Michael Grabner Scores Hat Trick in Olympic Opener (Video)

This morning in Sochi, Team Austria kicked off their Olympic play against Finland. The Isles Michael Grabner scored the game’s first goal only :36 into the match to put Austria up 1-0. The lead wouldn’t last long though, as Finland’s Mikael Granlund answered Grabner’s goal five minutes later and the Finns would lead 4-2 at the end of the first period.

In the third, Grabner scored twice more to get the hatter including this, his third goal, with a little more than five minutes to go:

By the way, all three of his goals game against Boston netminder Tukka Rask, who is between the pipes for Finland.

Austria would go on to lose the game 8-4. They have an uphill battle in the Olympics, as Grabner, Thomas Vanek and Philly’s Michael Raffl are the only NHLers on their roster. Their next game is tomorrow at Noon against Canada.

In other action today Team USA blew out Slovakia 7-1, and Russia beat Slovenia 5-2. The final game of the day is Canada against Norway, which starts at noon.

I hope wang and snow enjoyed the valentines gifts they got each other.

I know that there's a current NHL roster freeze, but i hope our inept GM is still working the phones anyways

The fact that we get mad Grabs scored a hat trick

Not that i believe any thing that Hockey the buzz says but they believe that Anaheim is the leading team in on Vanek. For what its worth i'd love to get goaltender Frederick Anderson back from Anaheim even if the Islanders had to expand the trade. If it was Anaheim then i'd also have serious interest in Emerson Etem picked right before Brock Nelson in the draft and Hampus Lindholm.

I hope Grabner has a hell of tourney,  then trade him . Guy's a NHL bust

Watched USA/SLOVAK. Jurcina is a pylon

I guess he got his quota for the season, and will not score another goal for the rest of this season with the Isles.

Naturally he did. NYI are cursed!

you all don't understand that the international skating rink is much wider and great skaters like grabner will fare very well with those rinks. also the competion and goaltending is much weaker than the nhl. plus grabner has to have some capable teammates that can get him the puck and be a threat to score also so the opposition cannot key on him all the time

Include him in a trade with vanic. Graber speed would work well in Dallas. Trade for Valeri Nichushkin.

Nice job Grabs, look forward to seeing you miss the net with every shot when you get back to NY. Next time you have a breakaway just dump it in will ya.

Really? Can't do that for the Islanders?

I've been to the world championships on multiple occasions.   Some of these guys play at a completely different level when playing for their countries.  Makes scouting extremely difficult.  You sign a guy you think is Crosby and he turns out to be Grabner.  Happens all the time.

On TSN Radio this morning they congratulated Grabner for being nice enough to show up.  He doesn't have the best reputation.

Time for the NHL to install "International" nets...then maybe this bozo could find the back of them for us!!!!!!!!!

@mitchfritz I laugh when people say coaching doesn't mean anything. Look at this Swiss team how well coached they are. Not much talent but they all follow the program. Look at the results, very impressive so far. Gonna be a tough team

@mitchfritz We got lucky on that no goal if that had happened to us I'd be furious, it looked like Quick was the one who knocked the net off which made it even worse for the Russians.

@mitchfritz He had a good game. Either pride or playing for the next contract, I'll take it.

I had no idea that TJ was that strong in the shoot out. Great job boys!

@Vicp73- Hi Vic! He sure does. And he looks like he's added some size. Skating well and good puck handling...

@Vicp73- I hope up-Chuck has him on a good pre-paid plan!!! LOL

@theguru Tukka Rask a weak goalie? national teams full of first rate NHL players weak competition?  I'll give you the bigger rinks as an advantage for Grabner.

@theguru  Would love to see the NHL switch to the larger olympic ice and ditch the trapezoid.  The game would improve immensely.

@Brandon Hillman  Nichushkin is a fabulous 2way player who is only 18.  He will be a superstar very soon.  I would take him for Vanek in a heartbeat.  Nill will NEVER trade him.

@Brandon Hillman Can we please keep the good ones we have cultivated??? We need Quality players, not a kazillion so-so players. Quality>Quantity, IMO!

@Zach14 Isles have piss poor coaching. It is amazing how these guys come alive under different instruction and guidance!

@Macacawitz  but if you think you're signing another crosby you pbl deserve a rude awakening.

@Macacawitz What really? I always had the impression grabs works pretty hard just doesn't have a great shot

We can't keep the puck out of a regular sized net.

Well we have a nicely paid 3rd liner for him so ......

And he is playing in all situations. Big strong and reliable. Not bad for a 20 year old.

@shlo @mitchfritz Callahan plays like that all the time, that's why he is injury prone, he's not that big. He set the tone in the first period when he put OV on his ass.

@kgkg @theguru  The Barclays Center can barely even fit a small NHL ice surface without obstructing the view of 40 percent of the seats so no chance of a larger ice surface in NHL especially with the loss of seats and revenue.

@kgkg @Brandon Hillman  How about the work  Jim Nill has done  in Dallas in such a short period. Learned from the best Kenny Holland Jimmy Devellano

Yea I'm sure they told him how to shoot the puck differently in three days. Isles staff is lacking a lot but lets not make a big deal out of grabs hat trick in a game that ultimately doesnt matter. Its more a kin to a bailey flash of brilliance than anything

Did they ever say who the replay officials were.

If I were a goalie I wouldn't say anything if my net was off, why would you if the puck goes in and it won't count

@orange2327

He should belong to that group in the book, 'The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight.'

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@orange2327  Despite the expectations, the pressure is enormous.  These guys will play harder for their country than they will for their NHL teams.  With that hat trick, he'll go back to his country this summer and be treated like a national hero.  Meanwhile, he could score a hat trick and walk through the Roosevelt Field mall and no one would notice him.
