THE MORNING SKATE — Martinek Signs, Six Recalled
The Islanders have signed Radek Martinek to a one-year deal. That now gives them five NHL contracted defenders not named Visnovsky: Streit, Carkner, Hamonic, MacDonald, and Martinek.
This morning the Islanders also recalled six Sound Tigers for training camp:
Most of those names should look familiar. A couple that don’t are Jon Landry and Colin McDonald. Landry is a 29-year old defender who has never played an NHL game but excelled the past two years in Bridgeport. He has 20 points this season for the Sound Tigers and is big, listed at 6-3, 220.
Colin McDonald is a 28-year old right wing who has played only a few NHL games with previous teams. He’s made the AHL All-Star game each of the last two seasons and is second on the Sound Tigers this year with 27 points in 35 games.
Both of these players are, so far, career AHLers but have earned their way into a tryout as other Islanders have done in the past. Don’t expect them to make it but as the lottery says; ‘hey, you never know.’
Two names that are missing off of those lists are Nino Niederreiter and Matt Donovan two who were pretty much assumed to make the opening night roster. Each has been the best player at their position for Bridgeport this season. Niederreiter has put up a point per game in Bridgeport and is their leading scorer, while Donovan has 18 points in 36 games and is second on the team in +/-. It seems as though the Islanders are going with calling up the older players and letting the younger ones get a bit more time. Not only that, but with injuries being what they are, we may see Donovan and Nino soon anyway.
Also, Jesse Joensuu is day-to-day with a groin injury and Josh Bailey will miss 2-4 weeks after hurting his knee in Germany.
