Report: Anders Nilsson Not Willing to Play Another Year in AHL

Kevin Schultz

The Islanders goaltending situation is the most pressing concern for the team this summer and, at the moment, the team does not have a goaltender with an NHL game to his name signed to a contract for next season (although they do have a pair of RFAs).

NHL vet Evgeni Nabokov, who turns 39 in July, is unsigned and staring at unrestricted free agency on July 1. Both young goalies with NHL experience, Kevin Poulin and Anders Nilsson, will be restricted free agents this summer and will need new contracts. They will remain NYI property as long as the Islanders make qualifying offers to retain their rights. At the present moment no one is signed but of course there’s still much time.

In addition to all that, these three netminders were servicable, and that’s being generous, as they combined for the NHL’s worst team save percentage in the 2013-14 season, with a .894 mark. The NHL average save percenatage last year was .914.

The situation is now a bit more complicated, as Anders Nilsson has revealed to his home country’s media outlet Expressen.se that he is unwilling to play another year in the AHL with the Sound Tigers. Nilsson has spent the majority of the past three years in the AHL, with some time spent in the NHL as well.

The translated version of the article is clear on Nilsson’s thoughts:

“I have done for three years in the AHL and I do not think it would be good for my development to play a fourth year in the AHL. That’s what I’ve said to them, since we have not started to go into contract negotiations.”

“My hope and my goal is to play in the NHL, but I do not want to play in the AHL. So it will not be the NHL so it will be well anywhere in Europe.”

So there it is, Europe or the NHL for Anders Nilsson next year. You almost have to wonder if Snow knew this, or at least had a feeling. As of February 28 of this year, Nilsson only had 10 NHL games on his resume. After that point, he played in 13 of the Islanders final 22 games. Nilsson finished the 2013-14 campaign with an .896 save percentage.

Haven't we drafted enough guys name Nilsson at this point??

Good for him. 3 years is enough time for anyone in the AHL. But he was already playing for an AHL team in the Isles.

I like Garth Snow and want him to succeed, but last year is on him and his record shows that he has not been a successful GM. Snow is a good guy. Last summer I talked with him congratulating him on making the play-offs. I also said to improve the Isles needed a goalie and at least one big top 4 d-man. Garth replied "You don't like our defense, I do." and "We' wil straighten out the goaltending." He did neither.

Asking those questions didn't make me a brain surgeon. After watching this game for more years than I like to remember I do have a clue about what I'm watching.(Have I been wrong of course, I was never a big Kenny Johnson fan. I thought he was too soft. Then one day Butch Goring told me that Johnson would have been a top 4 d-man on the great team.) However, regarding the Snow conversation, by the time we talked, I knew that 40 of 42 hockey media guys in Canada picked the Isles to miss the play-offs. Virtually all said it was because the D was too small & not very good and that the goaltending was weak." I was surprised by what Snow said, but figured he'd make a couple of deals to fix things before the season started. It never happened.

So, like Wang, the franchise, Cappy, etc..Garth Snow is what his record says he is.

Koskinen was dynamite this year in the KHL. Snow approved his playing the KHL. If he allowed him to sign a long term deal, it is another blunder. Sadly, a guy I know is pretty close to Snow in that they socialize a bit. When I asked about Koskinen a few weeks ago, he said "He won't be here." Who knows this is the first time I asked the guy anything about Snow's thinking.

Now that Nilsson has spoken out he has written his ticket off the Island. Charles does not like dissent. You can be bad at your job, just don't speak badly about the organization or complain in any way.

I think it should be noted that Mr. Snow drafted two goalies in 2009. Nilsson in the third round and Koskinen in the second. It now looks like Nilsson will be gone, probably without much return, and I don't ever hear Koskinen's name in any conversation.

Two fairly high picks wasted. No need to wonder why this team hasn't gotten past the first round in 20 years.

Nino was a malcontent. If so, why have Minny fans loved him since the day he got there. Nino was made to play with Reasoner and Pandolfo for a whole season while lesser players got more ice time. He was than virtually ignored the following season. Do you think his agent didn't know what playing for Wang & this management is like?

