Isles Future Taking Shape Now

Christian Arnold, Islanders Point Blank:

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — If anyone looks at the Islanders roster as it currently is, one could say it may be a glimpse into the future of sorts.

The Islanders have 10 rookies in their lineup, and that includes highly touted prospects Ryan Strome, Anders Lee and Brock Nelson. The final eight games will be an opportunity for them to make an impact and impress the team’s brass in hopes of starting in the NHL next season.

“I think it shows that there’s great opportunity in this organization,” Strome said on Saturday. “Obviously injuries are tough to come by, but guys are getting an opportunity. I mean those guys played a full year in Bridgeport last year, so obviously very exciting for them and for me it’s just trying to show them I’m here to stay.”

But the present could be more than a tryout for these players, it could very well be a preview of what is to come in the future for the Isles. It’s safe to say Strome, Nelson, Lee and Matt Donovan will safely have a place on the team going forward. Nelson is the elder statesman of sorts since he has 65 career NHL games under his belt, which includes one playoff game.

He’s been excited to have the familiar faces around him in Isles the locker room.

“Now with all the young guys we have it’s kind of fun to have these guys here,” Nelson said. “And go through this together. Kind of learn as a group at the same time. I think it’s nice having some of the faces that we had in Bridgeport last year up here.”

Both Strome and Nelson acknowledged that the future of the Isles franchise may be taking shape this season.

“I think the young guys, myself included, I think we want to try to add to that core group,” Strome said. “I think there’s a really good core group of players here and great leadership group. A group that’s committed to what this team has to offer… Everyday I feel more comfortable and I feel more at home.”

Nelson added: “We’re all here in the same boat. Trying to learn and get better everyday. Kind of make our way into the lineup and play. And help this team be successful.”

@Jeff Roland Visnovsky hopefully will not start or be on the team next year his days are behind him.I am not making De haan  out to be a Star he is a young player with a bright future he is very mobile as is Hamonic and Hickey .Look I not picking them to win the Stanley Cup Next Year, I am saying if all things go right they will make the playoffs.That means New Coach,New Owner and Two player picked up a Goalie and a Veteran Winger.If this happens at the start of next season are you a gambling man Jeff?

@Jeff Roland You dont need all three De men to make it 2 would be nice Ill take one. Dehaan /Hamonic Reinhardt/ Hickey. Visnovsky,churchmen pullock strait,mayfield Donavan Polka competing for the other two spots.With a competent New Coach I am sure they will figure that out.If we cant get one guy to start with 3 of them being high first round draft picks Donovan,Pullock,Reinhardt. . Well enough said.Look everyone wrote off De haan he has been there best Defensemen.The one bright spot for this year.

look the Islanders are not that far away from a playoff spot next year ,you know from my past posting I am a not fan of this manage to mismanage Org.So here is my reasoning.15-20 goals next year Strome Nelson 20-30 goals next year Grabner,J.T Okposo,Nielsen Lee.that is 7 guy that can put the puck in the net,add Polka Pullock,Reinhardt to the defense and in the off season get a Goalie,a Veteran Winger and a New Coach and it could happen, look at Philly and Colorado with Coaching changes.The key Wang has to go00000000000000000.

GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE WANG

It is with some amusement that I read these posts about the kids gaining experience while the team plays out the string.  To borrow from an Arlo Guthrie song,,, the future begins today,,, but as the youth of this organization head off to class one must take pause to realize just what school they are attending.  This is Chuckles Clown College we are talking about.  The place with Snowzo Bozo as the Chancellor and Cappy Kadiddlehopper as the Head Master.  This is the school that taught Bailey how to float and Nino how to gripe.  The school that transferred in such learned scholars as Jay Pandolfo and Marty Reasoner and told us that they would help with the youngsters education.  The same school that needed to toll contracts to get the players to even come here.  Is this the type of education you want those young kids to get???

I have lost all trust in Snow's ability to run this organization.  The Moulson with a #1 and #2 for Vanek which begat Collberg and a conditional #2 was an absolute boondoggle and only made worse by Snow's comments about how he coveted Collberg all along.  Are we to trust this GM to make a deal with Winnipeg???  Cheveldayoff just has to be salivating at the thought of negotiating with Snow.  Sure, Kane and Byfuglien would look nice on the Isles first and second lines but, can Snow be trusted to send back equal value???  Even if such a deal is consummated, it still leaves a gaping hole in goal.  The future begins with a solid number one goal tender.  Until Snow accomplishes that, I wouldn't trust him with the ABC's of operating a hockey franchise ever again.

Of course, all this is moot if Wang does indeed sell the team.  I'm just not going to hold my breath until that happens.

   Its refreshing to listen to the excitement among the young players. But some of these players might not be here at the start of the 2014-15 season if Snow is looking to acquire a top 1st line talent to play with Tavares and Okposo. I'm really worried about any possible trade Snow makes from now on. Other GM's now know they can take advantage of Snow after witnessing the 2014 trade deadline disaster. The more i think about it i don't want to trade any of these young guys.

