Griffin Reinhart MVP, Oil Kings Win WHL Title

The Portland Winterhawks won Game Six in the WHL Finals to force a decisive Game Seven on Monday on their home turf. But, led by Isles prospect Griffin Reinhart, the home ice advantage didn’t matter, as the Edmonton Oil Kings triumphed.

The Oil Kings won 4-2 on Monday night to take the series in seven and bring home their second league title in three years, the other coming in 2012.

Reinhart was named MVP of the finals with three points in the series. He had 13 points in 21 playoff games including four goals, which outpaced his point totals on the season of 21 points in 45 games and four goals.

                        Any trade with Toronto must have Bailey going back in return!

  As Rumored all three Toronto players are available,Jake Gardiner,Nazem Kadri and James Reimer. I think James Reimer is an improvement over Nakakov but not by much. Kadri has some good talent but it all depends on what Toronto wants in return. Although i really would like to make a move for Jake Gardiner. He's a very good young defenseman. I really don't get why theres such a rush for Toronto to move him. I would do the 5th pick and a 3rd round pick for Toronto's 8th pick and Gardiner. Of coarse all these trades are contingent on the Islanders trading for a left wing to play with Tavares on the first line such as Evander Kane. Or you know what we might have our top line left winger right in front of our eyes with Anders Lee or Brock Nelson.

Not sure that I agree a LW for JT is really an issue at all.  With JT and KO creating space and opportunities by the bushel, I want a strong body to play near the net.  I have a good amount of confidence in Lee or Nelson could fill that niche.  If I could get Kane, I'd be very excited about the prospect.

But, secondary scoring is a much bigger issue.  I would much rather have a very good 1st line AND a 2nd line that will contribute, vs a 1st line that is excellent with a second line that barely contributes.

I like what I saw from Strome towards the end of last yr, but if I thought of one need for our forwards it would be some veteran leadership for that second line.  Putting Nelson back on the 1st line with JT will only help his development.  Bringing in a veteran to play on the 2nd line will only help the development of Lee and Strome.  Development is key.  Of course we need a goalie, but most of our hopes relies on the abilities of some very young players.

The Islanders always do things the hard way .They should of got Halak signed at the trade but like usual this dysfunctional Org.waited too long.Now Pittsburgh is out of the Playoffs Minnesota is out of the playoffs and Vancouver,they all are now concentrating on  2015 were Two weeks ago management was 100 percent involved in the Playoffs . If you were Him would you want to play for them or the Islanders?Chances are good we will be outbid, or now pay Him three times what you would have the day the trade was made.Throw Philly ,San Jose in There too.Reinhardt is going nowhere.We need a goalie signed or where going nowhere to in 2015.

Trade Reinhart right now for a back up goalie who can become our next GM. OOOPS! Sorry, I forgot Wacky Wang will never fire his GM.

21 years ago tonight, we all jumped for joy as David Volek scored the last meaningful goal this organization has seen since.  We were all getting ready to, as Jiggs put it, "[head] off to Montreal for the Conference Championship."

Looking back, every single person alive that night can now legally buy alcohol in this country.  Newborns, just days old on 5/14/93 will soon be graduating college without ever experiencing a playoff victory from this once-proud franchise.

Again, thanks for nothing Chuckles Wang.

I can't believe people on here actually want Phaneuf. I want way to many leafs games (wife is a fan). Take out the few cheap shots he has laid on JT and KO and you have a complete wuss. He doesn't play up to his size and potential. He doesn't stick up for his teammates. He is a terrible leader. He is a defensive liability. The collapse in the 2013 playoffs (Specifically the game 7 loss) can be completely attributed to him. Yes there are a lot of players who I can't stand but actually would like on the isles. He is DEFINATELY not one of them.

Yes,,, he's a blogger on a rumor site but, Dan Petriw must have just a little bit of inside knowledge because he continues to post on that site.  if he was continuously wrong about his posts, he would be relieved of his position simply because continually being wrong means no one is going to pay attention to you,,, and he is still there.  So there must be some grain of truth to his ramblings, and his latest rambling has to do with all these rumored trades we keep hearing about,,, the ones we all think Garth Snow should or shouldn't make...

There is no way Montreal is going to let PK Subban loose.  They will lock him up long term...

Snow wants no part of any trade with Edmonton that sends Griffin Reinhart out west...

There is little to no interest in either Evander Kane or Dustin Byfuglien should Winnipeg decide to move them but, if Winnipeg decides to move Zach Begosian, Snow wants in on that.  Where that came from is anyones guess because Bogosian most likely ins't even on the market...

There is zero interest in Jason Spezza, as Petriw states with his declining stats and bloated contract.

However, if Toronto considers moving Dion Phaneuf, Snow would consider a deal...

