Strome Set to Make NHL Debut Tonight

Christian Arnold, Islanders Point Blank:

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Ryan Strome played it cool during his time with the media after the Islanders’ morning skate, but it was easy to tell the 20-year-old was excited to be finally making his NHL debut.

“It’s exciting,” Strome said about being called up. “I feel like the carrots been dangling in front of me for a little bit now, especially this last week. I’m eager to get out here and get the puck dropped.”

Stome was officially called up from AHL Bridgeport on Wednesday, but the Islanders coaching staff kept him out of Thursday’s game against Phoenix in order to give him more time to prepare for the NHL. That sets the stage for Strome to make his debut at home against the Montreal Canadiens tonight.

Following the morning skate Islander Head Coach Jack Capuano was not sure what the lines for the game would be. Strome skated with Cal Clutterbuck and Bridgeport Sound Tigers’ teammate Brock Nelson. The pairing would make sense since Nelson and Strome played with one another in Bridgeport and would already have some chemistry together.

Regardless of who he ends up playing with, Strome will be a welcomed addition to the offensively challenged Islanders. Outside of the goal by Eric Boulton against Phoenix and Andrew MacDonald’s in the game against St. Louis,  the Isles have not generated secondary scoring in recent games. Adding the former first round pick to the lineup can only increase the chances of secondary scoring kicking in.

“I think just offensive push,” Strome said in response to a question of what he brings to the team. He was the AHL’s leading scorer at the time he was called up won back to back player of the week honors for his play.

“I’m a guy who’s learned how to play pretty responsible in the American League and hopefully I can just adapt those things,” Strome added. “Obviously it’s a transition, but my job is to eliminate that learning curve as much as possible and make the adjustment easier.”

Capuano isn’t expecting to Strome’s first game to be mistake free. In fact the Islander head coach expects him to make a mistake or two.

“He’s going to make some mistakes, but it’s the shift after,” Capuano said. “Just go out and don’t change too much about his game… He’s got some great offensive instincts. He’ll see some power play time for us tonight and he’s going to get his opportunities.”

The Mississauga  native will have his mom, dad and brother on hand to watch him make his NHL debut. And to make it even more special, the game is on Hockey Night in Canada. “I grew up watching Hockey Night in Canada, so it’s kind of ironic,” Strome said.

David Desharnais, the guy who set up the winner, is listed at 5'7".  Yeah, he's 5'7", with his skates on.  I think I'm going to barf.

Good game. Nabby played very well. Strome looked quick, good moves in the zone. Got knocked over twice?, but he looked good. Price made some nice stops..

Defense played well, good game. Ness continues to get caught guarding an area, but not doing enough when a forward enters his area. Riberio came down and beat him vs the 'Yotes. Tonight the Habs forward just came in, and made a play on the puck. Gotta be better Ness..

Defense played so much better tonight then the last game. The Isles didn't install a new system. That's not poor coaching, that's just defenders playing better.

I have never seen a home arena with so many visiting fans in prime seats like that. That is just one of the many embarrassments.

After 41 years I am changing my classification from Islander fan to observer. Maybe I wont get as disgusted because this is about as bad as it gets.

Nabakov was great. Unfortunately he has only three NHL caliber defensemen on his team. Ness looked like he was waiting for a bus on the winning goal.  On a team with bigger and more skilled D-men Hickey might work out. On this team Hickey's size make him a liability. Strome definitely has potential. As I said earlier today Vanek is beginning to look alot like Oleg Kvasha. After watching him for two months I don't see an elite forward. Maybe it's because he really does'nt want too play for this team! Except for the top line and Strome we have a group of fourth line forwards! Watched Capuano after the game he was happy to get a point. I think he's happy he still has a job! Of course the main culprit in this whole mess is the clueless GM our former back-up goalie. At this point it's become a broken record but until changes are made in ownership  this team will be one of the doormats of the NHL!

Welcome to the Islanders, Mr. Strome. There will be a lot more nights like this.

Grabner no points in 24 games. How is that possible?

Another wasted night in front of the TV.  Tired of watching the same idiots on Ice making the same mistakes, over and over again!  Hickey and Ness on ice against Pacioretty and Desharnais!  I guess this was the "shutdown" pair number two on the ice?  It's laughable!!  Since Snow made that trade for Vanek (by the way, Moulson scored tonight on another crap team) to ostensibly "shake" the team up, they have looked horrible!

This team will get nowhere fast as long as Wang and Snow are running the show!  Tavares looked really pissed tonight when they left the ice.  I think he is fed up with seeing the same results over and over again.  How long before Tavares is looking to bow out of this mess?  Even his play has looked off this past month.  Vanek  doesn't look that great.  Tired of seeing Josh Bailey and Michael Grabner looking so inept on the ice.  They would be in the minors on some other successful team.  Just a total mess.  I'm tired of watching them and wasting my time.

I guess we should get ready for another 10 games losing streak. This team is simply no good. They are horrible from the owner right down to the players maybe with the exception of JT, but he is as good as gone as well. With his talent he is going to want to be traded to a contender. The Islanders the laughing stock of the NHL all because Wang never got the support for his Lighthouse Project, and this is how he's paying the fans and long Island back.

You just knew once it got to OT the game was going to be over, won of course by the Habs, whether pro Wang, or anti Wang, we have all seen this crappy movie many times before, and will continue to see it during this faux 'rebuild'.

At least this team plays better with Nabby in goal and is somewhat competitive.

Don Cherry is all over Tavares for coming around the net with his head down.  Called him stupid, said he was asking for it.  And you know what, he's right.

Bailey, Grabner, Regin are all saving their strength, and goal scoring for the playoffs, they don't want to be embarrassed by not scoring in the POs.

@TomDinNJWhy not just change your classification to Rangers fan.  Either root for the team or don't.

@TonyMIf it weren't for Nabby, the score could have been easily 3 - 0.

@Michael NaginThis team is not much different than the one that was in place when he signed the contact.  If he is pissed, he can't be pissed at management.

But seriously - he's pissed at how the team is playing.  Stop trying to read into things that aren't there.

@Michael Nagin

I'm beginning to believe Tavares is either an idiot, for extending his contract, or got very bad advice from whoever, or perhaps Wang, and Snow promised him something and filled his eyes with sparkles, of which neither of those 2 half wits went out and acquired what they may have promised him.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@victor pereira @Macacawitz The best way to "respond" to a hit is by initiating hits in the first place.  You take the game to the opposition in your own building.  You make them skate with their heads up.  As the late Harold Ballard of the Toronto Maple Leafs might have put it, the average Islander defenseman could go into the corner with a dozen eggs in his pocket and skate out without one broken.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@orange2327 Exactly, if that's your D-Man and he doesn't make that play, you bench him.

@dkdk It's to promote tourism in Uniondale.  It's a very welcoming city and they are looking to make it a destination.

Yes, but Philly is 2 hours away, that would happen from time to time in the glory days. Now it happens regardless of opponents. Montreal is every game deal, Pittsburgh happens once in awhile, sometimes Washington. These aren't quick little jaunts.

@orange2327 Oh sure cause those 2 points tonight would have put us back into the playoff race. Are you kidding me man? Have some self respect, defend your captain, first step towards team building
