Ryan Strome Discusses His Debut

At the NY Hockey Journal, Christian caught up with Strome about his thoughts on his first NHL game Saturday night.

“I was more comfortable than I thought,” Strome said after the game. “These guys make the game easy. They talk a lot. Obviously I’m coming in here blindfolded a little bit. Not too sure what to expect, but my linemates helped me out a lot. The game is a bit easier down here, in the sense that everyone is in the rights spot. It’s not as chippy. It’s obviously faster, but for my skill set it fits nicely.”

I liked what I saw of Strome and I am excited to see him at center.  I would swap him and Frans and let him play with Bailey and Grabs.  Or a big shake up:

Bailey - JT - KO

Vanek - Strome - Nelson

Grabs - Nielsen - Cal

Martin - CZ - McD (or Boulton etc)

Thought Capuano did a great job with the last change with Strome at home. Glad to see him use him with JT four on four. Besides that I am hearing Strome will play center so you won't see him with JT. . Im glad to hear a kid that has confidence. I agree let all the kids come up and play. They will learn much more here than Bridgeport. I watched them play a week ago even when Ryan was there and I'll tell you there are only a few prospects. I warn fans right now don't drink the kool aid that our prospects are as good as other organizations. Not true.

The Islanders will have two superstars with John Tavares and Ryan Strome to build there team around.  These top players should help take the pressure off each other. I see Tavares as a top 5 player in the league which he is now and Strome a top 10 player in the league within 2 years. Tavares stated in a recent interview that he see's Strome as one of the top players in the league within a couple of years. Hopefully we can pick in the top 2 of the 2014 NHL Draft. Ekbland would be a very nice addition with Griffen Reinhart and Ryan Pulock to build our defense around. Hopefully we get a nice package back for Thomas Vanek when that trade comes.

I thought Strome looked great. You can tell he has special vision, made some very nice passes, and is a very good skater. He also seems to be confident and hardworking.

I'm excited and hopeful for this young player; talented, intelligent and articulate - excellent combination. 20 years old and playing in the NHL. That must be something. I'll be there tomorrow night and I hope to see some electricity from him. The Isles could use a spark, lord only knows.

"It's not as chippy.  It's obviously faster."  In other words, fewer goons, more skilled players.  At this point in a season that appears on the edge, bring up Lee, too.  Put Strome with Nelson and Lee and let's see what the future looks like...

Seems like he's bringing some much needed confidence to a team that has (for the most part) lost its own.

Like the lines. Just think vanek is gonna need top line minutes if he is gonna sign here. Cant have a 7-8million $ man anywhere but 1st line...unless your the penguins

@billywell you prob didnt see any good prospects at that Bridgeport game because not many of our top prospects play in Bridgeport.  Here is LOOSELY based PERSONAL ranking of our propects and where they have played so far (not including goalies)

1.Strome (AHL/NHL)

2.Reinhart (OHL)

3.Pulock (OHL)

4.Nelslon (NHL)

5.Pokka (SM-Liiga)

7. de Haan (AHL/NHL)

8. Donovan (AHL/NHL)

9. Petrov (KHL)

10. Lee (AHL)

11. Pelach (OHL)

12. Pedan (AHL)

13. Mayfield (AHL)

That is absolutely a top 5 farm system and of those 13 only strome and lee have played more than 20 games at Bridgeport because of call ups or injury.  In the time frame you were there you would have only seen Strome Lee and Donovan of that group and they have all played really well at that level.

@dkdk

Could he possibly outshine JT in a couple of years?

@red2 although that is all kids on a line, I like this idea….I think they'd be better than most think.

@Don22   You should worry about your posts and not play IPB police.

@Mark Kaiser @red2 That line played together in Bridgeport and worked great. Lee has not played great last few games, reason, Strome got called up. Put them together and I think they would make a decent line.

@Bryan AmmiratiI get what you are saying Bryan - but this IS something positive to talk about.  And that clown has to write that garbage.  It's pure troll and I fell for it.

@Don22 @gordlane I never post and i hate the negative posts as well but i don't blame the fans, if the team gave us something positive to talk about I am sure we would.  Hasn't been to many things good to talk about since what 1993.

@gordlane@Don22You are right about the awful format.  And it seems like you have been part of this blog for a while so you have seen that it has been rife with negativity this year.  So when I finally see a nice article and even nice comments (by some of the complainers), it bugs me when someone has to make such a negative comment.  And one that really has no relevance.

gordlane

@Don22----I do worry about my opinions in this watered down IPB, and do not post, especially under this awful format.

I will agree with you on your "glimmer of hope", but we all have a right to post our 0.02. If Chris feels that way, so be it.

Opinions here are not going to change the development of Strome. Look upstairs to Snow and Co. for that.

Don22
Don22

@gordlaneAnd then maybe you should worry about  your own posts too.  This is a good article about Strome and his eagerness to show what he can do.  A small glimmer of something to get excited about in this dismal season.  And then Chris R decides he needs to write that he is being set up to fail.  Useless post.

Hopefully they do the right thing with him, whatever that entails, and not hinder his further development, he seems to be  future 'diamond' and he provides the scoring punch along with JT, providing he remains here along with Vanek, and ditto re: him also staying, then in the next year or 2 they have brought up some of the  D that is so desperately needed on this team, only then perhaps they will start to resemble a viable hockey team, and not the debacle that passes for islanders hockey at the present.

Oh and as far as your first point about failed rebuild .... Snow called this a 5 year old rebuild which is now in year 6 in your math, 7 to most others. So either way as we sit in 29th place it is failed based on snows own timeline. His words to grade against. And since dmen take longer to develop than other positions and that being out glaring need we are still several years off from being a legit contender. And that is if all of these stud dmen being stud dmen. And so far the track record doesn't indicate that hey will all be hits.

Ah spoken like a true absolutist. Do you go to a restaurant and like every single on the menu? Do you like a car but it is $10k more than you feel it is worth and no longer think it is worth it?

I know this is tough to comprehend but while I think the rebuild has netted far less fruit than a legit GM would have gotten picking as high as we have for as long as we have but there are actually guys I like, most notably Strome who I have been in love with since he was taken. Nelson has looked good although some people are a little crazed when speaking of him.

Bottom line is hopefully Strome, Nelson, and Lee are more JT and less Bailey and Kabanov. If so maybe the rebuild will "only" be 10-12 years (if the D are legit). If they are not it may be even longer. Long story short at this point even BEST CASE this is far longer than 5 years. And we aren't even close to the point where we know if anyone beyond JT will be an impact guy.

@mario .... I thought was the line that was frequently together. Did you see them live? Should be a nice blend of size and skill.