None of those rumors address the two biggest needs right now, goal tending and a left wing to replace Moulson/Vanek.  Snow must sign Halak, probably should sign Nabokov, and needs to address Poulin and Nilsson as RFA's.  He must also fill the holes in Bridgeport should he let Nilsson go back to Europe and not resign Reiter.  As Snow said last week on SportsTalk Radio, "We have no goal tenders under contract"...

The left wing hole that Snow created will be easier to fill.  The name that intrigues me is Dustin Penner, a UFA in Washington.  He would be in Snow's price range, and fits the reclamation requirements that Snow seems to seek in signing UFA forwards.  He's huge and with Strome or Tavares might be a decent scorer that adds some protection with physical play.  6'5", 245 pound wings that possess some skating and scoring ability are rare, and this one is available...

 Lets all give props to Orange2327, he predicted the Rangers beating the Penguins in this series even when Pittsburg went up 3-1 in the series. I knew the Rangers had a good chance of beating the Penguins after watching the Penguin Columbus series.

jepliberty

Many of us in here are not enthralled with Poulin, or Nilsson and that should say something about Snow's prowess at drafting, or really lack of it.

jepliberty

Snow believes he has Halak right where he wants him, he is looking to put the squeeze on him, like he did to Vanek.

slapshot18_rs

@mrcisback  i would love to get gardiner but like you said, curious as to why they want to move him unless they are planning a semi-rebuild? hes been very solid and is only 23.  I wouldnt mind reimer as a back up, he has a lot of upside and could be had for relatively cheap i would think.

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@willymayshays

That is why I think Dustin Penner not such a reach.  He's in Snow's price range, a veteran that has shown flashes of scoring ability and he is as big as they come on the front line...

@truth77

outbid?  We are the only ones bidding right now.  Until July 1st.

Personally I'm worried.  It's taking a bit longer than I expected, but I'm going to stay positive about the idea until June.  June 1st rolls around and he's still not signed... At that point I draw the conclusion that Halak wants out or Wang/Snow offered too little.

slapshot18_rs

@hoverlow  because we would actually have some stability on the blue line. yeah hes not worth what hes paid, but hes still infinitely better than what we have, and it would take the pressure off of our young guys like reinhart who is coming in with high expectations.  and the only reason that contract would be taken from toronto is becuase the market for quality defenseman is so thin.  but i agree, if we could get someone other than him, im all for that before taking on that obnoxious contract.

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@hoverlow

I am not asking for Phaneuf.  As a point, I actually stated that I don't like him but, I would learn to like him if he wore an Islander sweater.  I posted that a half hour ago along with the fact that Phaneuf comes with one of the worst contracts in the NHL.  Wang and Snow should have a good understanding of what a bad contract is, having dealt with Yashin and DiPietro's contracts.  $7 million per until 2021 qualifies as a bad contract.  Personally, I think Snow fills the defense needs through the draft selections he has made and concentrates on goal tending and getting a left wing to play with either Tavares or Strome...

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

i think phaneuf answers the biggest need outside of goaltending.  im not his biggest fan becuase i dont believe hes a true #1 for his contract but he is a big bodied defenseman that we are missing.  i dont see left wing as that big of an issue. we have options that we can put beside tavares if we need to.  i think we need a goalie, a defenseman, and then a winger

@jepliberty Maybe if we had a real goaltending coach to work with these kids instead of Garth's old Maine buddy Dunham.

@jepliberty  What are you talking about????  He offered Vanek 7 years for $50M, that was not a squeeze.  Sarcastic humor only works when it is not simply stupid.

REDSpointofview

@jepliberty @REDSpointofview

I was just ruminating about the rumors when I came across the available UFA's and uncovered Penner's name.  A check of his stats indicate that he's bounced around unable to find a home.  Perhaps that's a red flag but, Snow has dipped into that pool every year since 2009 to take Moulson, Grabner, Parenteau, Boyes and Bouchard.  One of them is still here and two others probably should be, too.  So he has a history of finding a reclamation project and turning them into a productive player, and as has been pointed out numerous times, who wouldn't be productive playing beside Tavares???

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@slapshot18_rs

I would concur on that assessment except for the fact that the options at left wing currently are Lee, Grabner, Nelson and Bailey,,, and that moves Nelson out of his center spot and still means one of those will be the right wing on a second line. Snow created this void with the Moulson/Vanek failure and now must fill that hole...

Grabner is best suited in that #3 LW role with Nielsen and Clutterbuck.  That leaves Lee, Nelson and bailey to fill the three spots on the top two lines...

Ironic isn't it, he sucks at drafting goalies the position he played while active, and we should trust him at drafting other players? Or signing FAs or RFAs.

