Video: NHL SVP of Hockey Ops Kris King on Vanek’s “Goal”

During the first intermission of tonight’s game against Boston, Howie Rose interviewed the NHL’s Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Kris King, who works in the “war room” in Toronto, about Thomas Vanek’s non-game-winning goal from Saturday night.

So if the rules are different then what does the book say? If you have some super secret video views that make it so clear then where is it?

I agree - no other league claims you need an expert to interpret the rules. Thats a complete cover up. the rules are and should be obvious to all with a slo mo review. Complete garbage response.

The NHL is the most mis-managed league in sports. They claim to need experts to interpret rules and review plays, and use high school educated goons as experts.

Howie Rose let him off the hook way too easy. The video clearly shows the St. Louis players leg pushing Vaneks leg and skate into the puck.

Didn't watch this video/interview but I can say that Toronto made a good call on this play.  It was pretty obvious that he kicked it in.  Isles fans are only in denial of it because it was in overtime and they desperately need all the points they can get.  You don't have to wind up like you're playing kick ball in order for it to be a distinct kicking motion...stop trying to argue with Toronto's decision because you all just sound ridiculous.

I haven't heard ONE intelligent, logical argument for why this should have been counted as a goal.

You don't have to know hockey or even sports in general to know it was BS. I asked a coworker today what she thought a distinct kicking motion is. Her response, come here and I'll show you, yea a bit of a smartass but she proved my point pretty well.

"If a puck is guided in by an attackers skate it is a legitimate goal"i  Kris King told us that the rule changed and that allot of people donmt understand the rule and after saying that he didnt explain what the rule change was. What a crock!  Call Campbells office and let him know Isles fans are watching believe it or not. Here is his #:416-359-7900

Kris King's mere presence on Long Island the following game says everything about the call - that they can't rationalize make sense of it and need to BS their way through the outrage.  NHL should have sent a lawyer, because King isn't up to this filibuster task.  And how many more ex-Rangers can the NHL stuff into these positions?  If this was an original six team, there's no way the goal is waved off.

If that call was made against team Canada in the Olympics war would be declared! What a load of BS. If Vanek directed that puck in he should be on dancing with the stars!

Biggest load of bull crap ever. I never knew you could "disguise a move" and that the NHL was clever enough to see through it. Really? Is that a new class they give in the NHL? How to recognize when a move is disguised? and then the answer to a highly regarded referee's comment is to not only NOT answer his direct comment about any new or updated interpretations of the NHL's rule about what a "kicking motion"  is, He then disparages his reputation by insinuating that he (Kerry Fraser) doesn't understand the rules today"  and, he (Kerry Fraser) made a lot of bad calls too. If you are right then why attack someone's professional opinion? Why not simply stand on your own convictions. That says to me that they are wrong and know it. Oh and really, the war room has no "dogs in the race with a room full of former rags...Kris King ( a goon), Colin Campbell (#1 Islander hater) and Mike Murphy. I love it. The NHL's answer to a controversial calls is character assassination and ambiguity!

Wow, Kris King, a goon, critiques Kerry Fraser, "Kerry has made a lot of bad calls in his career"  Unreal, that's he's answer to the Fraser quote; character assassination.  It would seem that we have politicians in the "war room" up in Toronto.  Also, as a good politician, King assures the Islanders that calls will be going our way the rest of the season.  Nice -  unbiased and balanced, whatever

Kris King's interview had the feeling of a fifth grader changing the rules on a third grader mid-game out on the playground.

It was such a load of crap. Everyone who was in the situation room that ruled against the goal should lose their jobs.

Does anyone find it curious that Kris King was even at the game last night?  Does it seem logical that even after an interview request they would fly him down from Toronto to give an interview?  Why  not just do it over the phone and tape it for broadcast?  To me the proof that they knew it was a bs call was when Howie told him Kerry Fraser's comments and he still refused to explain what exactly a "distinct kicking motion" is.

