petrov to their organization in the 2010 offseason, some sort of arrangement – likely including a large bag of cash – with Kazan Ak Bars and the Kontinental Hockey League will likely be necessary. Freeing up Bridgeport frequent scratch defenseman Anton Klementyev to play in the prestigious WJC is not enough to seal the deal. Petrov has two seasons after the current one remaining on his Kazan contract.
- Of course, the Islanders will need to sign Petrov – a brilliant 2008 third round pick by the Islanders, but a player with mid-first-round ability. Not necessarily an easy negotiation.
- Petrov may play on a line today against Slovakia with Nikita Filatov, who did not play well in Russia’s 6-2 win over Austria.