@orange2327  niskanen and orpik will be a UFA as well so they will certainly be in the market for dmen

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@orange2327  i'd have to think he would be the first casualty if there are changes made, besides a new coach.

since72

@orange2327 I think if Pittsburgh goes after a goalie, Miller and Hiller will top the list.  They are capable of signing one or the other.  Vancouver may want him, but frankly, I think that they are farther away from contending than we are.  They finished 4 points above us and have no current gm or coach.  They could be in free fall.  Halak would be the clear number 1 with us.  He is behind Hiller and Miller if he goes to fa so, unless he just doesn't like LI, why not sign here if the money is where it needs to be?

Don22

@orange2327  Maybe Vancouver, but do you really think Pitt feels Halak would be a better alternative to MAF?  I know Fleury has his issues, but he's still pretty good.

don you mean penner i am assuming? i dont really think we should go for him.  i suggest michalek for tavares left

Don22

@slapshot18_rs @REDSpointofview  Not sure how durable.  Looked up his stats and last season was the first time he played a full season.  Over the past bunch of years he's missed time in each.

I get a little nervous with players that have good stats playing on teams like San Jose, LA etc.  It makes me wonder if it would carry over to a lesser skilled team.

Don22
Don22

@slapshot18_rs  Isn't he a bit of a head case too? I love his size, but I don't know.  He has bounced around the last couple of years and hasn't done too much since Edmonton.

@dz. I think Remier could be had for much less than Frans. Imo a couple 2nds might just do it. But all guess work here.

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@dzruggie @REDSpointofview @slapshot18_rs

I would prefer Frans and the #5 be used for Evander Kane,,, and nothing else.  Snow has exclusivity with Halak until the UFA period begins.  His TOP priority must be to sign him before that.  Even if he has to over pay, it's an imperative that he sign Halak.  Failure to do so would be just another slap in the face to this organization, another reason other UFA's say no to coming here.

Once Halak is signed, Snow can move on to Nabokov as the back up and then concentrate on filling his top three lines.  All he really needs is one top six forward to prevent Josh Bailey from being a top six forward next year.  That's why I think Penner is a doable option.  I also do not see a defenseman coming this way.  There are already too many in the system and some of then are ready to compete for spots here...

dzruggie
dzruggie

@REDSpointofview @slapshot18_rs  It was written he offered 7 for $50M so he understands the JT deal is a bargain at this point.  First is to sign Halak.  If that is not going to happen the goalie must be addressed and the best chip to move (from an organizational strength that is) would be to send Frans to Toronto for Reimer (plus or minus extra chips either way).  Next is address the D but that is not easy.  You saw Amac get $30M so you all understand the cost of an average minute eating D will be, not to mention trying to pry a top 4.  So that means another year to allow our own prospects to grow on the back line and with that, another year of not being ready to contend.

For me on 7/1 I would see how Vanek plays out as a UFA as that will shape the market.  Seems everyone has him in MN already and with that there are several options, albeit not the best, to add as a LW:  Heatley, Machalek (spelling) or Penner mentioned above.

Bottom line out best trade-able commodity is Frans and the #5 pick.

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@slapshot18_rs

We don't really know just how much Snow offered Vanek before the trade dead line.  Speculation is just that and whatever the amount, Vanek said NO...  I just do not think Snow would go out and sign a UFA for bigger money than he is currently paying Tavares...

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

well if his plan was to pay Vanek the kind of money he was rumored to offer him, maybe he would consider a larger contract for a player of his calibur.  michalek will come cheaper than vanek would have.

but as you said, history indicates he wouldnt make a move like this.

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@slapshot18_rs @REDSpointofview

Michalek would be a nice acquisition but, he falls out of the price range Snow would be willing to commit to on a forward.  I am not sure that he would go high enough to get him and history indicates Snow would rather try a reclamation project like Parenteau or Boyes that he can get on the cheap.  That's why I think Penner a fit in that spot...

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@slapshot18_rs  @orange2327

I would love Kane, too.  However, if that rumor site and Dan Petriw is correct, that is not happening.

We also need more than one goal tender, Snow said so.  We do not have even one under contract for next year.  Snow actually needs to sign four goal tenders and a good start would be inking Halak and Nabokov right away.  As far as Phaneuf, I don't like him but, if he was in an Islander sweater I would learn to like him.  I just do not see Snow investing $7 million a year until 2021 on him.  That is a bad contract...

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@REDSpointofview id like snow to go after milan michalek.  hes a big body too and hes durable.  also is still in his prime.  would fit right in on that left wing of tavares'.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

im not saying we dont need a LW, i just think we need a goalie and top defenseman more importantly.  i dont think dustin penner is the answer. he got hurt eating pancakes with his wife, i think we can do better than that.