I think with a new owner (hopefully this Wang sale happens this summer) and a new GM, you have a much better environment for winning. Cappy has been dealing with a team that thrives on spending as little as possible.  At times, I thought he should be fired, but then he got them to turn it around.  Even this year, despite losing Vis and Nabby, he still had a decent stretch, before it all fell apart. I'm not saying he is the answer, but I certainly don't want to see Laviolette - he was run out of here, Carolina and Philadelphia; seems like a trend where he wears thin after a few years.

The real need this offseason, is a legit NHL goaltender, whose younger than 32.  With guys on D coming up, like Pedan, Reinhart and maybe Pulock  (barring injuries), this team could actually be good next year.

I wouldn't sacrifice anything for a top winger next to JT, I would just move Bailey up there with JT and KO.  2nd line of Lee, Nelson and Strome, 3rd line of Grabner, Frans and Cal. 4th line of Martin, Cizikas and Boulton/MacDonald.

This team frankly has some talent but poorly coached!! Sure!! That being said the culture of losing permitted through this franchise and has even before wang put his lousy MIT's on it!! The revolving door of wingers JT has had means now we need another guy to play the first line!! I don't think Lee is ready and no ufa is coming here!! Maybe that Winnipeg deal but do you give say franzy??? And pray that one or two of these young dmen are good I mean really good!! As for goaltentending well....you know!! IMO no playoffs next year!! Detroit/cbj/wash and others will be better next year!! Adios to the old barn it was fun!!

The young talent on this team is great AND getting a coach that will develop them better than Crapuano is imperative!

Add Griffin Reinhart, an NHL Goalie and Peter Laviolette to this team next year and we will be a playoff team next season.... Period, and Guaranteed !!!  It's that simple....

John Richards

Your projecting something that has too many maybes!! Viz??? Cmon dehaan has been their best dman by default!! Don't make him out to be a star yet!! And many of the others haven't played one minute in the NHL!! Sorry this team needs a better version of Matt carkner!! A big solid guy who can lead by both example and word!!

@truth77 Sounds good.  Let's get 'er done.

Now this is what we can expect:

The forwards that you see are the forwards that will play.  Not necessarily a bad thing because scoring is not the problem.

Only Reinhart will be added on D.  The only verteren presence on the ice behind the blue line will be Visnovsky if he can play.  If not, then Brien Strat will be the elder statesmen at age 26.  Oh, and Carkner!

Next year's goalies may be Reimer if a deal can be worked out and Nabakov if he is willing to split time on this club.  Otherwise it will be one of the dynamic duo with the .88 save percentages and 3 plus gaa.  No free agent goalie will want to come here unless he has no other options.

Finally, Cappy will coach.  Possibly, Possibly, Weight will replace him.  I'm not certain that is an upgrade but there you go.

Hope I am wrong.

Good post as usual Red, couldn't have said it better myself.

Getting young talent is great, but development is key.

slapshot18_rs

@REDSpointofview  mind boggling that some people dont think this is good exposure for the young kids that have NEVER seen an nhl game

is wang/snow out there coaching them to play hockey? have they EVER played at the speed that the nhl is played? have they EVER played against teams as big as they are playing now? no, so its better to get your feet wet now when it doesnt matter in order to get more comfortable this way they can prepare to take the next step in their development next season.  this is perfect logic that literally every team, in every sport uses.

shlo
shlo

@REDSpointofview You are on the roll this morning. Unless  Koskinen is the real deal, forget about a number one goal tender. Snow will have to blow away the competition for a FA goalie, really overpay like Philly did with Bryzgalov (not that it worked out for them).

Do you really see him doing that?

I like the Kane idea but not Byfuglien so much. He is too lazy or too slow. I agree that his size is something we need but he tends to show up overweight and out of shape. Do you think that our superior coaching staff can get him moving?

@mrcisback - I agree. This DUNCE hasn't won a single trade yet, and I have no faith that he ever will. Even Milbury got it right once in a while (See Kenny Jonsson), but Snow is beyond incompetent.

He makes Milbury look good.

@John Falcone  Why do guys keep posting Strome on wing....he is a center and will play center.

@John Richards  Really ???  You are the Jets and have Kane and you get offered Frans you are going to say yes???/  Come on.  Maybe Frans and the top pick this draft.....Maybe. However if that was the cost I would do it in a heartbeat.  You then look at Kane - JT -KO, Lee - Strome - Bailey, Grabner - Nelson -Cal

@njersey Wow! You really believe that a goalie, a rookie defenseman and a coach that was fired from a team that was underperforming (Flyers) is all we need to get into the playoffs? Are you Garth Snow?

willymayshays

@since72

I'm thinking Vis is done.  upperbody sounds to me like another head injury.  either way, you can't count on his presence, no matter how much he is making next yr.