Nilsson (who I don't care about) is just following Nino's lead. Piss Wang off and your can get off Devil's Island. Also, GMs don't trade away unproven top 5 picks , even if they are malcontents, for a solid 3rd line player.

If Nino was a malcontent, so were Trevor Linden and the "beloved Kirk Muller". Linden was a leader and one of the most respected players in the NHL...he didn't want to be here. Muller who infuriated all of us because he was the first to outspokenly say "I don't want to play for the Islanders". But, everywhere else he was a leader and a respected player. Like them or not they the storm warnings of what was to come. Drury took less money to play for the Rangers (how he worked out is not the point). Then there are the phony offers made by Wang knowing players would not take them. Ehrhoff is a good example. Wang offered more BUT backloaded the deal knowing that every FA at that time was getting front loaded deals. If what I have not written is not so, prove it. Name one top UFA who has come here or stayed.....you can't. There is one Alexei Yashin who was vastly overpaid mainly because like DP, Yashin became a personal friend of Wang. Name another?

Hold out on Wang & you get banned for a year. None of the other owners do that. So, Wang who has never won a play-off round is right in making that policy and the other 29 (including those who make the play-offs most years) are idiots. Wang knows more than Lou Lamoriello and others? "No one will come here because of the arena." whines Isles management. The Penguins had no problem signing FAs when they played in the Igloo a worse building than the Coliseum.

Bottom line is that we are all in this together. The disagreements among us are just typical of what all fans do. We all want to win. Unfortunately, we're saddled with an owner who doesn't care about winning.

Good God. I can't believe we actually still have fans defending Wang...saying it has "very little to do with him". Others equating the words diehard & fan with the 329 bunch of lackeys. Die hards & fans do not blindly support their team NO MATTER WHAT! Fans who support their team by NEVER CRITICIZING anything are either idiots or bought and paid for. The 329 bunch are a combination of both. Doug Tyborski is one who responded like that. He may be a good guy, but if he thinks never criticizing a team is what makes a real fan, he is in LA-LA land.

Twenty two years....I've been there since 1972. So what? I never boo a player except for lack of effort like what Brian Rolston gave us. On the other hand I NEVER CHANT WE LOVE A GM who has never won anything. The 329 bunch did just that and were preparing to chant WE LOVE CHARLES but the season thankfully ended. I pay for my tickets like most fans and don't get reduced prices for agreeing to never criticizing the team, its management or owner.

By the way, I love that the Ranger fans are using the YES YES YES chant. So 329's search for uniqueness continues. Only one more year before the 329 bunch can no longer afford to come to games. I hate seeing fans priced out of sporting events. It's the worst thing going on in sports at this time, but seeing the lackeys in 329 go is a boon to fans who refuse to sell out to an owner like Charles Wang.

How embarrassing is this, this was tweeted by the bklyn nets website to their "wild and crazy" bklyn fans about the fans in Toronto:

"#Nets fans take note- this is what a playoff crowd sounds like..set your DVD and take notes"

Isles didn't need to tweet something like this during last seasons playoffs that's for sure. Funny we've been told by some on here that that building is loud I guess the nets organization themselves would disagree with that.

I think it's best that Garth not make anymore trades at this point.  We need a goalie very badly but I'm hoping he stick to his (and Wang's) strategy of picking up low cost "B" players. I'm willing to put up with another year of "bottom 5" hockey rather than have Garth make a trade that will set us back even further.

Once Wang sells the new owner will hopefully be a smart  hockey guy and will hire a real GM who can rebuild this team the right way. Until then, for me, no trades are good trades.

When you can't draft, can't cultivate, and pretty much suck at everything, the team's going to suck. It's just the way it goes.

So long, Anders. You don't deserve to be in the NHL yet with your stats.

@mrcisback This kid has not even gotten prime time power play minutes yet.Wait till next year! he is 22 and we gave up on  a 6-2 220 pound Power forward that can skate shoot and score.Because his agent asked for a trade after the kid got garbage minutes.then goes down to ahl scores almost 30 goals and does not get a chance to make the Team, when Bailey gets second line minutes .You cant make this stuff up. Trade a 5 pick that is 21 for a journeymen hockey player!Hey Trivia Question what  1st round  Islander pick has won a Game 7 in overtime A.J.t B.Bailey C. Okposo D. Nino. L o L.You are right about Vanek Trade another Brilliant move.