Had this been Toronto or Montreal, you can bet that goal would have counted. This is a clear example of power run amok. The worst call on replay I've ever seen.

Howie should have the ex-Ranger$ thug when was the last time he went to the optometrist?

Vanek was right, it this was one of the big boys teams like the Leafs, Habs or Hockey's Evil Empire, the Ranger$$$, it would have ruled a goal!

Kris King=NY Ranger$=Screw NY Islanders!!!!

Isles get hosed again by the NHL!

Howie asked the right questions but was still WAY too soft on the guy.  He thanked him about 100 times, like it was a major inconvenience for this tool (right on Mroz!) to give up 5 minutes of his time.  Great phony attempt to be transparent, NHL!

potvinscup
potvinscup

EXACTLY! that's where Howie had him and didn't nail him on it......"dragging" is no where mentioned in the rule as being illegal......a distinct kicking motion is...howie

should have then said "so your saying he dragged the puck in to the net so where in the rule book is that illegal! Kris king messed up there big time by never saying Vanek kicked the puck in! Homie blew it!

The thing that is ticking me off more is when he said, "We have no dogs in the race here." Stuff like this is usually only said by people who are guilty.

The fact he was there tells you that the league knows they screwed up

Was hoping for a breakdown. Cant tell me with todays technology and the nhl's billions that they couldnt do a super slo mo with a madden style circle or arrow highlighting the actual kicking motion. They couldnt definitively point to anything. So he just offered verbal diarrhea. Howie asked good questions too. King simply danced around it by saying that"yes we did take that into consideration" but then failed to offer any indication of how it affected the decision. What a shame.

Such circular reasoning. The call was right because we are Toronto and we make the right calls.

Is that the same Kris King who was a goon on da Rainjizz? Howie was all over him and he was squirming. Especially when Howie said everything he wrote and heard said toranna got it wrong. You know the league screwed up and did a controversial thing when they send their spokesman to talk to the team’s broadcast on the very next game after they screwed up. When King said Vanek disguised the kick I cracked up.  What a joke. Colin Campbell, Mike Murphy and Kris King run the war room. All ex-Rainjizz.  No wonder NYI always get screwed on those reviews.

He sounds like a complete idiot! If I'm Islander management, I take this further. The bottom line is that they made this biased call because they thought no one in Islander land would care and toronto would benefit. We need to hold them accountable and tell them how wrong they are1 Who the hell even asked for the review? Cost us 2 points, and a whole lot of momentum. CRIMINAL!!!!

@westc2 Take a look at this call by Toronto and tell me how they can OVERTURN the call on the ice and call this a good goal (which it is) and disallow Vaneks goal.  According to the RULE Book they are both goals! Please tell me the reason why one is a goal and one is not.  In the King interview his reason was that we just don't understand the rule and that the war room is consistent in their understanding.  Compare the two and tell us how it is consistent! Here is the other goal.

Your drunk troll, its not just isles fans saying we got robbed. You want an intelligent argument. Do you know what a distinct kicking motion is? Care to explain were there is one.

Okay upon further review...steen doesn't even push vanek's skate!  It's all vanek...and he was looking at the puck too!  Wow some isles fans are really trying to spread lies.  I'd make a fancy video with arrows and circles showing him kick it in, but I really don't care to waste my time doing so for free.

Robert Cuillo

@TonyM even if he did direct the puck in its still a good goal as long as there is no distinct kicking motion.

@Carl O'Leary Howie dropped the ball on this because he didnt challenge him. He took the empty words or filibustering of Kris King and let him get away without saying anything of substance.  If I was Howie I would've said "as you said most people have no idea what the rule change was so what the hell is it then"?

@potvinscup Howie was so soft on this King, he should have really pressed him.  I never liked Howie since he let his partner in Jaffe get fired.

Total pu**y.

@Matt Rogers I felt the same way you do.  Just look at the guy and how he said it.  Of course he is lying.