The Islanders need to get a older veteran who is stronger with the defense than with the offense, like Vis.  If they don't get another veteran to sure up the blue line and help with the development of the younger d-men they will be making a mistake.

willymayshays
willymayshays

@Jeff Roland @truth77

3-4? Hamonic, de Haan and Hickey are a good start...

Reinhart will at the least be a very good defensive d-man, I would bet on it.

Not sure about any of the other prospects, BUT there are around 8 very talented young blue liners that will compete for those last 2 spots over the next couple of yrs.  Doubting that prospects pan out is one thing, saying all 8 will flop is simply pessimistic and most likely wrong.

REDSpointofview

@slapshot18_rs @REDSpointofview

I didn't say the exposure to bigger, faster players was a bad thing...  I said that those who are currently teaching in this organization have come up lacking,,, and I include Snow amongst that group...

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@shlo @REDSpointofview

The Kane/Byfuglien rumor is just that,,, a rumor.  I have read that Kane is unhappy in the hinterlands of Canada and would be happy near the bright lights of the big city, but that's just speculation, too.  Perhaps Winnipeg wants to send both players out together in a package.  I did read a report from one Winnipeg blogger that says just what you intimate, Byfuglien on the down side.

As far as a goal tender,,, that is the crux of the problem right now, or rather the lack thereof which has created the problem.  Nabokov is done, Poulin and Nilsson may never be and Koskinen has another year in the KHL.  Snow needs to attract a true number one, some how, some way.  Perhaps he could then sign Nabokov as a back up for about a twenty game run next year.  Until he gets a solution in goal, there is nothing left to talk about as far as next year is concerned.  Without a solid net minder it will just be another lost season...

John Falcone

@Andrey Miterin  I watch every game and Bailey can play, he is a guy that has to find it, and he can do that playing with JT.  Even when he has had a goal scoring drought, he still makes some good plays.  Besides, he has experience, and we are not going to sign a top 6 UFA.

Please research Griffin Reinhart and then research the coaching history of Peter laviolette and then take a look at the ranking of our goal tending this year . Thank you

@REDSpointofview Must admit that I don't know much about Khudobin, heard the name of course, saw couple of games but that's it.

I guess he is an improvement over anything we have.

I don't think we have to sell Brooklyn to him.

Plenty of Borscht and other goodies..no language barrier , he'll do fine.

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@shlo

I might add a possible solution to the goal tending situation,,, at least a solution if Snow has the where withal to pull it off and Carolina is willing to listen...  The Hurricanes will have almost $10 million invested in goalies next season between Ward and Khudobin.  Khudobin's contract gets a triple bump next year.  Nabokov recently had dinner with Khudobin.  Perhaps there was some selling going on over the Borscht.  Perhaps something could be worked out there.  It means a trade and means Snow on the dealing end but,,, perhaps that's a viable solution...

@Harry (PJP) @Chris @mrcisback  do you guys really hate snow that much that you're going to say that milbury is a better gm? i mean lets be realistic, milbury is the worst thing that has ever happened to this franchise.  putting snow in that  category is just wrong.  snows worst trade isnt as bad as milburys 5th worst.

doc942

@Harry (PJP) @Chris @mrcisback  Stop making me laugh.  I know I get branded a Snow apologist, (I'm not) but if you think Milbury won his fair share of trades that's the ultimate revisionist history. That fool destroyed this franchise for 25 years.

@njersey please realize that even Al Arbour, when not given a competitive team, didn't make a difference. The right coach with a good team makes a team better. Defenseman take time to develop. We need at least 1 top pair defenseman and that's a lot to ask of any rookie. A legit #1 goalie is the #1 need, but I don't think those 3 things alone make us a playoff team. A top 3 forward plus what you said may just have us squeaking in.

@3mta3 @njersey

He (Laviolette) last coached the Islanders (11) years ago,  (taking the Islanders to (2) Playoff appearances - by the way). He then went on to win (2) Stanley Cups with (2) different clubs..... Snow - may not hire him, but I will repeat myself - add Reinhart, an NHL Goalie and Laviolette to this club and the Isles are a Playoff team next season. Guaranteed.... I'm just telling you how simple it would be.... IF SNOW CAN'T do that, well then we probably suck again....

3mta3
3mta3

@njersey  Here is some research on Peter Laviolette.  He once was the Islanders coach until a group of players forced him out.  Snow was one of those players.  He is not coming here with Snow as GM.

I do like Randy Carlyle and would like the NYI to hire him after he is fired by Toronto in the off season.

booby prob thinks everything needs to go.

Aside from Snow/Wang/Capuano:

1-goalie

2-RW (a good one) for 2nd line

3-Older, veteran defensive wizard type d-man to help teach the youngins how it's done