Don't forget the defenseman who the Islanders couldn't sign who tied the game, Spurgeon. Minny owes the Isles a thanks after tonight's win. Love you Garth!

How funny that this Nilsson story comes out on the day that nino has 2g 1 a including the ot game winner in game 7. This just adds to this terrible trade. They didn't develop him right and then they trade him for clutterbuck (no slam on him) who they fail to play in a way to at least capitalize on his talents.

The Penguins better play some defense in the Ranger series or its going to be a short series. The old playoff system the Rangers would be playing Boston and Pittsburg would be playing Montreal.

Who will the Flyers buyout first, Lecalvier or MacDonald? Flyers spend like drunken sailors but at least make the playoffs! With a real GM and coach the Islanders would be a team on the rise! But under the trio of Wang, Snow and Capuano this team will be lucky too play 500 hockey with another year out of the playoffs! Rags can beat the Penquins but their run will end there!

I'm laughing at the $5M Amac giveaways. The Flyers are certainly getting their money's worth.

@cyber16382  koskinen signed a deal with the KHL because there wasnt room for him here, thats why you dont hear about him....we still own his nhl rights and when his contract is up next year, you will hear more of his name.

@rmreturns Spurgeon has been a regular in the NHL for 3/4 years He has consistently been better than some of the dregs that have moved through the Isles over that time.

He should be compared to Ness who Snow kept over Spurgeon and is now heading to Europe. The Spurgeon thing didn't bother me because I'm not big on small players. Raving about him might seem like piling on, but when you look at the overall picture and history of the team in the last 20 years, Spurgeon is just another symbol of what is wrong. One game doesn't make Nino, but there is more reason to think long term he will be a better player than Clutterbuck (who I really like as a player). Your point on Moulson is well taken.

However, I'm sure you noticed that in this play-off round., the following players played in it Spurgeon, Moulson, Parenteau, Niedereiter, Parise (who though passed by other GMs was there for the great Wang favorite Milbury to take). Just seeing these guys and knowing that the Isles have nothing to show for them except Clutter buck & Colberg & a pick....just is seen by an irate fan base as more evidence of how bad this franchise is.

Just looking at the Wang years. No play-off series wins. More non-play-off years than play-off years. Both bring you to Bill Parcells thinking "You are what your record says you are." There is absolutely no reason for Islander fans to be happy with or non-critical of the entire Islander franchise.

@camb33 But he has done wonders for hockey in Minnesota and Montreal.

slapshot18_rs

@cyber16382  if that was the case, then they should be giving up this years 5th overall pick.  since they expected to keep it, it would make no sense to make "no trades."  this team needs a few pieces now.

Wang is really trying to surpass milbury as the biggest joke of a gm ever.

slapshot18_rs

@truth77 @mrcisback  we know the move was bad.  its not any worse just because nino scored an OT winner in the playoffs...its equally as bad before and after.

@truth77  it is not going down as the worst trade in isles history.  not even close.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@truth77  not for nothing but nino had 3 of his 4 points last night.  not like he dominated this year or in the playoffs.  are we going to mock snow every time nino scores? seems to be the norm

mrcisback
mrcisback

@truth77   Lets just hope now that Snow doesn't trade any of Strome,Nelson,Lee or Reinhart in an attempt to make the team better. Actually the trade of Moulson a 1st round pick and 2nd round pick for Vanek is much worse then the Nino trade.

@slapshot18_rs @cyber16382I agree the team does need to make trades but do you really want Snow making them? It's like the Milbury error all over again. Every trade he made, made the team.worse not better and set them back years.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@cyber16382 @slapshot18_rs  well no of course i dont want snow making them.  unfortunately hes the only one that can and the needs are extremely obvious.

they desperately need a goalie and i think that if he is able to get ANYONE to come here, it would be an upgrade from what we had in the pipes this season.

but i obviously have my doubts as well.

@orange2327  giroux played pretty well through most of the series, he just didnt score besides the empty netter, but he was very visible out there creating opportunities.
